To be shocked at Game of Thrones - it's very rude!

I just got a copy of series 1 of Game of Thrones from a mate.

It's very rude. It's like Lord of the Rings, only with tits and incest. I had heard about it and thought DS 14 would enjoy something like that. After watching it myself, I think he would enjoy it a little too much.

I think it's fab, but I haven't seen any other TV series that feature so much full frontal nudity. It even has willies!

AIBU to be totally shocked at how rude it is?

Well, many of the women do become kick-ass. But there's still a hell of a lot of other awful stuff directed towards women. And sometimes they only become kick-ass after something really awful is done to them Sad

infamouspoo · 10/04/2013 18:45

'They've excised all the tiresome traipsing around the Trident and the riverlands and random peasants getting murdered in unpleasant ways and random bandits riding along and characters being introduced and then 5 pages later once you've dutifully read their extensive descriptions and lineages...'

Snorted tea out of my nose at that Grin

bettycocker · 10/04/2013 19:00

I was also shocked at hearing the word "cunt". You don't hear that much on TV shows. Grin

I had no idea how rude this was when I got the first series on DVD - I'd just heard people saying it was brilliant.

5 minutes in and I was Shock

I read someone saying that every time they need the audience to concentrate on something important, they have a main character explain it in a speech, while two minor characters go at it in the background, just to make sure everyone is paying attention. Grin

It is brilliant though. I rather like Bronn too. Although I heard that Burn Gorman of Torchwood fame is supposed to be in season 3 or 4 and I may have to drop Bronn like a slightly grubby hot potato in favour of some nice, smouldery Owen-Harper-ness.

I heard that they're contracted for 4 seasons but that those will cover more than 4 books.

MrsJaqenHgar · 10/04/2013 19:32

Betty, one of my favourite lines is 'there's no cure for being a cunt' uttered by the wonderful Bronn.

The sex and violence doesn't bother me. So much so that we allowed baby DD to be an extra in Season 3. She will, however, be about 30 before we allow her to watch the series and see her own performance Grin

kungfupannda · 10/04/2013 19:34

My colleague knew I'd been watching it and she asked me if I thought it would be suitable for her 9 year-old son to watch - I hadn't really gone into detail about the level of sex and violence!

I think my shriek of "NO! By no means, NOOOOOOO!" could be heard at the other end of the county.

KarmaBitch · 10/04/2013 19:38

I've just downloaded the first book on to my kindle. Looking forward to reading later.

I think I will take the advice to read it first before I tune in. :)

squoosh · 10/04/2013 19:39

Mmmmmmm.........Bronn............................

mrsdinklage · 10/04/2013 20:01

no spoilers here - but if my dh gets any action with Jon Snow I will chop them both up and feed them to the wolves Grin

TeacupTempest · 10/04/2013 20:03

I am on book 4.

Haven't dared open the box set of the first season yet incase it doesn't live up to the book!

BeyondIsBloodOfTheDragon · 10/04/2013 20:03

I felt a name change was in order Grin

BeyondIsBloodOfTheDragon · 10/04/2013 20:05

I read the entire wiki entries of every character, too impatient to wait til I'd finished the books!

TeacupTempest · 10/04/2013 20:07

I love the books so much. I can barely remember what my family look like!

Yes, some of the US commenters have taken to calling it (s)exposition Grin

I sort of see what people mean about the treatment of women, but isn't it actually fairly realistic given the social systems of the society being portrayed? Lack of equality of opportunity is quite an imoortant theme - see eg. Sansa's worry in s1 about possibly only having daughters, Arya wanting swordfighting lessons, Dany being used as a bargaining chip by her brother etc. etc. If anything the main female characters, whonare mostlymfairlymhigh society, get a better deal than women in general, eg. that chieftain north of wall committing incest with all his daughters. Not actually a million miles removed from the reality of life for women in Europe say 850 yrs ago? Leaving aside the extensive incest...

So if you're going for that as a setting, the treatment of women is not unrealistic, so not gratuitous? Although that then begs the more general question of whether it would be better for an author to stray further from our own past reality and try for a pre-hitech setting with more social equality.

All of which is a bit deep. Personally not that enchanted by any of the totty I have to say. Aiden Gillen has long been a fave but as Littlefingernis looking a bit worn. Others all too blond, too pretty or a bit long in the tooth, although I'm awaiting the arrival of Ciaran Hinds with interest (no Sky so just started s2 on dvd).

Sorry for random m's - really not good with a tablet keyboard...

JeanBodel · 10/04/2013 20:27

I too fervently admire Ser Jorah 'friendzone' Mormont and Bronn son of 'You wouldn't know him'.

Have you seen these? There are three pages of them if you can work out how to click through.

Game of Thrones

WorriedMummy73 · 10/04/2013 21:09

Pmsl at 'Ser Jorah 'friendzone' Mormont!

Is it wrong that I'm just as excited about this thread and finding others who luffs GoT as I am about the books/show???

daveydavidson · 10/04/2013 21:18

anyone else think Jonh Snow is actually Eddard's nephew? ie daughter of Robert Baratheon and Lyanna Stark? Theory from a friend of mine. I just don't beleive Eddard would be so un-noble!!

Speaking of sexyness/nuddyness, have anyone seen the tudors? Jesus, that makes GOT seem like Pride and Predujice...

WorriedMummy73 · 10/04/2013 21:21

Nope, Jon is definitely Eddard's. It's not to do with him being un-noble, but he was just married and went off to war. At that early point in the marriage they didn't love each other and he had a thing with Jon's Mother.

Can you not see how much Jon looks like Sean Bean? Snort.

OzmaofOz · 10/04/2013 21:25

Yes I also think Jon is Neds nephew, I think he found Jon at the tower of joy with Lyanna. I would actually be a bit disappointed if he wasn't a targ / stark, I thought that he was the song of ice and fire...that it is about I'm finding out who he is...like I say I would be really disappointed if he does turn out to be Ned and Wyllas son

OzmaofOz · 10/04/2013 21:25

Him not I'm - DYAC

gobbledegook1 · 10/04/2013 21:26

Spartacus anyone!?

Boring fact: The dog in Game of Thrones that is killed by Ned Stark is ralated to my woofie.

OzmaofOz · 10/04/2013 21:30

Is Spartacus any good ? Haven't seen it at all. Wouldn't mind getting it to a good series as there is bugger all on telly these days. [moany]
