HELP! Police at my door - apparently I have committed an offence.........

Police just came as they have received a complaint against me.

Yesterday afternoon I nip to Tesco after school pick up. No P&C spaces so I park further down in a row of which is almost all empty spaces. I have a large 7 seater (4 DC) and get fed up of people parking so close that I can't get the toddler into his car seat without a struggle, so I park a quarter way over the next space hoping no one will park in that space as there are plenty more empty spaces next to it. I rush round, get a call from DD as she has forgotten her keys and is waiting outside the front door at home, so go quicker, get outside and find some BUFFOON has parked in the space I have parked over, so close that I can only just about get the door open on the toddler's side. The next space was empty!

As a see this, I hold my hands up and say to the DC, 'For gods sake, why did this idiot have to park so close' not seeing that there is a teenage boy sat in the car. I was not actually talking TO him at that point.

Conversation then goes something like this:
Boy shouts out 'my dad parked it not me'. I say something like, 'well you should tell him that I parked like this so I could get my child in car, now I can't, he could have parked further along'. He says' you should'nt have parked over the line'. I tell him I can park where I like, there's no law against it. He says 'well we can park where we like as well'. I tell him it would be common decency for his father to make sure the next car can open their doors. As I am in a rush, I try to squeeze DS through the door, hitting his head in the process. He starts crying. The boy in the next car laughs. I take the trolley back muttering 'tosser' to myself and give him an evil stare as I drive off furious at myself for not parking in the middle of 2 spaces and for even having a dialogue with the boy.

So police just came and said I had committed a public disorder offence as I was 'shouting, screaming and swearing' at the boy which has left him very shaken as he suffers from anxiety. The boy wants a written apology from me and if I do that, it will not go any further. Otherwise I will have be interviewed and give a written statement.

I have said that I am not apologising as I have not committed any offence and the boy was mouthing back to me very confidently and did definitely not look anxious to me! I do actually suffer from anxiety and depression and this has completely knocked me for 6.

The police will call me to arrange an interview next week. I can't believe it. I am pretty sure I did not even raise my voice. There was no one else about except my DCs and they are adamant I did not shout or swear (I have even started doubting myself). I am going back to the store on Monday to request the CCTV footage but they are not sure if anything will show up in the car park and it probably won't have picked up my voice anyway to prove I was not shouting.

I cannot understand how the police can tell me that if I write an apology, they will drop it, when they have no proof that I did anything. They were making out I was guilty Angry. Does this constitute a public disorder offence? I was just about to go out with the DCs to park before the police came. I am frozen with fear now.

I might start carrying chocolate frosting around myself. It would go nicely with this popcorn.

Plomino · 22/04/2013 14:48

Keep on digging OP .

On and by the way , making someone's car unusable by smearing the door handles with frosting , however temporary , still counts as criminal damage . Section 1 criminal damage act 1971 .

And carrying the frosting specifically in order to do so ? An offence under section 3 criminal damage act 1971 .

3 Possessing anything with intent to destroy or damage property.

A person who has anything in his custody or under his control intending without lawful excuse to use it or cause or permit another to use it?
(a)to destroy or damage any property belonging to some other person; or
(b)to destroy or damage his own or the user?s property in a way which he knows is likely to endanger the life of some other person;shall be guilty of an offence.

cumfy · 22/04/2013 14:49

OTOH it seems likely the driver of the other car was anticipating trouble as a result of his actions, and left teen to guard it/ prevent being keyed.

YABUs all round. Grin

Whatwould one use to transfer the forsting from the tub to the handle?

Imagine the utter shame of being caught in the act.

Even Tesco would ban you for that.

MadBusLady · 22/04/2013 15:08

Everybody keep an eye out for a "Tescos have banned me when all I did was smear chocolate frosting on a tosser's car!" AIBU.

ryanboy · 22/04/2013 15:13

Op- You should not have behaved like that towards a minor on his own..He clearly wasn't responsible for the parking. You slag off his dad (who incidentally is in the right-you are in the wrong) call him a tosser and give him an evil stare. The boy wasn't 'mouthing off ' he was giving you reasoned and sensible responses to your ranting .
I have a 15 yr old son and he would be certainly shaken by the encounter with you, an adult, as I think most boys his age would be.

Sallyingforth · 22/04/2013 15:18

OP you still haven't answered the question of why you didn't get your child in the other side.
If you believe you are in the right, and are going to insist that everyone who disagrees with you is wrong, why the hell did you ask on here in the first place?
First you brought the car park problem onto yourself, and now you have brought this thread down onto yourself.
I really think you should give up now and enroll for an anger management course.

cornydash · 22/04/2013 15:57

I don't understand why the OP is complaining to the police now Confused

I wouldn't mind if the icing was artistically done. If the OP had written 'CUNT' in lovely scrolled writing on my car then I'd be impressed.

But as it is almost certainly a figment of someone's imagination, I doubt it will happen.

I cannot believe the self entitlement of your OP (the car parking part.)

We all have problems with space when parking - mainly due to the fact carpark spaces are too narrow for modern cars (not just 4x4s, most cars.) We would all love to park over 2 spaces at our convienience but we have a common decency to park in the spaces provided.

In my local Asda you can drive in, park in an area that you think is empty and deserted then come back to find the area has filled up with cars whilst you were gone. So people who have your attitude (parking over the line so no one will park next to you) cause problems when the car park gets busy.

In your case the area was still empty except the car parked next to you but that still doesn't give you the right to think you can park like that and THEN have a go at the person next to you for parking inconsiderately!

You could have easily got your dc in the otherside of car but it strikes me like you have a big self entitlement. That man had every right to park in that space and the fact you got yourself into an verbal arguement with a teenager when as the adult you should be able to contain your mouth speaks volumes.

Your OP left a very sour taste in my mouth because it sums up the selfish attidudes of some people today.

HintofBream · 22/04/2013 17:24

Please can I have a badge for being the very first person (Sunday, 8.43am) to ask why she couldn't use the other side of the car?

What a sweetie you are LineRunner, thank you. I accept with the utmost pleasure, and still live in hope of an answer from the OP.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 22/04/2013 17:36

Hint I wouldn't hold your breath :)

hedgefund · 22/04/2013 17:39

has anyone said 'it wouldn't have happened at waitrose' yet? Grin

ILoveFrogs · 22/04/2013 17:39

Sorry I've not read the whole thread but I am shocked that you thought it was reasonable to park your car like that! If I have no door space I use the opposite side and climb in the back, fasten DS in his seat while sitting on the back seats. Wee bit of a pain in the ass but not really that much of a hassle!
