This has been playing on my mind. She's lovely, a friend but not a close friend iywim, our kids get together, we spend time having coffee and stuff at each others houses

There is a distinct 'cat pee' smell in her house, do I say anything?

I don't want to make things awkward or embaress her but it's there

Would you tell her if you were me?

My name is Herrena and my house smells of dog!

I would tell friend in an "oh I've only just noticed, I think your cat might have pissed" not in a "do you know your house always smells of piss" iyswim

Ime the only way to get rid of smell of cat pee is to
a) get rid of cat AND
b) get rid of carpets (soft furnishings, woodwork etc)

Hope that helps Smile

The only thing I found that worked was this

Do not bother with the red spray bottles you can buy in shops, it has to be the blue bottles, and this stuff unbefuckinglievable. I buy it in bulk to make it worth the postage, but it really really really works. Even on cat diarrhoea. I tried everything until I found it, my house reeked of cat pee and poo (incontinent rescue mog) and I had lost the ability to smell it properly. This did the trick.

Oh, and if you have underlay, sadly you will have to cut it out. Just retains the stench and can't really be cleaned :(

If it's coming from the litter tray, suggest Worlds best cat litter extra strength. We always have to check it because we never smell any wee from it.

"100% natural, clumping cat litter, made from whole kernel corn, bio-degradable and flushable."

You are my friend aren't you?

I have tried most solutions, but will check out the links here.

Sadly our poor old puss is really ill, and I don't think has much time left, so I guess that will be that.

Our house isn't ours, and we were gutted when they wanted to lay carpets over the lovely floorboards.

I remember reading about iodine salt, you had to pour it on the stain, in a pile, let it absorb the pee, and dry then Hoover it up. Not only did we seem to constantly have mini salt mountains around the house, but we destroyed our Hoover, because we could never get rid of the smell of cat pee every time we hoovered afterwards.

Are you my friend?

Occasionally I get a whiff of it in our house, in spite of my old-girl cat not being allowed outside of the kitchen these days (where she has a very lovely bed and snug).

It's not coming from the cat litter. I've tried using one of those UV light things and can't find any pee anywhere.

My house also often smells of shit, because 20mo DC2 has a knack for doing huge smelly nappies where the smell lingers, even though the offending nappy has long-since been deposited in the outside bin.

I do use air fresheners/neutralisers.

Maybe the smell of pee is coming from the DCs

Don't tell her. She probably knows.

My DS was asking again today about us getting a cat. This thread has put me right off.

I only have carpet upstairs but my male.cat still seems to.find places to pre despite having his own litter tray!

My brother walked into my house once and told me it smelt "catty". There was a bit of shouting from me and he stormed out before walking straight back in again (it was raining) but we are now on speaking terms.
Basically, I would avoid it unless she isn't cleaning up after the cats and seems oblivious. She probably knows and is trying to minimise the smell. There is very little that can be done about animal smells.

Are you my friend? I can smell it too, but clean the litter tray constantly. Open windows and fabreeze before guests arrive. Blush Blush

She'll know! My poor sister's house smelled of cat wee but she had tried EVERYTHING to try and stop the cats peeing where they shouldn't. So, don't tell her, she'll know already.

Could you gift her some pot purée which just happens to match the room you usually sit in for coffee?!

I know mine does as the cats go through phases of peeing somewhere. Months without it and then they do it again.

We were seriously considering Lino in the hallway. But now we are moving and leaving the stinky carpet behind Grin

Our utility room/ store room is jouned to the conservatory and smells all catty and they spray in there to and it wafts through. I use Neutradol airfreshener spray a block and it smells nicer.

One of the little buggers has pissed on my Lloyd Loom ottoman that stands in my hallway. Grrrrr!

If she's anything like me she will already know!

Not sure how you tackle it.

We had a problem with our lovely old cat when she was very old.

Surgical spirit! Advice I found at the time was; wash area with 10% warm solution of bio washing powder/liquid. leave to dry. Then apply surgical spirit, put it in a spray bottle if easier, might be more effective. Test inconspicuous area first to check it won't cause damage.

For carpeted areas, you may need to cut out underlay and treat surface underneath. We had no carpeting, and had floorboards; you still get the smell so you also have to spray it down the cracks between.

Also generally wiped around with surgical spirit and it seemed to work. HTH

Are there some cat piss trolls about? There are at least 20 cat piss threads showing at the moment!

No that would be obscenely rude. Also I assume she has a nose? So she’s probably aware. You’d just be making her feel shit and embarrassed.

I think someone is spamming with anti-catpiss products but I've not actually seen the content of the deleted messages.

I was also thinking this. It is giving cats a bad rep.

Piss off spammer, you are boring.

I'd definitely want to know. I'd be mortified, and it may be a little awkward but I'd be very grateful.

I'd then begin to wonder WTF my other friends hadn't mentioned it!

But then again, she could be like my mum, who, when I mention that the house smells like wet dog said "no it doesn't". Ok, then, it doesn't, it must be my nose...
