To think £40 for duvet cover is not expensive?

I am considering purchasing this:

www.thewhitecompany.com/the-little-white-company/new-arrivals/british-sports-bed-linen/

or this:

www.lauraashley.com/bedlinen/football-applique-bedset/invt/3553424/

(D)H says "Noone in their right mind would spend that on children's bedding".

AIBU - mumsnet jury do I need to look for cheaper?!

I don't think they are expensive, you get what you pay for with bedding. I buy Laura Ashley and one set we use regularly has been going for around 12 years, it's lovely and soft.

The children in this house demand they have the same quality and both can tell the difference between cotton and polycotton (which is the work of the devil !)

IneedAsockamnesty · 21/02/2013 19:52

More affordable options don't always mean poly cotton.

DialsMavis · 21/02/2013 19:52

I prefer the WC one, but as other have said how long are you expecting him to like it before he grows out of the design? Not worth it lasting years and years if he will hate it in 3 years surely?

It would be too much for me to spend because I am a pauper... It's Ikea, EBay or TKMax for me. But if you can afford it then why not? Actually you would get a good resale value on Ebay for the WC one when you were finished with it, tell DH that. I couldn't believe how much they were 2nd hand.

Also, aren't people on here always complaining WC quality has gone down hill?

AmberSocks · 21/02/2013 19:53

we only have one set of bedding each,i got the 3 kids theirs from king of cotton for that much each, ours is from white company which cost £££££.it is worth it though its lovely ad soft and drapey.its not too much if you can afford it.

TrinityRhino · 21/02/2013 19:53

not a chance I would spend that

b and m or asda all the way

I couldn't bear to waste that much on bedding

TrinityRhino · 21/02/2013 19:54

bear? bare?

arrrggghhhhhh

DialsMavis · 21/02/2013 19:57

X post- I am sure he will like it now... But my 10 year old most definitely would not, not for the last year or 2.

SquinkiesRule · 21/02/2013 19:59

I quite like the ones from here.

I've never paid more than £20 or so for my bed and a tenner for the kids. They all seem to last for years.

cathers · 21/02/2013 20:00

I bought a single duvet from the white company 8 years ago for Ds1. It is still in daily use on ds 2 bed and looks like new. In terms of cost per use, it was worth every penny and a lot more cost effective than cheaper sets which have been replaced.

Corygal · 21/02/2013 20:02

Buy pure white in TK - it's all over 200 thread count and pure cotton, at slightly more than asda prices. Eg 13 quid duvet cover, a fiver fer yer pillowcases, a tenner for two sheets.

If you're in luck they have Frette (the linen that God puts the clouds in for his duvet cover, and scuttles off for an early night) for about 50 quid.

I love bed linen and to my horror the TK stuff has lasted so well - Lulu Guinness, Frette - that I genuinely can't justify buying any more for years.

fossil971 · 21/02/2013 20:04

I wouldn't pay that much for childrens' bedding because they go off it too soon and TBH they don't really notice the quality and if they are into say football, would be just as happy with a Man Utd themed set from Argos.

We have a superkingsize duvet and the covers for that are never cheap, I think £50 is good going for a set unless you get lucky in a sale.

fossil971 · 21/02/2013 20:05

x posted with Cathers! maybe she has a point!

BackforGood · 21/02/2013 20:07

I do think it's a really valid point, that what will suit an 8 yr old, certainly isn't going to be popular with a 12 yr old, or a 16 yr old. Ultimately, if you're a bit short of money, then they sleep under whatever you give them, but, if you're not, you'll be wanting to replace their duvet covers as they grow, so there's no point in paying the extra "because it will last", when your ds won't be liking it as he matures.

Pricklypickup · 21/02/2013 20:19

The problem with DH is that he doesn't like wastage (I suppose some would say this isn't a problem) so until something is worn out it doesn't need replacing.

Therefore maybe I'm setting my ds up for a battle if he wants to upgrade the design when a teenager if his bedding still looks good as new.

DH has asked why I'm replacing his bedding as it is, I just think cute dinosaurs are no longer cutting it with ds. But ds is always quiet so hasn't commented as such, other than to "casually" ask when he'll get his bedroom redecorated.

TWC used to do the most adorable children's bedlinen, ungendered, in stripes or gingham in loads of different colours that you could mix and match. It was gorgeous, worth having lots of DC for that alone Wink I'm quite sad to see they now gender their website and it's all a bit fairies or football!

FamiliesShareGerms · 21/02/2013 20:35

The WC one is gorgeous in the flesh - I nearly bought it for DS at the weekend, and if yours is sports mad I reckon you'll get a good few years out of it.

I did, however, baulk at paying £50 for the cricket cable knit cushion cover that is part of the same range.

drjohnsonscat · 21/02/2013 20:45

I wish I could find it now but Achica this week had a duvet and pillow set at £700 reduced from £999. It was also beyond hideous.

Picturesinthefirelight · 21/02/2013 20:51

I bought a lovely 100% cotton set for ds from John Lewis Children's range for £35 but struggled for dd. gets was from the adult range but in single and was around £45.

NuclearStandoff · 21/02/2013 20:59

I bought White Company duvet covers for my dc when they were small and they have lasted over 10 years. Very good quality (although we do eventually lose the buttons).

However, if you want it to last a while your ds may think the design is a bit babyish when they get a bit older.

But if you like it and can afford it I don't see a problem with it.

BOF · 21/02/2013 21:00

I think I would pay almost anything for a Terry Wogan's Cock bed linen set.

Bogeyface · 21/02/2013 21:03

I wouldnt spend that much on a childs bedding simply because they would grow out of it before it wore out and then what do you do? As you said, when he is 15 the bedding will still be going strong but I rather think that he will be well past the design!

I would spend decent money on adult bedding though, or for an older teen who wanted something neutral, the best you can afford is the best way to go with it I find.

Bogeyface · 21/02/2013 21:04

Also, I assume you are not just buying one, but 2 sets? So £80 is a hell of a lot!

TobyLerone · 21/02/2013 21:04

Why would you buy 2?

Bogeyface · 21/02/2013 21:06

Well if she is replacing his current sets then presumably she will need a wash and a wear?

WOW at the price of the comforter, I assume that is the £165 one?

DialsMavis · 21/02/2013 21:06

BOF: yes! I feel an Etsy shop coming on
