to not shed a single tear?

BBC saying that Thatcher has died following a stroke

OP posts:
Scrubber · 08/04/2013 13:10

I'm with you OP. I don't care if it's mean or childish.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 08/04/2013 13:11

I don't shed a single tear for anyone who dies who I don't know. I doubt most people actually leak from their eyes when someone they don't know dies. People say they do, but it's rarely true.

My dad was a miner. We lived through the strike. He was out for the full year and it was hell.

I hated margaret thatcher's policies and political views. With a passion.

But. That woman stood by what she believed in. Much as I hated her politics, I respected and continue to respect that. I loathed her views but by god she had the strength to stand by them. You don't find that in many politicians.

And she was the first and to date only female prime minister. I think that is worth recognising. Politics is really male dominated. It took a lot for her to get to where she got to.

And finally, I think that part of the reason she is so hated is simply that she was a woman. Male prime ministers have done some dreadful things, but none so hated as her or for so long. I don't think it's coincidental.

I hope that MN doesn't go crazy with the MT loathing and fighting at this time. It isn't going to end well.

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 08/04/2013 13:11

Well said Altinkum

Lets not give the DM/Telegraph etc more reason to call us a nest of vipers. Yes, there will be many to see the back of Thatcher but some of the comments made are just horrible.

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 08/04/2013 13:14

Thats me off MN for a while, tasteless threads like this one.

Tasteless? Have you any idea the damage she wrought on the area that I grew up in? AN evil evil woman.

YANBU.

As YoutheCat says, it's an odd feeling, but I'm glad she's gone.

firesidechat · 08/04/2013 13:18

Very classy post OP!

Wouldn't it be more respectful to keep this to yourself, bearing in mind that she has grieving family who may care alot.

I'm sure we are all aware that lots of people didn't much care for her or her politics. No need to say it though. I won't cry either, but I have some admiration for her and think it is sad.

SunflowersSmile · 08/04/2013 13:20

A bit of decorum needed I think....
A predictable thread...

No, Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin etc were evil. MT was merely doing what she thought was right to ensure the continued economic viability of the UK.

99problems · 08/04/2013 13:23

I have no idea what Thatcher did or anything about her policies. Why is she so unpopular? She was around long before 'my time' so forgive my ignorance but could someone please explain why people think of her as evil?

Regardless, I think it's sad she's died, her children have lost their mother.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 08/04/2013 13:23

I wonder what the overlap is like between people massively concerned for Mark and Carol's feelings, and preaching respect for Thatcher, and those who sought to make political capital out of the six dead Philpott children?

PeachActiviaMinge · 08/04/2013 13:24

No-one has asked you to shed a tear for her, her children will be doing that. I don't care what you think of her save your spite for the privacy of your own home and allow her family to mourn without seeing this all over the internet.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/04/2013 13:25

Hecsy
Good post. I'm from S Wales so no great love for Thatcher from me but I do think she was a honest politician even if I didn't agree with her.

Yes, do grow up.

googlyeyes · 08/04/2013 13:27

I agree the loathing directed at her is of a distinctly misogynistic bent.

As someone said earlier, male prime ministers have done terrible things throughout history (and as we speak!) but they seem to get off relatively lightly.

There is a unique venom felt towards her that makes me very uncomfortable.

BegoniaBampot · 08/04/2013 13:32

some people and areas were massively affected by her policies (still are) and some weren't. those that weren't will never understand.

Theicingontop · 08/04/2013 13:33

If you didn't agree with her politics, or particularly rate her as a human being, do the grown-up thing and keep your mouth shut.

No need.

MusicalEndorphins · 08/04/2013 13:34

Margaret Thatcher is dead?

HerrenaHarridan · 08/04/2013 13:35

Keep your own mouth shut and do some research!

ComposHat · 08/04/2013 13:35

sorry googly it has fuck all to do with misogyny - a hell of a lot to do with the destruction she wrought on communities across the UK. Take a walk around an ex-mining town and you'll see why she's so loathed.

Th*tcher is something that divides people (largely along north/south lines) and there is mutual incomprehension on both sides. I have no shame in saying that this is one of the happiest days and will be celebrating long into the night!

HelenMumsnet · 08/04/2013 13:37

Afternoon.

Just a reminder that, though we don't have a problem with strong opinions, robustly expressed, we may well delete posts that we judge to be beyond the pale.
