Anyone else got/had this?

On Dec 18th (I know this as it was the meet-up!) I had a razor blade throat and runny nose, this cold and (mild) cough lasted three weeks. One day off when I thought oh good I'm better, then last weekend terrible boilings and freezings and now the COUGH FROM HELL, dry and going on all day and all night. Ribs painful.

Anyone?

I have some pholcodeine from the pharmacist, I'll give that a go next.

Bastard cough

TAKE PIRITON!!!!

I only woke up because ds was banging on the back door to be let in after school Grin God, I feel spaced out but better for the sleep! Will take some more tonight.

amillionyears · 30/01/2013 17:10

I am pretty sure I heard somewhere, possibly a NHS advert? to go to a doctor if a cough has lasted longer than 3 weeks.

amillionyears · 30/01/2013 17:11

There is a link but not going to send it.

NaturalBaby · 30/01/2013 17:13

I had it a couple of years ago when pregnant so couldn't take anything, and ended up with bruised ribs from the coughing: agony.

Must try vicks on feet!

Hullygully · 30/01/2013 17:19

I asked the pharmacist and she said she couldn't recommend it because it was for allergies.

I said, ok, but off the record will it work? And she said no guarantees.

If the pholcodeine doesn't work tonight I'll get it tomoz.

I know that one, amillion, this is a funny old different type but thank you.

Hmm, when I had flu symptoms, followed by a cough and chest pain it was acute pneumonia.
But my neighbour had very similar symptoms and turned out he had flu + whooping cough.
I'd get it checked out personally.
You could phone NHS Direct, I did just to find out what OTC drugs I could take and they sent the ambulance. which is how I found out it was pneumonia.

JustAHolyFool · 30/01/2013 17:31

Yup, same here. Started on December 19th and I think, THINK, it's actually gone today. It started off mucusy then went really dry. When I breathed in deeply though, you could hear the mucus in my throat. Yesterday, I had the most awful coughing fit where I couldn't stop for about 10 minutes, thought I was going to die.

Touch wood, it seems to have gone today.

Pigsmummy · 30/01/2013 17:34

A cough that lasts a few weeks should get checked out, I left mine 6 weeks and ended up off work for 8 weeks with pneumonia and pleurisy, doc said that I had gone sooner i might have prevented having to be off for so long and it becoming so serious. The only plus was that I lost 2 stone in a month even whilst taking steroids!

Hullygully · 30/01/2013 17:37

The pharmacist didn't think I needed the doc, I'm not just refusing to go. I'll go in a few days if it's still like this.

Hully the asthma nurse recommended Piriton for ds's cough when it was bad - it'll be fine, just pretend you have hayfever as well Wink

I slept last night on the sofa propped up with pillows and another dose of Pirition from 11.30 - 4.30, got up and had some cough medicine and went back until 6.30am.

I feel vaguely human although my ribs ache like mad Sad

Get some Piriton Hully!

hackmum · 31/01/2013 08:58

Am strangely relieved to find this. I developed a cold on December 14 (date noted because I hardly ever get colds), it hung around for a couple of weeks making me feel shit, and then turned into a cough, which is still with me at the end of January. Feel tired and run down the whole time.

Hullygully · 31/01/2013 09:11

Slept better with half a bottle of pholcodeine down my neck. Will get piriton today. Or a morphine drip.

yy hackmum, no energy, can't even drink much. Unheard of.

Oh and Vicks - I covered myself in it last night and it got rid of the wheeze!

2madboys · 31/01/2013 09:19

If you've had a cough for a while it may be worth getting checked for asthma. I developed asthma at the age of 35 after the worlds mildest chest infection left me coughing for 3 months. I never knew you could develop it in later life and I'm possibly the least allergic person I know so was really surprised. Apart from occasional blips though, it's really well under control and rarely causes me any problems.

ChippingInLovesMN · 31/01/2013 09:22

Hully - sorry to hear it matey... hope they get you fixed up soon. Be grateful you aren't a horse! Grin

Pagwatch · 31/01/2013 09:24

Poor Hully!

I have had a cough for weeks and weeks. I have to see the Doctor every two weeks but it isn't going away. It isn't keeping me awake though, that must be horrible and exhausting.
Nothing diminishes it and I have a constant ache in my chest. It's a fuck of a thing.
I hope you feel better soon lovely. I am cantankerous and not nice to be around. Sleeping whenever I can helps.

We should never have snogged. I knew it was unwise.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/01/2013 09:36

If there is any phlegm or rattliness at all, I've found the wheezing breathing exercises on this site really useful. They're really uncomfortable (and a bit disgusting) to do but they do get things shifting without cracking your ribs.

Also, drink loads of water - it thins it all out and makes it easier to shift.

Sorelip · 31/01/2013 09:37

I had one for about 3 weeks in November/December. Dry, itchy, and a total bastard. DS had it but recovered within a few days. Anything throat related always gets worse than it should be for me.

I have a cough and cold now. DS got it first, probably from fucking sing and sign. He is fine now.

Hully, I feel your pain, as well as general pain.

Noren · 31/01/2013 09:54

I had a cough that was mainly at night and turned out to be acid reflux!

Coughs are the worst, really.

FunnysInLaJardin · 31/01/2013 10:02

btw cuprofen plus helps me sleep when I have a cough. It's the 12 mg of codine that does it. I am a big fan of codine!

CremeEggThief · 31/01/2013 10:07

I tried the Vicks on the soles of my feet (and all over my chest and back) last night and it definitely helped :).

valiumredhead · 31/01/2013 10:13

Hooray for Vicks! Grin

Colliewollydoodle · 31/01/2013 11:18
