Lack of pig in ELC farm

yummymummy345 · 13/03/2013 14:19

Political correctness gone mad?
I bought the above farm today, only to be advised that the pig is no longer included due to religious reasons- What?!!

I do not eat certain animals however am not offended if they are included in a toy. Pigs are at the farm which is just part of life.

The purpose of purchasing the toy was to try and help my son with his speech using animals so would have liked the full set. (they have advised that I can ring up and order one which I will do but why just not include? perhaps I am ignorant but just can not see the potential offence).

YANBU.
Thats ridiculous!!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 13/03/2013 14:22

I don't eat pigs, but it wouldn't especially offend me to look upon its plasticised likeness on a toy farm. The toy abbatoir or the toy butcher's maybe, but not the farm.

HeadfirstForHalos · 13/03/2013 14:23

We are all vegetarians but have a huge toy farm set with lots of animals. None of them get "eaten", the cows get milked though! I don't see why it should cause offense. The pig could just be a pet or it could be given/thrown away.

travellingwilbury · 13/03/2013 14:24

Really ?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 13/03/2013 14:25

Who told you it was for religious reasons, please?

FreudiansSlipper · 13/03/2013 14:25

apparently this was he case a few years back when my aunt bought ds a farm puzzle

But the pigs are clearly there

ilovesooty · 13/03/2013 14:25

It was removed quite some time ago.

AudrinaAdare · 13/03/2013 14:26

There was a thread about this a year or two ago. My DS is autistic and obsessed with farms. He considered it "incomplete" without the pig so we wrote and were told that a pig would be sent to us Grin

Nothing ever came of it so we ended up giving the farm away!

TheNebulousBoojum · 13/03/2013 14:26

Some ELC farm sets are produced without a pig, mainly for the export market as they sell well in the ME.
Was this a standard set off the shelves in the UK? Did you check it, or just grab? They are usually very good about exchanging items.

twinklesparkles · 13/03/2013 14:28

Yanbu
I had a similar issue with a toy I tried to buy my ds recently

Have you checked ebay? They may have a piggy you could add to your farm :)

TheNebulousBoojum · 13/03/2013 14:28

Pig is still there.

LtEveDallas · 13/03/2013 14:33

This was a huge and ridiculous story 2 years ago courtesy of netmums.

The pigs were reinstated shortly after, except for certain overseas countries.

If you are in the UK and bought it from an ELC shop then I don't believe this happened to you. I think you are trying to start a racist goady thread.

BBC News Report HERE

Wewereherefirst · 13/03/2013 14:34

I was going to say exactly the same as LtEve.

ilovesooty · 13/03/2013 14:37

Interesting news report. Amazon sell the farms complete with pigs.

Presumably, if they want it to be realistic, the horses are now being used for food instead of the pigs...

SonOfAradia · 13/03/2013 14:42

Sometimes companies/local authorities can be a bit pee-cee and claim that some groups will be offended without actually finding out if indeed they are.

There was a classic case a few years ago near where we live. There was a bronze statue of a pig in a local park and the council removed it on the grounds that it offended local Muslims. The local press got hold of this and went to talk to representatives of said Muslims, who replied as follows:

"What? We never said a thing and actually we don't mind at all. And no-one asked anyway."

limitedperiodonly · 13/03/2013 14:44

Sorry LtEve I'm not laughing at you. It's just it always makes me laugh when such an important word is applied to such a stupid story.

You're obviously experienced at calming panicking people.

yummymummy345 · 13/03/2013 14:45

I bought the ELC farm today from a shop in southern England (50% off btw), and she asked if I wanted the other set of farm animals which came separately (which include the pig), however I had said its only the pig which is missing in the main farm which is why she mentioned that it was removed on religious grounds.

Why ? Where's the offense?

Love this comment under the indie article

Presumably the cow, sheep & chicken are also included in the 'My First Halal Slaughterhouse' toy set.

yummymummy345 · 13/03/2013 14:50

Blimey wewereherebefore dont read a thread which says 'Lack of pig in ELC farm' then if you have read before?!!!!!!! save it getting rather tedious for you.
