I've been reading the recent bra threads and love it when people are shocked to discover they are actually a 32F and not a 40A.

So, if you have recently had a bra intervention by Sorrel, SC and others, can you answer the following please:

What size were you wearing?
Who fitted you? (Name and shame please)
What size are you now?

CEOHome, that seems to broadly reflect the trend we see. M&S generally are out by 2-3 back sizes too big, and 2-3 cup sizes too small. Sometimes more.

Their "size chart" is here. DO NOT FOLLOW THIS, but...have a look at the measurements for a 46C. They are clueless.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 27/02/2013 14:54

I was 34A and now I am 30C.

All thanks to Sorrel! Grin

CelticPromise · 27/02/2013 14:54

The more of these threads I read the more passionate I get about this! Was looking at lessbounce earlier and they carry a great range of sports bras, service is good etc but their size chart says to add inches! I have a well fitting and supportive Panache sports bra in a 32G, if I'd followed their instructions I'd be sending back a floppy and uncomfortable 36D. MADNESS! I feel an email coming on...

piprabbit · 27/02/2013 14:55

I'm struggling with the way to measure the fullest bit while leaning forward - can someone explain please?
If I lean forward 90 degrees, my torso is parallel with the floor and my boobs are hanging down like a pair of spaniels ears and not anywhere near my body. I think I might be yards round if I measure like this.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 27/02/2013 14:56

And looking at their totally shitty chart I should be a 36AA.

Unbelievable! Why on earth would you add 4 inches anyway? What possibly purpose could that serve?

HazleNutt · 27/02/2013 14:58

stretch and don't forget to show to your "trained bra fitter" SIL what happens when her method is used!

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/02/2013 15:00

piprabbit, it's harder to measure the cup in general but that method generally gets remarkably close to the right cup. Unfortunately measuring in a bra requires that your bra fits well...so doesn't work for most people. Measuring bare but upright results in a far-too-small measurement as a lot of the breast tissue falls under the arms/sags down.

Lueji · 27/02/2013 15:01

I have realised what the best sizes are for me a few years ago, around pregnancy with DS, 8 years ago.

It depends on brand and shape, but it's around a 32C/D or 30D.

I just had to laugh the time I went to a Triumph store and the woman measured me over my clothes (!) and proclaimed I was a something (forgot) A.
I left the store very quickly and have only returned because there aren't many around here that do those sorts of sizes.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 27/02/2013 15:02

Here's a question.

When leaning forward at 90 degrees and measuring around the boobs, should you squash the nips flat? Mine are like Welsh lady hats fairly prominent and I'm sure it would distort the result! Blush

HazleNutt · 27/02/2013 15:03

RedToothBrush I'm afraid it's quite likely VS will be totally horrible.

Champlan · 27/02/2013 15:03

If I am 36 under the bust and 41 around, what would
that make me? Thanks in advance!

daddyorchipsdaddyorchips · 27/02/2013 15:05

I am actually going to buy a tape measure after work specifically so that I can do this. I am so excited.

loser

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/02/2013 15:07

Champlan, start point of a 36DD.
Ariel, don't worry about the nipples. We always advise trying a size or two either side anyway.

Measured as 40E in M&S and 2 local independent shops
Was wearing 42D because 40E was uncomfortable
MN says I'm 36HH yet to find a comfortable nursing bra though

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2013 15:12

HazleNutt VS tried to fit me in a 32C when I got measured in the US. Its the worst fitting I've ever had, and the woman STILL tried to flog it to me!

I'm a 28F.

I'm quite looking forward to them invading here, as if they are as bad as that, there are going to be some comedy posts on MN.

HazleNutt · 27/02/2013 15:13

Oh yes, VS in the US tried to sell me some DD bras, as that's the biggest they had. I'm a G. They kindly recommended I go up a few back sizes. Hmm

Champlan · 27/02/2013 15:14

Thank you Statistically, will go and try some on at the weekend

UniS · 27/02/2013 15:15

36, 42 .

currently wearing 36C - bought on the try on lots at primark till I find one I like, then buy several exactly the same model.

poorbuthappy · 27/02/2013 15:17

UniS shouldn't you be 36f?

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/02/2013 15:18

The 36 is about right - have you tried scooping though as I suspect once you do you may have 4 boobs. You are more like a 36E :)

Scooping:

Put your bra on, then lean forward. Put your right hand round inside the left cup, reaching as far round as you can (I do this infront of a mirror). See all the tissue which creeps over the side of the cup, sticks out under your armpit, or over the backstrap or beside the strap at the back? That's all breast tissue. Grab it, and full it forward (vigorously!) inside the wire. Repeat on the other side.

FrankWippery · 27/02/2013 15:21

I am going to buy myself a tape measure this very afternoon and return with measurements so the awesome bra intervention team can do their whizzy stuff Grin

Lueji · 27/02/2013 15:23

I think the problem is that lots of shops don't stock enough sizes and they try to push what they have.

I prefer to go to shops I know will have sizes in my range instead.

I quite liked Bravissimo when I was in London, they tend to specialise in larger sizes, from D up.

It also depends on the boob shape if a bra fits.
Plunge bras are not good for me because mine are very heavy and a bit saggy, so they "escape" at the front, but usually leave a gap at the top.
I much prefer balconette bras, with good support underneath.
