Pole dancing parties for eight year olds - starting a bit young?

So, whilst trawling the internet for a suitable party venue for one of my children I was fairly surprised to see pole dancing parties listed under 'children's party venues in Manchester' on the local netmums page www.netmums.com/manchester/local/view/parties/venues/pole-dance-and-beauty-party

So, 'Caters for adults and children's parties from 8+' - pole dancing parties for eight year olds? Am I missing something??!! Or, am I being unreasonable in my assertions that this is a bit inappropriate and perhaps takes girl's make-over parties to a whole new level? Surprised to see it advertised as a children's party venue, even more surprised to it it on said website.

Over to you fellow mumsnetters...

I don't understand the points being made about silks and hoops. Even if I knew what they were and could decide whether they had anything to do with the sex industry (guessing the required answer is no) what light does that shed on whether pole dancing itself is linked to the sex industry. The two aren't related surely.

Grin

The argument is that some circus performers use a form of pole as part of aerial acts- as they use silks (those ribbony things hanging from the ceiling that people climb up and slide down) and hoops (a from of trapeze, and because of this, if we think poles are queasily redolent of the so industry we have to think silks and hoops are too. Classic straw man. Not worth bothering about.

MrsDeVere, it was an eloquent and persuasive argument, you can't fail to have had your mind changed.

You up for some pole fitness tomorrow night? I'm going to wear my sparkly crop top. For grip. And my high heels. For...er...yes.

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 13/03/2013 22:53

Objectification of women stripping dressed up as ironic and cheeky and empowering = burlesque

Objectification of women stripping dressed up as sporty and empowering exercise = pole fitness

It depresses me that women still fall for this shit.

seeker · 13/03/2013 22:53

Don't forget to wash your hair. You'll need it to look it's best as you toss your head around......

Mumof2kiddies · 13/03/2013 22:54

No the point is a lot of the moves are the same on all equipment and just because they are done on a pole you connect it with stripping
how many of you have been to a strip club and know what they do ? You just know they have poles in then

Mumof2kiddies · 13/03/2013 22:55

We do pole fitness in bare feet and don't flick our hair so judgemental again

seeker · 13/03/2013 22:55

"The sex war was won[by men] the minute women started to do pole dancing as exercise"

Who said that? Whoever it was, he was right.

FreudiansSlipper · 13/03/2013 22:57

So mum you would send your daughters to one of the parties advertised?

catgirl1976 · 13/03/2013 22:57

Just to be clear Mumof2:

I don't think it "is ok for little girls to have make overs and photo shoot normally"

I connect pole dancing with stripping because that is where it comes from

I hope someone starts junior burlesque. It's a bit more middle class.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 13/03/2013 23:00

Ugh. I can only hope that anybody who has or did book one of her children's parties has done some research on her - including her tumblr account.
Certainly would not want her around my daughter.

Mumof2kiddies · 13/03/2013 23:01

I wouldn't to that party and I wouldn't to a make up party but I would a pole fitness for fun
But strippers dance with a pole not on it and times have moved on and people's judgements have stayed in the past
Judgements are made when people don't know what they are judging

seeker · 13/03/2013 23:02

Burlesque for 8 year olds? Fantastic idea. It's just drama and dressing up, isn't it? What kiddie doesn't like doing drama and dressing up?

MechanicalTheatre · 13/03/2013 23:04

You mark my words, seeker, that will be the next thing.

seeker · 13/03/2013 23:05

"Judgements are made when people don't know what they are judging"

Couldn't agree more!

FreudiansSlipper · 13/03/2013 23:07

but we do know what we are judging and that is that pole dancing is connected to a very nasty industry that exploits women

SPBInDisguise · 13/03/2013 23:09

What about when you know what you're judging and still judge?
Thanks for the service seeker :o

MechanicalTheatre · 13/03/2013 23:17

I am judging based on the videos on youtube of the Pole Championships. There was a lot of vag-flashing.

I am also judging based on all the pole classes I looked up having pictures of women in high heels on them.

I am judging on the fact that no men do it.

I am judging on the fact that, whether you like it or not, it originated in strip clubs.

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 13/03/2013 23:17

Baby burlesque with a boudoir photo shoot? It's nothing without the boudoir photo shoot catgirl .

catgirl1976 · 13/03/2013 23:19

Oh yes Grin

And then I can hard sell the parents into "gawjuss" massive canvas prints of their little princess for £££

This idea gets better and betters :)

MechanicalTheatre · 13/03/2013 23:22

Oh but the boys can do it too! Boys can get makeovers too! It's a thing! It definitely is.

nailak · 13/03/2013 23:28

can someone explain why something like zumba which is full of sexy provocative moves is ok, but pole dancing is not?

I remember in gymnastics at circus space doing move around a rope which someone was spinning from the bottom, the moves dont look that different from the moves i have seen in some of the videos tbh
