Lack of pig in ELC farm

yummymummy345 · 13/03/2013 14:19

Political correctness gone mad?
I bought the above farm today, only to be advised that the pig is no longer included due to religious reasons- What?!!

I do not eat certain animals however am not offended if they are included in a toy. Pigs are at the farm which is just part of life.

The purpose of purchasing the toy was to try and help my son with his speech using animals so would have liked the full set. (they have advised that I can ring up and order one which I will do but why just not include? perhaps I am ignorant but just can not see the potential offence).

So does this sell well in Denmark, the home of sizzling Danish bacon?

Muslim have problems with the representation of anybody, hence Moorish art being geometric. Maybe the old farmer should be replaced by a dodecahedron and the remaining animals by cubes and spheres?

Blu · 13/03/2013 15:18

This is just shit stirring. (pig, or cow manure, take your pick).

Pigs did temporarily disaappear, and were swiftly reinstated as this link shows here and the link from the Independent below says it was re-instated too. Or should that be re-instyted?

Hhowever, nothing wrong with a good old 'PC Gorn Mad' stiry from time to time - keeps 'em going.... and going.... and going....

Did you know that Red Cross shops don't have Christmas window displays?

[wooden spoon emoticon]

LadyPessaryPam · 13/03/2013 15:21

Blu, this is the current set on sale

www.elc.co.uk/HappyLand-Farm/134265,default,pd.html

No pig.

Your link is old, they went back on their promise to reinstate Porky.

Um yes HillBilly.

Blu · 13/03/2013 15:26

So, it has the 4 animals advertised.

Is this the same 'Goosefeather Farm' as advertised before and did include a pig?

There is no goose, no sheepdog (despite sheep)...

seeker · 13/03/2013 15:33

Oh, and you're not allowed (by law) to put up Christmas lights. Ever. Even at Christmas.

seeker · 13/03/2013 15:34

And you have to wear goggles to pull a cracker.

LadyPessaryPam · 13/03/2013 15:34

This product is no longer available. Apparently.

I know it seems trivial but pigs were domesticated in Europe in the Neolithic period and are part of the our cultural heritage. Now they are removed from a toy set because a vocal minority religion may not like them? I think it's pretty poor.

UniqueAndAmazing · 13/03/2013 15:34

[[http://www.elc.co.uk/HappyLand-Happy-Farm-Animals/134555,default,pd.html#q=farm there's no pig in the animals set either

Blu · 13/03/2013 15:35

The ELC does have animal sets that include pigs, as linked below to this one so why would they observe some presumed sensitivity over one set and not another

afaics the happyland farm is a set that does not have a pig (or goat, or goose) rather than a farm that has had the pig removed. The old farm had a sty and other stuff, this does not, it's a different set.

And why doesn't the Happyland farm have a goat?

I can imagine a huge internbational company like ELC working to the lowest common denominator so picking animals most likely to be recognised as farm animals around the world, and presumably pigs simply don't feature in many N African, ME or muslim world farms, whether or not there is a question of offence.

seeker · 13/03/2013 15:38

"Now they are removed from a toy set because a vocal minority religion may not like them? I think it's pretty poor."

No they aren't. They are removed because a company has such a close eye on its profit margin that it doesn't want to make two sets, one to sell in Europe and one to sell in the Middle East. Non story.

Blu · 13/03/2013 15:39

Ther is a pig in the classic farm animal set: The second para of the Product Information says "This Classic Farm Animal Set is a fun set of realistic animals for your child to enjoy. The Classic Farm Animal Set includes a horse, cow, donkey, goat, calf, sheep, pig, hen, lamb and goose. " And it is the small black and white animal to the R of the illustration.

Which rather undermines the promise that the whole thing is 'realistic' Wink

seeker · 13/03/2013 15:40

No nativity plays any more.

teatrolley · 13/03/2013 15:40

^ That. If you search 'Happyland' products in the ELC you'll see a family in traditional Saudi dress. It's obviously a big market for them.

NotADragonOfSoup · 13/03/2013 15:41

So you bought something with the picture of four farm animals on it and got a set with those four farm animals in it?

TSSDNCOP · 13/03/2013 15:43

Surely all farms only make horses now anyway Wink, so it may say it has pigs and cows and sheep when really we all know its just horses.

Are ELC in on the Great Conspiracy?

UniqueAndAmazing · 13/03/2013 15:44

oops i didn't close my link

UniqueAndAmazing · 13/03/2013 15:45

they don't have straw or grain in that farm either, should i complain?
i spent 8 years living on a farm, and that was all I heard or saw there!

seeker · 13/03/2013 15:48

And don't get me started on the shape of bananas.......

Blu · 13/03/2013 15:49

yummymummy345 · 13/03/2013 15:50

"Lack of pig in ELC farm indeed"... Early Learning Centre sell a variety of farm animal sets. You, OP, chose to buy the Happyland one, without a pig. It also does not include a goat, goose, lamb, calf, or any turkeys.

There is the hugely expensive Rosebud Village Farm set, which comes complete with pig. www.elc.co.uk/Rosebud-Village-Farm-Set/130144,default,pd.html#q=farm%20animals
There is the slightly less expensive (because you buy the animals separately, after which it will have cost exactly the same as the Rosebud) Brambledale Farm set, which includes a pig sty.

Lastly there is the Classic Farm Animal Set to go with a farm, which incorporates a very cute pig, and a satanic looking goat, presumably in order to upset both devout Muslims and Christians. (The mummy sheep has "lamb" stamped on her underside, and is therefore presumably Mutton Dressed As Lamb.)
