WIBU to tell friend her house smells of cat pee?

SodaStreamy · 09/05/2013 19:32

This has been playing on my mind. She's lovely, a friend but not a close friend iywim, our kids get together, we spend time having coffee and stuff at each others houses

There is a distinct 'cat pee' smell in her house, do I say anything?

I don't want to make things awkward or embaress her but it's there

Would you tell her if you were me?

I dont know. I have 2 cats and notice the smell very quickly and do try and keep on top of the cat smell. It's difficult without coming across like you're saying she's got a dirty house when she hasn't. hmmm....tough one.

thepurplepenguin · 09/05/2013 19:35

Er no, if she has cats she probably knows about it.

That's pretty much the last thing you should do.

hazeyjane · 09/05/2013 19:37

No, I expect she knows and has tried everything in her power to get the cat pee smell left by her incontinent old cat, out of carpet.

hazeyjane · 09/05/2013 19:38

BTW, can you just check my profile, just in case it is me you are talking aboutBlush

SodaStreamy · 09/05/2013 19:38

I have a cat too rainbows It's not a litter tray smell (well it might be?) more a cat's peed on the carpet smell

Does she use ammonia to do her cleaning or is it definitely cat pee?

Pascha · 09/05/2013 19:40

I would appreciate it. I can't smell my own sons pooey nappies so catpee wouldn't stand a chance.

harrietlichman · 09/05/2013 19:41

I would want you to tell me, personally. I am a cat lover, (my old cat died recently, and I do miss him) but I know that cats can smell a bit. It's a tricky one, but I know I would prefer to know.

SodaStreamy · 09/05/2013 19:46

I'm sure it's not you hazyjane however are you saying that if I can mell the cat pee she must too and probably doesn't want it mentioned?

Like I said I don't want to cause embaressment .....so you think she will be able to smell it and be aware that others can smell it too?

MeDented · 09/05/2013 19:46

Do you have a solution you can tell her at the same time? Might not sound as bad if you can give an idea of how to fix it?

pooka · 09/05/2013 19:54

Are you my friend?

My house (to me, though not dh, but I have v sensitive sense of smell) smells of cats.

I've sprayed, cleaned carpets. Hands and knees sniffing. But can't find evidence in house (though we do have cats). And then last month I noticed next door's Tom spraying on our front garden gravel. Andthen again, and again. The smell is wafting Through our windows and possibly the air vents in bay window. I've catapulted garden, used other stuff from garden centres. No difference. Bastard cat. Angry

pooka · 09/05/2013 19:55

What does get rid of the smell of cat pee?

sukysue · 09/05/2013 19:57

She probably knows already ! Bloody cats lol!

Binkyridesagain · 09/05/2013 19:59

Its not my house is it? Sorry if it is, I can't smell cat pee so I'm alright about people telling me if they can smell it.

You can buy Simple Solution for cat pee. I use the dog one and its really good.

EasyToEatTiger · 09/05/2013 20:01

We have dogs and frankly our new house smells of dog. We've just moved house and that house smells of dog. We use a steam cleaner and it does help. On the other hand, animals smell. We are animals and we smell too.

LouiseSmith · 09/05/2013 20:02

Its a difficult one, maybe try dropping that really good air freshener, or that you recently discovered 1001 and its amazing!!! I suspect she knows, I know from experience Cat pee is the hardest smell to get rid off.

hazeyjane · 09/05/2013 20:03

If anyone knows of a way of getting rid of cat pee, please I will pay you, probably in magic beans, because I am bankrupted after having tried every single product and 'alternative' solution under the sun.

Maybe I should just hand guests a pomander or a scented hankie to hold under their noses.

jellybelly18 · 09/05/2013 20:09

Hazey have you tried scrubbing biological washing powder?

Charlesroi · 09/05/2013 20:18

Hazey have you tried scrubbing biological washing powder?

Yep, that works. Or if you catch the sods in the act, mop up and spray the area with a vinegar solution.

hazeyjane · 09/05/2013 20:25

Yes to bio powder - house smelt of washing with a hint of cat wee,

Yes to vinegar - house smelt of vinegar and cat wee (this is really bad)

hazeyjane · 09/05/2013 20:27

I think i should have namechanged for these posts. It's like being at a '*** anonymous' meeting

'My name is Hazeyjane, and my house smells of cat pee.....'

Binkyridesagain · 09/05/2013 20:28

Hazey have you tried Simple Solutions stain and odour remover, they are animal specific so make sure you get the cat one, there is also Simple Solutions carpet shampoo.

SodaStreamy · 09/05/2013 20:31

hazy have you tried bicarb of soda, take a smal bit and add a bit of water to make it paste and rub it in the area.

Remove with a wet cloth the next day then sprinkle the are with dry bicarb of soda every day then vaccum. It does remove some of the smell

Mine must smell of pee sometimes I am sure.

When they have pooed in the litter tray the disgusting smell lingers and even with cleaning the solid pee out every time they go I often get a whiff of pee.

I hate it as I love my cats but also love a clean smelling house. I just open my windows often and keep the litter tray as spotless as I can.
