In not wanting to move to Pickering?

I've been for a few hours and although it looked fine for a day trip it's in the middle of nowhere and there seems to be very little to do. Houses seem expensive and it's a drive to get anywhere. Am I totally wrong?

It's a lovely town with a v friendly community. Depends what you're used to I guess.

I'm used to be able to get to loads of musuems and hills within 45 minutes. I know York is an hour away but it's all on little roads. Not really bothered about community spirit as we keep ouraselves to ourselves and are not going to start being involved in loads of stuff. Steam train could lose it's appeal very quickly...

It's beautiful - but it is a bit isolated, specially in the winter if they shut Sutton Bank.

There are LOADS of places I don't want to move to. Are we starting a list?

Or do you need to relocate for some reason?

It's a historic market town, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and not far from Scarborough. I'd love to live somewhere like that!

York is much closer than that! 30 mins maybe. Hills, moors, coast all on the doorstep. Not very cosmopolitan perhaps...

Everyone likes different things. I like places like that and we live in a little village, I don;t like cities but my sister would go mad, she has to be in the city centre.

so yanbu to not want to live there if it isn't for you. Just remember we all have different needs and desires.

Surely it's on the edge of the moors OP? Or do you need hills to be bigger?

If what you're saying is that you don't want to live in a small community and would rather be near a city, fine, but otherwise the location's brilliant.

House prices there don't seem that bad - there are a lot of houses on the market that are stupidly overpriced but they're the ones that have been on the market for several years. The ones that sell go for more reasonable prices.

You might want to look closely at the secondary school. There are better ones in other nearby towns.

i really love pickering - we're going on holiday there (again) this year

but i wouldn't want to live there for the same reasons you give - crap public transport, long shlep to a decent supermarket, stinking rush hour traffic on the wee little roads...

Exactly Bronte. Also the primaries don't seem brilliant, son is currently at an outstanding school and I can't find one near to Pickering.

Where is it you have to be near? Malton and Helmsley both nicer IMO, but it does depend where you have to be. Don't rule out the whole area though, it's not that grim up north Wink

Funnily enough, just been looking at houses there on Rightmove. I'd like it, but I'm used to rural.

Do you have to be in Pickering or would nearby for a commute do? Decent theatres in York & Scarborough. Plenty of museums & love Castle Howard which has plenty on.

I like Pickering (steam train!) but tend to agree that it's one of those places that is possibly nicer to visit than live in, in terms of stuff going on and how far you have to drive to get to more stuff going on.

It's not far from Whitby. I reckon I could live in Whitby.

It's up to you how you live your life obviously but I question whether anywhere other than the most anonymous of cities is really going to suit you if you are so unprepared to become part of the place.

I've only visited Pickering once but wouldn't completely rule it out as somewhere worth living. Although with Whitby up the road I'd probably opt for there!

It's too close to Whitby afaiac. We had a holiday near there and no, I couldn't do it. We have a tiny property in York and I could just about do that but not my choice in Yorkshire - that bloody one way system. My DH is from Yorkshire and we will relocate in due course but I think more likely Harrogate/North Leeds. There are better places than Pickering I think, Beverly, Wetherby, Helmsley, etc.. Can't stand bloody Whitby and Pickering is too close just too close. All those Moors and eventually bloody Whitby.

I'd prefer Ilkley and that would be too rural and isolated for me but at least it has cow n calf and not an abandoned castle.

I lived in malton as a kid. Dull. I returned home when DD was small. These market towns are ok when the kids are small but deathly dull for teenagers. Don't do it. I know pickering well and unless you want your kids to work at flamingo land, there is little else for them to do. Apart from drink. And drive. And do weed.
