to be upset at not being able to give our DC my favourite baby name.

I have a favourite boys name and and a favourite girls name that I have loved for ages and always thought that I would name my DC these names.
However, our family name is a difficult one and neither name sounds good with it and potentially the combination could lead to our DC being teased for their name.

I've only just realised how bad they sound together and it's really thrown me.
Out of the blue, we've (I've) have had to start thinking up some new names for our baby due in a couple of months and it's thrown me! I know its not a massive problem in the scheme of things but know that our DC will never have the names I though he or she would have and I'm very sad about this.

Does everyone elses DC have their favourite names? Does it matter? Please feel free to tell me I'm being unreasonable but do it gently :)

To be honest, I'm always taken aback by the completely mad potential 'reasons' people on Mn naming threads come up with why a child might be teased for their name. Not British, so maybe I'm missing a trick about the extent to which schools use children's initials, but would a Tamara Iris Tate or a Benjamin Johnson really run into so much bother from their playmates?

When I lived in north London, I came across babies and toddlers called Euphemia, Twyla, Fyodor, Ace, and while I recognise that this might be a north London thing, surely people of that generation won't turn a hair at 'unusual' names?

OP, why not give the child your surname, which presuambly works well with the names you like? Give it your husband's name as a middle name or something?

Peevish - not school as such, but plenty of office jobs still operate on a three initial system for references. I worked with an STD, and his letters, references to him in meetings minutes etc all referred to STD. Given he got smirks from (supposed) grownups, I bet he wished his parents had thought about it.

I wanted to use the name Julia, I really like it, but that would mean Dd was the same as a famous actress, so that went out the window Sad

HollyBerryBush · 23/02/2013 23:04

I know three lots of Jennifer Taylor - now think about that one

PuddingWhine · 23/02/2013 23:09

I worked with a Jennifer Taylor years ago. And bad as that is in full, She used to say "call me Jenny!" with a cheerful little smile. ok........

So, it's not as bad as Jenny taylor, or Chris Peacock. Or Ben Dover.

it's just.... a bitof a mouthful is it??

The name I called my son, I was told it sounded like somebody choking on a fishbone. A few other names had already been ruled out at that stage. For more tangible reasons. I like his name!

PuddingWhine · 23/02/2013 23:09

ps, the person who said that only said it when I was considering the name. She wasn't trying to be really rude. I asked her if it worked.

HollyBerryBush · 23/02/2013 23:26

yay! you got the Jenny Taylor!

Now you mention it, Chris Peackock gets about, I know one of those as well

And a Richard Head, who did indeed introduce himself as Dick

Thumbwitch · 23/02/2013 23:33

I know one of them too, Holly. Never goes by the name 'Jenny' Wink.

Not her parents' fault though - it's her married name.

WilsonFrickett · 23/02/2013 23:43

Well no-one can plan for married names, can they? I always used to wish Madonna would marry Maradona when I was wee Grin

HollyBerryBush · 24/02/2013 00:33

And another one - I do indeed know a Molly Coddling. And yes her parents knew what they were doing, they thought it was 'cute' Hmm

WilsonFrickett · 24/02/2013 01:11

Shock and Grin at Molly Coddling.

GroupieGirl · 24/02/2013 09:58

Wilson what about Whoopie Goldberg & Gerard Depardieu?!

I'm pretty sure there's a comedian called Ray Peacock. I don't know whether to hope that's a stage name or not! I also know a Tad Looney!
