BBC saying that Thatcher has died following a stroke

OP posts:
BubblePopper · 08/04/2013 13:38

While agreeing with some about how damaging a lot of her policies were and having a general feeling of loathing towards her I nevertheless get a very uncomfortable, nauseous feeling from all the gloating following the death of anyone :(

AnyFucker · 08/04/2013 13:38

Afternoon, Helen. Have you seen the thread in Site Stuff regarding this topic ?

@AnyFucker

Afternoon, Helen. Have you seen the thread in Site Stuff regarding this topic ?

No, but I'll go and look now

BegoniaBampot · 08/04/2013 13:39

my husband just said, 'she was loved and admired by many, just not the poor folk or the Scottish, or the Catholics in NI, possibly the Welsh'.

Strangemagic · 08/04/2013 13:39

Celebrating ?? Biscuit

MarianaTrench · 08/04/2013 13:40

I couldn't really care whether she's dead or not as she's been beyond doing any more harm for years now. However, as commented up thread, her friendship with Pinochet alone was plenty to condemn her in any right thinking persons eyes. As for the havoc she wreaked in her own country, for those of us who grew up in the places she particularly fucked over, I think we'll skip feeling sorry for her family. Especially the arms dealer.

Scrazy · 08/04/2013 13:43

How are the ex mining communities fairing now? We weren't affected by her policies to a great extent were do wonder is life better or worse for the younger generation.

ComposHat · 08/04/2013 13:43

or miner, or any industrial workers. or public sector workers, or students or minorities or anyone who wasn't employed in the stock exchange, or a loud mouthed Essex cunt.

timidviper · 08/04/2013 13:43

Hecsy and Chaz I'm with you guys. I watched my home city of Liverpool brought to its knees and saw my Dad have to go and sign on after years and years of honest work, knowing that he would probably never get a job again as he was over 50.

I hate what she did but respect her achievements. I do just hope that our current load of muppets do not want a state funeral when so many people are suffering.

redlac · 08/04/2013 13:44

your husband is a very wise man BegoniaBampot

Dominodonkey · 08/04/2013 13:44

I'm too Hecsy

Fantastic post - as a right winger I really appreciate it when the left take the time to think about MT and what she did in that way. I can totally see why many hate her but as you say she deserves more than people celebrating her death even if it is just due to her position as first female PM.

redlac · 08/04/2013 13:45

I think there would riots in Scotland if she had a state funeral

What was it Frankie Boyle said? ?Give everyone in Scotland a shovel and we'll dig her a grave straight to the pits of hell"

Vickibee · 08/04/2013 13:48

There won't be much love lost for her in Barnsley where her policies decimated comunities that are still paying the price today.

Socially she has a lot to answer for too, sold off social housing and privatised our utilities, we are all paying for that

Vickibee · 08/04/2013 13:49

Separate her politics for her as a person, don't wish I'll of the dead

ComposHat · 08/04/2013 13:50

I do just hope that our current load of muppets do not want a state funeral when so many people are suffering.

I kind of hope they do in a way, the outcry it will provoke will probably equal the poll tax protests in their ferocity. I'd be booking the Where I grew up (mining town in the Midlands suffered horrendously as a result of Thatcher and it is not just the industrial decline which to a certain extend was inevitable, but the glee with which Thatcher dismantled communities and seemed not to give a toss about the human carnage it created. We are still living through her legacy now.)

HerrenaHarridan · 08/04/2013 13:50

Timid viper.

I totally agree, and it's funny how no-one ever talks about some of Hitlers achievements, before he was in power Germany's road and rail was a complete mess he left behind an incredibly effective established road and rail programme.

Did you know that he also had nigh on 100% employment at one point

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/04/2013 13:51

Scrazy
How are the ex-mining communities faring
valleyskids.org/

Not brilliantly in S Wales.

However, the reality is that heavy industry would have probably declined with or without Thatcher, its hard to compete on a global scale with China, India and Australia etc.

SugarMouse1 · 08/04/2013 13:52

Why do people hate her so much?

Right to buy?

The miners strike? Well arthur scargill was a poor leader- which is partly why they lost- and Britain had almost stopped using coal anyway

The Falklands War?- yes I have to agree that was a waste of time, some islands with more sheep then people, but then Afghanistan is even worse?!

Stopping inflation- not a bad thing

Stopping school milk?

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 08/04/2013 13:54

Really badly, scrazy. The mining village I grew up in died. It's never recovered.

And like I say, I lived through that year and all the years afterwards. Life was never the same. That year my dad was on strike was the worst of my life. Of all our lives.

But I still feel as I describe above.

Theicingontop · 08/04/2013 13:54

Did you just compare Margaret Thatcher to Hitler?

PeaceandFUCKINGLove · 08/04/2013 13:56

If you don't want her to have a state funeral, sign this e petition.

Scrazy · 08/04/2013 13:57

Chaz thanks for the link.

Have to say that times have changed since the 70's wrt how our economy works and it might have had to happen whoever was in power. It happened fast under Thatcher.

I doubt the Students will hate her as much as they should this coalition when it hits home just how much debt a degree entails.

IIRC the last PM to get a state funeral was Churchill in 1965 and he was the only PM in the 20th Century to get one so why are people supposing that Thatcher would have a state funeral?
