Pole dancing parties for eight year olds - starting a bit young?

nemoni · 11/03/2013 13:14

So, whilst trawling the internet for a suitable party venue for one of my children I was fairly surprised to see pole dancing parties listed under 'children's party venues in Manchester' on the local netmums page www.netmums.com/manchester/local/view/parties/venues/pole-dance-and-beauty-party

So, 'Caters for adults and children's parties from 8+' - pole dancing parties for eight year olds? Am I missing something??!! Or, am I being unreasonable in my assertions that this is a bit inappropriate and perhaps takes girl's make-over parties to a whole new level? Surprised to see it advertised as a children's party venue, even more surprised to it it on said website.

Over to you fellow mumsnetters...

Yes that has reminded me of SIL's 'pole fitness' phase -the ..er...climax of the course was a poledance in front of everyone's partners

Boak

Greythorne · 13/03/2013 14:07

Oh, googled after posting.

So, the person running this pole fitness is a sex worker and porn star.

A-ha.

Any comments, Betty, as you have been so keen to defend the pole "fitness" scene?

Or PolePerfection? Do you think t right for children's parties to be held in a brothel?

scarletsalt · 13/03/2013 14:08

So 'pole fitness' classes of that nature are pretty common then betty , probably even the norm I would imagine.

My point is that this 'fitness' class took place in a gym, probably the least sexy place I have ever set foot it, and yet ultimately it was still all about being sexy for your man blah blah blah. I would imagine that the type of pole dancing class that you attend is probably quite rare.

And fwiw I have NEVER heard of a bloke going to a pole dancing class. Yes, there are less men going to excercise classes in general, but it is not uncommon to have a significant number of men in these classes.

The only exception to this is zumba which is seen as a 'women's' class - and funnily enough is the only fitness class where it is deemed necessary to gyrate and booty shake your way to fitness. In fact one class I recently went to they used the weightlfiting bars (minus the weights) as 'poles' to do a sexy little Liberty X number to. I cant deny that I do love going to zumba though

HolyMackerel · 13/03/2013 14:09

Pole Perfection website logo - classic silhouette shot of naked strippers.

"Slide show" on the site - many open leg shots in tight/skimpy pants.

Twitter feed and google links - urgh.

But of course pole "fitness" is just "vertical gymnastics" and has nothing to do with the sex industry, oh no Confused

Thankfully I note there is now no mention of parties for kids on her site, but this is grim beyond belief and I can not believe anyone would be naive enough to think pole fitness dancing could ever be a suitable activity for children.

Greythorne · 13/03/2013 14:12

PolePerfection certainly has some brass neck, coming on all innocent and offering to remove the pampering bits of the party package.

How about offering not to organise children's parties if you are openly working as porn worker?

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 13/03/2013 14:12

No Grey - no comment, I have said enough!

Scarlet - that was the only bad one I have experienced to be honest but yes, you would expect a better one held at a gym. Most gyms though, the pole instructors hire the studio and students pay them direct, it is not covered by membership. The gyms should check first to see the quality of the lesson.

We have said loads about men doing classes. Not repeating anything now.

I used to teach aerobics....never had any men at my classes. I hate zumba, tried it, wanted to love it but just couldn't. Prefer pump and combat.

Retiring now from this thread, can't really add anymore.......

MechanicalTheatre · 13/03/2013 14:12

FFS, just googled Nikita Law. Shocked that this person is teaching pole dancing to children.

I have no problem with women who work as prostitutes/strippers themselves. I have a problem with prostitution and stripping though. I would have no problem with a woman who worked as a prostitute working with children - but I do have a problem when she's teaching them pole dancing. It seems to me like she is unable to see what is sexualised and what isn't, what is appropriate for children and what isn't.

Am I really naive that I didn't realised that advertising sexual services on twitter is allowed? It seems really odd to me.

MT, I was totally shocked at that twitter page too. The sexual references and links to cam on A*Work site are surely against Twitter rules.

That page should be 18-rated, like the porn that it actually is.

Does Twitter openly display 18-rated pages then ?

seeker · 13/03/2013 14:39

Retiring, Betty- presumably because you no longer have leg to stand on? Pun intended.

AnyFucker · 13/03/2013 14:40

Pornography: Twitter does remove obscene or pornographic images in user profile photos, header photos, and/or user backgrounds. Report such images by filing a support ticket. We do not regulate content on external (non-Twitter) websites, nor do we regulate Tweets that link to content on external websites, including pornography.

It appears that Twitter supports pornography and the promotion of sexual services. I didn't know that.

AnyFucker · 13/03/2013 14:41

Oh dear, Betty. You sound utterly lovely, but I really wish you would open your eyes to what you are actually promoting when you wax lyrical about how "sporty" pole dancing is.

You can't wipe out that heritage by using the word fitness

That pretty much sums it up for me TBH. I really don't think it will ever get away from that.

I've emailed NetMums.
I wonder what their response will be.

whimsicalmess · 13/03/2013 16:45

LOL yes just slightly too young ....

DesiderataHollow · 13/03/2013 16:46

And I've contacted the Manchester Safeguarding Board. I've no idea whether it will make any difference, but I'd like to think it might.

Good.

Mumof2kiddies · 13/03/2013 22:33

You have googled one person who teaches pole and made a judgment
Yes pole is fitness it's can be sexy if a person makes it that way
I have been doing pole for 3 years I have dropped 2 dress sizes by doing this and my flexibily has improved
It's ok for you little girls to have make up and photo shoots normaly
Strippers can't do what we can they strip and rub a pole we do dancing and moves that I would challenge anyone of you to do
We wear crop tops or cut out tops for grip not to show our bodies
You are all narrow minded people who judge before they know facts in out studio we have aerial silks and hoops as well as pole are you going to say they are for the sex industry aswell !!!!!
