Lack of pig in ELC farm

yummymummy345 · 13/03/2013 14:19

Political correctness gone mad?
I bought the above farm today, only to be advised that the pig is no longer included due to religious reasons- What?!!

I do not eat certain animals however am not offended if they are included in a toy. Pigs are at the farm which is just part of life.

The purpose of purchasing the toy was to try and help my son with his speech using animals so would have liked the full set. (they have advised that I can ring up and order one which I will do but why just not include? perhaps I am ignorant but just can not see the potential offence).

The company that makes this dark exports all over the world, so doesn't include the pig because there are some countries where it would be unacceptable.

If you want a pig you can get a pig.

Non story.

LadyPessaryPam · 13/03/2013 14:52

Was it this set yummy?

ElkiesBrook · 13/03/2013 14:52

it's a marketing ploy Wink

you want a pig in your farm set, you have to buy extras

Wewereherefirst · 13/03/2013 14:53

LOL. 'Yummymummy'

TheNebulousBoojum · 13/03/2013 14:54

For some Muslim families, having a pig in the house in any form whatsoever would be haraam. I've known families like that, For others, having models of animals would be haraam, in the same class as having pictures of animals in the house.

Others would buy the set and get rid of the pig, and others wouldn't care either way. Unfortunately some companies go over the top about being PC and create unnecessary tensions because they haven't consulted the people in question.

LadyPessaryPam · 13/03/2013 14:54

Why not include the pig in sets sold in the UK? Or are poor old pigs going to become non-animals?

limitedperiodonly · 13/03/2013 14:54

So are you going to order the pig? And will you have to pay through the snout for it like elkie says? I won't sleep until I know.

TheNebulousBoojum · 13/03/2013 14:55

They do. Maybe that's why it was 50% off...some parts missing, mainly pig-shaped.

yummymummy345 · 13/03/2013 14:56

Unfortunately I am not making this up crazyness..

Was it reduced because the pig was missing? Or a piece of stock that was supposed to be exported but wasn't? hence the lack of pig

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 13/03/2013 14:58

Not all farms have pigs anyway. Maybe yours is a dairy farm.

ElkiesBrook · 13/03/2013 14:58

are there any llamas in the farmset?

LadyPessaryPam · 13/03/2013 15:00

There is a horse so it's obliviously supplying UK supermarkets.

I'm more shocked at the price of the Classic Farm Animal Set on the ELC website linked above. Fifteen fecking quid for 10 small plastic animals. Good grief.

SconeInSixtySeconds · 13/03/2013 15:03

Arf at obliviously supplying uk supermarkets!

SonOfAradia · 13/03/2013 15:03

Do Jews get offended by toy pigs or just Muslims?

Some do, most don't I would have thought.

I've heard some vegans are actually demanding that every animal in this farm set should be replaced by a lentil or tofu equivalent*

  • I may have made that last bit up.
AudrinaAdare · 13/03/2013 15:05

Yep, that was the one from the BBC link.

I didn't give a toss other than the fact that my pre-verbal DS screamed for days because it was "wrong" and didn't have the ability to understand why someone would make a farm without a pig. We had to make one out of plasticine.

He had five separate farms in those days taking up all our space. Thank fuck for iPads.

Jojobump1986 · 13/03/2013 15:06

This is going to sound really stupid but... It would never occur to me to look at a toy farm & think that the animals were for eating. The chickens lay eggs, the cows get milked, the sheep frolic in the fields & the pigs wallow in the mud. Obviously I know what ultimately happens to the real animals on a farm, I'd just never made the link between real farm life & toy farms! I might start setting up the toy farm at our toddler group a bit differently so none of our children grow up without making the link... Wink I won't really, honest!

photographerlady · 13/03/2013 15:09

I second the vegetarians and non pig eating folk who love farm sets in kid toys, will still have a soft spot for the little pink chap... not the same without him

seeker · 13/03/2013 15:11

It's cheaper for the company to make one set to ship all over the world and for people who want pigs to ask for them. As I said, non story.

Oh, and Jewish people do not have a problem with representations of pigs. Hindus don't have a problem with representations of cows. Muslims do have a problem with representations of pigs. No more bonkers than any other religious sensitivity.

CunfuddledAlways · 13/03/2013 15:11

just looked at happyland farm there is only 4 animals - horse, sheep, chicken and cow, it the write up it says 4 animals. farms obviously have more than this. non issue??

UniqueAndAmazing · 13/03/2013 15:16

I used to live on a farm.
they didn't have pigs.
they had grain, sheep, cows (posh brown ones, not milking ones) and a dog.

UniqueAndAmazing · 13/03/2013 15:16

I had chickens, but they were mine, not the farm's
