To think £40 for duvet cover is not expensive?

I am considering purchasing this:

www.thewhitecompany.com/the-little-white-company/new-arrivals/british-sports-bed-linen/

or this:

www.lauraashley.com/bedlinen/football-applique-bedset/invt/3553424/

(D)H says "Noone in their right mind would spend that on children's bedding".

AIBU - mumsnet jury do I need to look for cheaper?!

I couldn't do second hand bed linen unless I knew it's previous owner...so I definitely wouldn't buy it from eBay.

acunningstunt · 22/02/2013 07:48

I'm just shocked that people iron bed linen! Life's too short! :)

TobyLerone · 22/02/2013 08:37

Hear hear, cunning! I don't even own an iron, and I have 100% cotton bed linen.

countrykitten · 22/02/2013 10:00

£40 is not expensive. People spend a lot of time in bed and imo should definitely get the best quality they can afford. And never, ever that poly cotton stuff.

MiniTheMinx · 22/02/2013 10:59

Polyester is very bad for you and bad for the environment. Polyester is made using oil, an unsustainable resource. It also takes a large amount of energy to produce.

Polyester is not biodegradeable, it fills up land fill.

Some studies have shown that it has gender bending properties and reduces sperm count and lowers progesterone.

BoringSchoolChoiceNickname · 22/02/2013 11:19

Cotton OTOH is normally disastrous for the environment due to huge amounts of water and pesticide use in its growth and manufacture, and bleach/dye used. Its greater expense reflects the higher level of resource use. And every kilo of oil turned into sheets isn't going to be burnt to fry the planet of course.

I swear by cotton sheets myself, but they're not necessarily a greener choice.

BoringSchoolChoiceNickname · 22/02/2013 11:22

(And ironing and tumble drying your king sized cotton sheets is the dodgiest choice of all of course - I'm not a crumple-sheeted slob, I'm just environmentally conscious Grin)

IneedAsockamnesty · 22/02/2013 12:29

£40 is expensive for something that's over priced. If you can get better quality at a much lower price elsewhere, then that makes the item expensive.

If it was the same price or lower than simmerler items elsewhere then it wouldn't be expensive.

HappyAsEyeAm · 22/02/2013 12:36

I would spend that, but DS1's bedding is still looking good, and I don't need to replace it. But if I did, I would be happy to buy it from Laura Ashley or the White Company. I like the JoJo range of bedding for children too. And John Lewis. And Designers Guild.

DS1's bedding is from Dunelm. He has a dinosaurs print one (I don't think they do it anymore) and a city scene one, and they were £7.99 each to include a pillowcase. They're lovely quality, and habven't faded at all. Really nice, even 2 1/2 years on and they've each been washed at least once a week in that time.

Bedding for our bed is from Laura Ashley and I am 100% happy with the quality of that too.

Have you tried TKMaxx?

NuclearStandoff · 22/02/2013 14:05

I now buy organic cotton duvet covers from Toast which are slightly more eco-friendly (although you can't avoid the heavy water use). They make White Company look cheap - but the quality is really good (particularly like the cosy brushed cotton at this time of year) and I expect them to last for at least 10 years, which also helps with the eco-friendly thing.

bloggingvirgin · 22/02/2013 14:09

It is fairly expensive but not outrageous for 100% cotton.

However if it is for a single bed you would get the same thing cheaper in John Lewis.

I was very surrprised at the good quality of some ARGOS 100% Egyptian cotton duvets covers I bought- comparible to JL IMO, and also WILKOS now do a 400 thread count pure cotton bedding range..

Francagoestohollywood · 22/02/2013 14:21

I don't think it's that expensive, no. As usual, how much expensive a thing is is determined by your budget and tastes.

Francagoestohollywood · 22/02/2013 14:23

Have you checked zara home kids? Imo they have lovely duvet covers

LookatMeeeeeee · 22/02/2013 14:26

I was about to say that £40 was a good price - but I was thinking that it was for a double bed!

I would always rather pay a bit more for something good quality that I think will last. That doesn't mean that I don't think it is expensive, just that sometimes expensive things are worth it. I reckon bed linen is something that it's worth paying a bit more for.
But I think I would baulk a little at the price of the one above for a child - it is £40 for just the duvet cover, then an extra £13 for the pillow case, then you'll presumably have to buy a sheet as well, so you're probably actually looking at over £60. i think that's expensive in anyone's book, and I'd probably only consider it if my child had chosen it to be a present for their birthday or Christmas or something. If it was just that they needed new bedding, then I'd get them something a bit cheaper.
My DD has one Cath Kidston expensive set that her grandparents bought her for christmas, and one plain set that I bought her that was about half the price, equally good quality but without the cute pattern.

daisydoodoo · 22/02/2013 14:34

they will last for ages.
My boys have laura ashley ones that are coming up for 10 years old now and still going strong. funnily enough they are pplique sports ones too.

dd1 has a 15-20 year old maybe even more laura ashley duvet cover that she loves, it has a girl on it with handbags and shoes around, that was my sisters when she was younger, my sister is now 32 so im guessing its nearer 20 years old than 15.

i always buy 100% cotton bedding.

NotSoNervous · 22/02/2013 16:27

I can't see any of the links but I don't think £40 is to bad

pigletmania · 22/02/2013 16:32

Yabvu that is a lot to pay for a duvet cover let alone a chids duvet cover

pigletmania · 22/02/2013 16:35

Argos or Home bargains all the way for kids

forevergreek · 22/02/2013 20:41

Piglet- why not for kids? I wouldn't get my children something on a lower level than I would get myself

Argos to me then Argos for them, but If it is Harrods for me it would be Harrods for them too. They aren't inferior

DrRanj · 22/02/2013 20:46

Perhaps because kids tend to poo/wee/spill things? I remember spilling a whole bottle of my mum's red nail varnish over my duvet cover when I was little!

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2013 20:48

Children deserve nice bed linen too. Smile

IfNotNowThenWhen · 22/02/2013 20:52

Good bedding is a must. I only use high thread count cotton. I don't iron it either, as it makes no difference after one night on the bed.
YANBU, but shop around. I usually get linens from factory shops etc, where I can get a good deal.

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2013 20:59

I think once you have had high thread count cotton there's no going back. Grin If it wasn't for that hotel I would still be buying the cheaper stuff.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 22/02/2013 21:01

Once you have had 400 thread count there is no going back!

MiniTheMinx · 22/02/2013 21:03

I remember having a sleep over at a friends house when I was a child. The pillows were those horrid hollow fibre things and the bedding this shiny polyester stuff. You couldn't move because of the static and I felt like my head was boiling. It was worse than torture.
