To think £40 for duvet cover is not expensive?

I am considering purchasing this:

www.thewhitecompany.com/the-little-white-company/new-arrivals/british-sports-bed-linen/

or this:

www.lauraashley.com/bedlinen/football-applique-bedset/invt/3553424/

(D)H says "Noone in their right mind would spend that on children's bedding".

AIBU - mumsnet jury do I need to look for cheaper?!

YABU to think that £40 for bedlinen is not expensive.

YANBU to be thinking of buying it, your money your choice.

Pigsmummy · 21/02/2013 19:15

I wouldn't spend that much, I fell in love with some stunning bedding, reduced from about £150 to about £50 in house of Fraser, hubbie pointed out that I would just be battling with the cat for it! I spend about £20 on a double set and £10-15 on children single set. Peppa pig set is in use and working out super.

IneedAsockamnesty · 21/02/2013 19:15

I wouldn't pay that for kids bedding especially from that company because IMO its over priced tat and does not last well.

I pay about £20 for 100% cotton single bed size bedding sets

IneedAsockamnesty · 21/02/2013 19:16

Does mumsnet have a discount code for that shop? Could have sworn I've seen one somewhere on here

silverfrog · 21/02/2013 19:20

I owuldn't expect my dc to sleep in anythign i wouldn't sleep in.

so full cotton, with decent thread count are a minimum. and then after that they/I can choose pattern/design.

there is no way I'd use polycotton sheets/duvet cover, so I wouldn't buy it for anyone else. and sadly decent cotton comes at a price.

Ghostsgowoooh · 21/02/2013 19:21

I get my duvet covers from Asda myself. Spend between 6 and 15 quid. Job done.

They last a long time in this house. They have to. Can't afford fancy shit

AnnaRack · 21/02/2013 19:21

Should be high quality and long lasting at that prixe. Hope you get what you pay for. I second tkmaxx suggestion though, good quality and xeaper.

FlouncingMintyy · 21/02/2013 19:22

My dc have 100% cotton bed linen. But its so long since I bought a set that I can't remember how much it cost!

MadameCastafiore · 21/02/2013 19:23

God no, John Lewis plain dye bed linen is the way forward for kids beds. Dd has pip studio and is a bloody nightmare to iron whereas DS's cheapo John Lewis plain dye is bloody brilliant!

CloudsAndTrees · 21/02/2013 19:24

It's not expensive for something that's decent quality.

You could get cheaper, but it won't stay nice for more than a few washes.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 21/02/2013 19:25

I think for kids bedding £20- £25 is enough but one of my duvet cover cost £110 ( from John Lewis) and I've had it 10 years. It still feels and looks lovely. I'm sure it will last another 20 years at least.

Pricklypickup · 21/02/2013 19:26

See what DH doesn't realise (because he wasn't interested enough last time to ask for the receipt when I came home - I foolishly asked his opinion on these two hence why he saw the price) was this was how much I paid last time Blush

How old is your son anyway? Because lovely though TWC one is, by the time he's 5 or 6, he's going to prefer a hideous poly-cotton Ben-10 monstrosity, or a football team duvet cover.

I've just managed to get my 11 year old into plain jersey cotton duvet covers after years of Thomas, followed by Arsenal, interspersed with Bugs Bunny.

MoominmammasHandbag · 21/02/2013 19:32

If you think of it in terms of your kids spending a third of their lives in bed, the duvet cover being the most striking item in any room decorating scheme and the fact that a decent quality duvet cover will last for years, then I don't think it is particularly expensive.
I treated DD to a gorgeous Clarrissa Hulse cover for her recent room redecoration. On the other hand DS2's favourite is an ancient Lion King one that must be about 15 years old. He loves it because it has been washed to velvety softness.

lljkk · 21/02/2013 19:32

I spend £6 in a charity shop for a duvet cover that will (ime) last 20+ yrs. So £40 would be a bit of a shock.

I wouldn't, but only because it's a slightly twee little-boy design he will probably grow out of (he is 6+ now, have I understood that right?). I'd happily spend that on something plainer.

sleepingsatellite18 · 21/02/2013 19:39

Am I the only one who doesn't like the design!?!!! (The White Company one)
It's very boring

It doesn't look like it's worth £40.....but like others have said the quality may be worth it.

I would not spend £40 on a bed cover. We've got cute ones from Ikea, can't remember the price but I'm sure it was under £10

If you can afford it then go for it, but I don't think it's very spectacular for £40!

Pricklypickup · 21/02/2013 19:40

Oh are you lot telling me that my little boy (who's 8 going on 16) is not going to like these designs Sad.

He will choose the design I was just compiling a short list of what I like for him to choose from.

It's lovely and if you can afford it and like it, then buy it. But I would bear in mind how old your DS is.
TWC bedding we have for our bed is still in pristine condition, and is about 6/7 years old. We have 2 sets which are alternated every week so have had 3ish years out of each set. The print is really lovely on the one you have picked but i'm guessing as you are asking IYBU then you want to get your moneys worth. Your DS might outgrow it before it's tatty.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 21/02/2013 19:42

Whether something is expensive is relative, so if you can afford it, I'd definitely go for it. My 6 yr old DS has both WC and LA and both are good quality, feel nice and are long lasting.

bedmonster · 21/02/2013 19:44

Sorry, xpost. It is a sweet print but my DD is 8 and has asked for more 'grown up' as one of her birthday presents this year so I think that's swayed my judgement slightly. Smile

Megsdaughter · 21/02/2013 19:45

Spent more than that. But then only buy white cotton.
this was my buy at Christmas

Love it and being white cotton I can hot wash with vanish white and it comes up looking like new.

I bought some ten years ago. The new ones were to replace them.
The old ones are still ok as spares.

Angelfootprints · 21/02/2013 19:46

No, I think its fine. Its something you will use everyday (except wash days of course) and will last a good few years.
