AIBU?

To be shocked that my new GP is extremely fat

I took my dd to our new lady GP this week as she had become very prone to bad acne breakouts prior to her period.

The doctor suggested she cut out sugar and carbohydrates from her diet as she was probably diabetic (didn't do any blood tests), and also suggested she try to lose weight as she would be prone to a weight problem later in life. DD is 12, 5'8" and weighs 11 stone and to be honest is as thin as a reed.

The doctor, however, was like a little rotund teletubbie. She was only young, around mid-30's, and my temptation was to tell her to take some of her own advice.

I don't think health professionals should be overweight, particularly in this day and age when obesity is frowned upon and there are lots of resources available to help you lose weight. I'm no twiggy myself but do try to stay a reasonable weight for my health and self-esteem.

Just to add I was horrified because I didn't think I needed to lose weight, not because I was annoyed at what she was saying because she was big!

whatever, 5 foot 8 and 11 stone is acceptable weight, and depending on how the girl is built, she could well be slim.

get real. Models are sick freaks, nothing to aspire to.

Can imagine the OP leaving the surgery and saying "Ignore that tellytubby lady doctor, darling. She doesn't know what she's talking about, she was probably too busy thinking about her next cream cake. Now, shall we pop to Gregg's for a little healthy snack, sweetie?"

YABU and a bitch, to boot. I also suspect you are on the wind-up. No doctor in this day and age would tell you to cut your child's sugar as they "might be diabetic".

And after that last post OP, you still say you're not on a wind up?

Why is everyone so certain that if you are a certain size you must the same weight as their daughter/sister/person they know who us the same size? It honestly doesn't work like that. I'm ten and a half stone, five seven and a size eight. I am very heavy for my size. We are not all constructed the same!

Would be interested in your height / weight statistics OP?

completely right op.
She shouldn't be allowed to work as a gp, she should be doing an appropriate job for a fat person, like working in McDonald's.
Actually, she shouldn't be allowed to work at all, there's nothing more off putting than looking at a fatty when you're trying to enjoy your chips.
We all know that fat people are lazy and worthless anyway, so maybe she should just be on the dole like the rest of them. She wouldn't be able to afford as much cake then either, so it might do her a favour!
Doesn't your gps surgery know that being fat makes years at medical school and all of her work experience worthless.
I'd change practices if I were you!

Latest research shows that obesity is much less of a factor in health that physical activity and fitness.

So, if you are thin but you don't exercise, you are MORE likely to die early than if you are fat but take regular exercise.

Having said that, the NHS is one of the unhealthiest workforces in the country, and the majority of GPs don't even know the recommended minimum levels of physical activity for people, so therefore don't give good advice.

It's a bit like smoking in the 60s - most GPs smoked so they didn't advise patients to give up smoking. Most GPs don't do enough exercise, so they don't advise patients to do more exercise.

FYI - MINIMUM recommendations for exercise are:

One hour per day for under 16s.

30 minutes five times a week for over 16s

This is moderate exercise (i.e. enough to make you sweat, get hot or breathless).

I am 5'11" and weigh about 10 and a half stone. I am slender and toned (do a lot of exercise) but by no means as thin as a reed. I wish!

OP's daughter may not be enormous but I would be surprised if she could be described as thin.

I'm not sure why people are comparing adults' height and weight because this is a child. If she exists. A child of 12 should not weigh the same as an adult. Enter the height and weight into the NHS children's BMI calculator, she is quite overweight. Although I'm sure someone will be along to tell me BMI is a total crock of shit and the child is a rugby player but it's good to get a rough idea.

Dont you just hate vulgarity, there isn't any need for it. Looks like the DM reports of this site are right. Shame as it's a really good resource for those genuine people wanting genuine advice and feedback.

Oh fgs if you had posted saying you were concerned re the Drs advice about your dd you would have got support and answers but you started a thread to slag off a Dr because she was fat! You have been called on it.

You have also received advice re your dd's weight, it could just be puberty but she is at the top range of weight for her height/age therefore maybe its something you should be keeping an eye on.

So are you saying you are not genuine and not wanting genuine advice and feedback? Hmm

Meh, my old GP smoked 40 a day but was still qualified to sign me up to the stop smoking course.
If you don't agree with what she told you, get a second opinion. Her weight doesn't come into it, you don't forfeit a qualification because you aren't a perfect size 10.

I am amazed at your dd's statistics too. My 12 year old dd is the second tallest girl in her class. She is 5'3" and weighs 7 stone. She is not a skinny child.

Dont you just hate vulgarity, there isn't any need for it. You are being rhetorical right? You can't post such a scathing OP then follow it up with a bitchy comment about her eating habits. You really shouldn't dish up a serving you cannot stomach yourself. Hmm

Report
Fenton · 12/04/2013 15:01

I'm confused about what you actually wanted here then? support?

You want to be unkind about someone's weight, take the piss about her eating habits and you want a parenting site to support you in that?

And just because one person calls you a cunt for it you support the DM's views?

You are definitely in the wrong place.

No wonder young girls are struggling with body image if people are saying a 5'8" 12 year old should be assessed using a chart designed for a child. How many children do you know who are that tall and haven't gone through puberty?
