AIBU?

To be shocked that my new GP is extremely fat

I took my dd to our new lady GP this week as she had become very prone to bad acne breakouts prior to her period.

The doctor suggested she cut out sugar and carbohydrates from her diet as she was probably diabetic (didn't do any blood tests), and also suggested she try to lose weight as she would be prone to a weight problem later in life. DD is 12, 5'8" and weighs 11 stone and to be honest is as thin as a reed.

The doctor, however, was like a little rotund teletubbie. She was only young, around mid-30's, and my temptation was to tell her to take some of her own advice.

I don't think health professionals should be overweight, particularly in this day and age when obesity is frowned upon and there are lots of resources available to help you lose weight. I'm no twiggy myself but do try to stay a reasonable weight for my health and self-esteem.

According to the NHS weight checker, a 12 year old who is 5ft 8inches and weighs 11 stone is in the 95th centile of weight for that height, so would be classed as 'overweight'. The doctor is - in theory - correct.

They've done a study showing 80% of the parents of overweight children fail to recognise that their children are overweight. Perhaps you also fall into this category OP?

As for your doctor - well, it's a bit disempowering for someone being told they ought to lose weight that this message is delivered by someone who has clearly not been able to do this themselves. Particularly as doctors are seen as people who are extremely able, intelligent and self-disciplined.

itsraining Biscuit I would change your GP as you clearly have a problem with her

I shall jump off the fence now.

I met a GP at a social function last week. She was very chatty and was giving me dietary advice about DD. She was also very obese and at first I admit that I did wonder why she wasn't following her own advice. It transpired that she had her own health issues that caused her weight problems.

I simply wanted to say that it is easy to judge when you don't have the full story. Although I still think the OP has a point in questioning why a GP might talk about her daughter's weight issues when she clearly has her own weight issues to deal with. Just the same as someone holding a fag in their hand telling other people not to smoke.

Do as I say and not as I do.

Ok, I agree whole heartedly that the OP is talking shite and her attitude towards her GP is awful but I will point out that I'm 5'1 I am currently 10st 6 after having DS3, I have giant boobies and an hour glass shape, I'm a size 8. A bit of flab post birth but no way am I overweight. ( Although my BMI says I am )

What was you expecting, I will never sit behind my computer screen (or in RL) slagging off a doctor for his/ her weight.

It's a health care professional's job to provide treatment and care, as well as making sure people are fully informed on how to keep themselves healthy and safe. If my doctor can treat me when needed and give me advice I need about contraception, nutrition, etc. I couldn't give a shiny shite what they look like.
And actual LOL about "people in health professions shouldn't be allowed to smoke." What should be done - random spot checks at home?
You sound horrible.

What's disgusting is your hate filled and judgemental opinions.
I think that those are much more inappropriate than anyone smoking or a fat gp.
I wonder what qualifies you to make these judgements.
Either you're a troll or a nasty and spiteful person. I sincerely hope it's the former, otherwise you'll be passing your vile attitude on to real life children, which would be tragic for them.

Crikey they can't impart knowledge which they are qualified to give due to weight.

What weight does ones opinion cease to matter or indeed become offensive?

I hate those that ridicule other's appearances - disgusting.

The post isn't about how tall/heavy dd is, it's about the fact that unhealthy (overweight) 'health' professionals giving advice to other people about their weight isn't right.

Same as people in the health profession should not be allowed to smoke. Good on the NHS for changing their policies so that nobody is able to smoke anywhere on NHS premises. Might stop those people in wheelchairs and pyjamas holding onto their drip in one hand with a fag in the other. Disgusting.

I'm 5ft8 and when I weighed 11 stone I was over weight. 10st9 is my maximum before I tip into the over weight category.

My feedback was genuine - your post was offensive (like your choice of "news"paper) .

And if you hate vulgarity then you must suffer self loathing.

Fine to complain about treatment you feel to be incorrect but your post was aimed at digging fun at someone's appearance - not pleasant reading.

P.S OP, did you just join the site, then post the most goady thing you could think of, so you'd get replies like the above, so you could justify dismissing the site?

If so I think it's safe to say no one will miss you Hmm

Adult bodies are not the same as 12 year old bodies even if that 12 year has finished growing. Anyway, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

5madthings · 12/04/2013 22:14

If she has gone through puberty and stopped growing ie height wise then she is her adult height, and her weight is fine for that adult height. That's the point.

Report
crashdoll · 12/04/2013 22:09

It's absurd that anyone could think a 12 year old is considered a fully grown adult even if she has been through puberty.

PAHH HEEE HA HURRRRRR

Sorry, wrong thread.

Just because it's the NHS doesn't mean it cannot be absurd.

Report
crashdoll · 12/04/2013 21:40

In an NHS clinic, they would use an under 18s BMI calculator. Argue with me all you like but I am certain of this.

Report
ILikeBirds · 12/04/2013 21:32

5 foot 8 and 11 stone gives a BMI of 23, what's 'wrong' about that?

A 12 year old that is that height and post puberty can be assessed as an adult would be and it's absurd to claim that those stats = clinically overweight.

I am 5' 10" and if I were to ever get down to 11 and a half stone I would be slim. I can believe those given by the OP, though I disbelieve the rest of it.
my DD started her periods at 10 and has not grown since she was 11. This is not uncommon, and if the OP's DD is 5' 8" (an inch taller than my DD, then she as probably gone through puberty and should be judged as an adult. I also don't take the phrase 'thin as a reed' to mean skinny, just slender.

Report
5madthings · 12/04/2013 21:30

crash doll if she hasn't gone through puberty but given her height I would assume she has and then you would calculate her bmi as an adult and no she isn't overweight.
