to be upset at not being able to give our DC my favourite baby name.

I have a favourite boys name and and a favourite girls name that I have loved for ages and always thought that I would name my DC these names.
However, our family name is a difficult one and neither name sounds good with it and potentially the combination could lead to our DC being teased for their name.

I've only just realised how bad they sound together and it's really thrown me.
Out of the blue, we've (I've) have had to start thinking up some new names for our baby due in a couple of months and it's thrown me! I know its not a massive problem in the scheme of things but know that our DC will never have the names I though he or she would have and I'm very sad about this.

Does everyone elses DC have their favourite names? Does it matter? Please feel free to tell me I'm being unreasonable but do it gently :)

Give them the names you favour as middle names?

Children can be teased for anything these days. If you really love those names you could still have them.

Yes you are being ever so slightly unreasonable but you're allowed to be, I wanted to call ds3 a name which dh hated so I couldn't use it.

Could you not use the name you like as a middle name then your dc has the option of using it when they are older if they prefer it?

My Dc have no-where close to my favourite name, for various reasons. They do, however, have their names and I can't imagine them being called anything else.

I was always definitely going to call my DS1 Luke. Then he was born, and he just didn't look like a Luke! I had quite a panic, but it turned out to be easier than expected to re-name him when he was right there in front of me... So don't worry too much. :)

You obviously picked the names before DH (with his pesky surname) came into the equation, that is a little bit U as his opinion should matter as well.There are lots of threads where people are trying to compromise with DHs over names, so not everyone gives their DCs their favourite names.

FWIW, we scrapped our top name when DD was born as it kind of fitted the imaginary baby and we were instead looking at a real little person. Your baby won't necessarily have the hair you imagine, the face or temperament, but will be so much more wonderful than the imaginary baby in every way!

No, DH absolutely insisted on DS1's name...from the moment we found out I was pg. It's an OK name, nothing wrong with it....but it's not the name I would have chosen if I were single. Having said that, it really suits him.

DS2 didn't suit the fabulous name I'd picked out for him. Sad

It's ok, you have something ridiculous like a whole year to 'try out' a baby name till you're not allowed to change it on the birth certificate! Grin

I had names for both my dc but when they were born and I was asked what name for the tags I came out with completely new unthought of names.

It won't take long for whatever you call your DC to become your favourite name when it is associated with your lovely DC. I struggle to imagine what we could call a second DC as there is only one possible name anyone could want to give a baby - DD's name as she is so amazing. I have no idea what my friends have been doing giving their DDs other names. I struggle not to respond to all baby name posts on MN with DD's name, even when it doesn't fit their requirements.

Fwiw, My horrible blunt friend picked up a 'problem' immediately with our choice that we hadn't even realised. Basically the last syllable of the first name matched the first syllable of the last (Think Amber Berbon for example)

Lost sleep for about a day. Picked it anyway. Name's awesome Grin

I couldn't give ds my favourite name, because the whole of the English side of the family, including his father, reacted in horror and I had to accept that maybe they had a better idea than me of how odd it would sound to English ears- and as he was going to grow up in the UK, I reluctantly decided that that was a valid viewpoint. Ds is now old enough to be grateful for this. He still has a foreign name, but for reasons which I am unable to hear, this one is, apparently, acceptable. Oh well

I suppose, if you always liked the name Robert and you married a Mr Blobby, Bobby Blobby just isn't going to be a good name is it?

I loved the name Triston but with my married name it was a mouthful think ch at the beginning

but if you really love the name but don't want to name your child it... get a cat and name it that win win

but seriously.. it's a name and I agree when they are born and you name yout bundle of joy they will suit their name
