In not wanting to move to Pickering?

I've been for a few hours and although it looked fine for a day trip it's in the middle of nowhere and there seems to be very little to do. Houses seem expensive and it's a drive to get anywhere. Am I totally wrong?

Its full of vampires and goths.

Pickering is lovely, what's the name of the woods near there?? Has a Go Ape. Best place ever for a picnic and lots of fab bike trails and walks.

Yorks not that far away. I suppose even Leeds wouldn't be too far for a big shopping trip. Pickering has good schools. Not too far from the coast. Lots to do in the area. My in laws live near there.

TunipTheVegedude · 12/04/2013 21:13

The East Yorkshire Moors?

jamdonut · 12/04/2013 21:15

Pickering is lovely! And its not far from loads of places. York ,Scarborough,Whitby, etc.

It gets a bit busy in the Summer, and a bit flooded when there's been torrential rain...

I live in Bridlington, which is 32 miles away. I regularly make the journey to see relatives there.

And there are no East Yorkshire Moors. Only North Yorkshire ones!!

jamdonut · 12/04/2013 21:22

Oh yeah...there's Pickering Castle, Beck Isle Museum, Eden Camp,Flamingoland, Dalby Forest, North York Moors Railway, Hutton-le-Hole Folk Museum,Helmsley Castle,Rievaulx Abbey..all pretty much either on the doorstep or within 30 minutes drive.

The War Weekend every Autumn...

York's Museums and galleries....

No...you're right...not much to do. Hmm

Blindingobvs · 12/04/2013 21:23

I think she means the wolds. Don't be fooled into thinking york is close. Its 20 mins to Malton then another 30 mins on the a64 which can be a nightmare in summer, sometimes taking 2 hours if theres been a crash, then another half hour to get into york city centre. And getting back will be jammed by caravans going to scarborough in the summer. The malton roundabout on the 1079 a64 roundabout is hell in summer. Inavoid at all costs.

jamdonut · 12/04/2013 21:31

It is a 50 minute drive to York from Bridlington...maybe a little bit more in the Summer. A bit less from Pickering.
I've never been caught in a jam at Malton, even before we lived in Brid. We used to travel up from Herts 3 or 4 times a year, and always in the Summer.

TeacupTempest · 12/04/2013 21:32

20 mins from pickering to malton? Honestly I can get from near whitby to York in just over an hour!

Yes you have to avoid peak holiday travel times but still

Blindingobvs · 12/04/2013 21:35

But if u live there, you cant. I used to live in malton and work in york. 25 mins to grimston bar and that was with speeding and everything.

Are you being made to live in pickering?

AwkwardSquad · 12/04/2013 21:52

Pretty but dull and the roads are a nightmare. Depends what you want from where you live, though. It's a North Yorkshire market town. Pretty, safe and quiet, good schools, but often also dull, smug and insular.

York's museums and galleries... I like York but it's not exactly known for its museums and galleries. But oh, yeah, Flamingoland! Whoop.

MrSlant · 12/04/2013 21:59

Pickering is a lovely town, I wouldn't mind living there. Mind you it's pretty cosmopolitan compared to where I live now Wink. There's Scarborough with it's great theater and York is amazing and not that far.

TunipTheVegedude · 12/04/2013 22:01

York not known for its museums?
Jorvik, NRM, Castle Museum... and the Yorkshire Museum and loads of little ones.

Blindingobvs · 12/04/2013 22:05

awkward was being sarcastic but the joke fell flat. #awkward

Okay, I was exaggerating and expressing myself somewhat childishly (it's a Friday, I'm allowed) but no I don't really think York is all that impressive when it comes to its cultural offering, particularly when you think that it's a university town. The visual art and theatre in particular is very conservative.

ColdfeetPinksocks · 12/04/2013 22:24

I think it's probably within HullDad's catchment area. So that's a minus.
