AIBU?

To be shocked that my new GP is extremely fat

I took my dd to our new lady GP this week as she had become very prone to bad acne breakouts prior to her period.

The doctor suggested she cut out sugar and carbohydrates from her diet as she was probably diabetic (didn't do any blood tests), and also suggested she try to lose weight as she would be prone to a weight problem later in life. DD is 12, 5'8" and weighs 11 stone and to be honest is as thin as a reed.

The doctor, however, was like a little rotund teletubbie. She was only young, around mid-30's, and my temptation was to tell her to take some of her own advice.

I don't think health professionals should be overweight, particularly in this day and age when obesity is frowned upon and there are lots of resources available to help you lose weight. I'm no twiggy myself but do try to stay a reasonable weight for my health and self-esteem.

I like that she is a 'lady gp' as if is some startlingly rare thing for a gp to have a vagina, it reminds me of when the times couldn't cope with women (or a woman) becoming law lords and wrote about 'my lady lord justice Hale' Grin

11stone is 155lb? On the NHS bmi calculator that gives a bmi of 23.4 so perfectly fine.

But the GPS weight is irrelevant and the advice sounds bizarre.

My 13yo is 5'5 and weighs about 7 stone, she is a healthy height and weight, I doubt your dd is "thin as a reed" Confused

Grin at 'thin as a reed' 5'8" and 11 stone daughter. I was a chunky size 14 at that weight and I'm 2" taller.

My DS (16) is 6'2" and 11 stone. He IS as 'thin as a reed'. Hmm

Depending on her muscle as she may well look slim, she isn't overweight at that height and weight.

Ok I love you people less now that you are obsessing over the daughter weight thing

She is overweight at 12. No child should weigh 11 stone. Adult BMI and child's are not the same.

Although it is true that weights look different due to different body shape. At 11 stone and 5ft 7 I look fine. (so it's a shame I currently weigh 2 stone more than that!)

If she HSS or is going through puberty that weight is fine.

If she has or is going through puberty.

I used a child's bmi calculator.

Report
5madthings · 12/04/2013 01:14

If she hasn't gone through puberty she would be overweight, there is often an increase of weight at the onset of puberty. Her bmi of 23 puts her at the higher end of normal for her age/height/weight but not overweight. So a lot depends on her build ie is she sporty and has a high muscle percentage.

Anyway it all Sundsvall's cks tbh, a gp wouldn't say she seems diabetic and not do any tests etc.

All sounds bollocks tbh

Interesting comments. It's not a wind-up. She also gave her medication to stop her bleeding when I'd already told her she wasn't bleeding. Maybe she was too busy thinking about her next cream cake to focus on what I was saying Grin

I'm struggling here, you try to stay a reasonable weight for my health and self-esteem but have a dd who seems to be an unhealthy weight and you are criticising a GP for being overweight.

You then say GP suggests dd is diabetic but doesn't test Confused

And the latest is offering her meds to stop bleeding when you just went in about acne.

It sounds like a wind up.

Maybe she was too busy thinking about her next cream cake to focus on what I was saying Give over OP and stop chatting shite. My mum took it personally that her kids were fat too. People will be just as scathing about your dd too if you don't get your head out of your arse. Hmm

As offensive and ridiculous your post is OP, I am actually loving the description 'rotund tellytubby' Grin

Also, I think you have a point when it comes to certain health professionals. I have no problem with a GP being overweight. However, I have been in psychiatric hospitals for anorexia and once has a nutritionist who was seriously obese. I could never concentrate on what she was saying or take her advice on board because I couldn't stop focussing on her fat and obsessing over the fact that if I did as she said I'd look like her. Yes, I know the issue was in my head not on her body but a nutritionist who specialises in the treatment of eating disorders probably got that reaction from a high percentage of her patients and I doubt she was as effective at her job as a healthy but slim person would have been.

I think YABVVVVVVU.
My best GP was a man who was as fat as he was tall. he was the kindest man I've met. Not only kind, a phenomenally good GP.
I agree, nobody suggests someone may be diabetic and doesn't follow it up.

5ft 8 and 11 stone could not possibly be 'as thin as a reed'.

I am 5'9" and about 10.5 stone. I am most definitely not 'thin as a reed'. Grin Man, I wish.

Nice try, mildly amusing even, but not to be taken seriously imho!

She may have said she could be prone to insulin resistance..maybe she was thinking PCOS rather than diabetes. It can cause the acne.

And can caise weight gain later through poor response to carbs, so reducing them is sensible.

So..I doubt she was calling your DD fat. Read about PCOS.

Your snarky comnents about her weight are out of order

A BMI of 23.4 for a child is considered overweight. 91st percentile.

Report
Bunbaker · 12/04/2013 07:09

Actually I can see where the OP is coming from. To be told to lose weight by an overweight person brings to mind a sentence with the words pot, kettle and black in it.

The fact that the doctor was female is irrelevant.
