Anyone else got/had this?

On Dec 18th (I know this as it was the meet-up!) I had a razor blade throat and runny nose, this cold and (mild) cough lasted three weeks. One day off when I thought oh good I'm better, then last weekend terrible boilings and freezings and now the COUGH FROM HELL, dry and going on all day and all night. Ribs painful.

Anyone?

Oh dear God, last night was dire - every time I tried to sleep my throat made a weird rattling noise that kept me awake. I feel wrecked today Sad

Sounds like you were the same Hully Brew

LIZS · 30/01/2013 09:52

I had similar this time last year with coughing that went on for months, was worse with fire smoke , cold air etc. I have been diagnosed with narrowing of small airways and am now being treated for asthma.

Hoofhearted69 · 30/01/2013 09:54

If you have back pain and can't sleep lying down it sounds like pleurisy, and /or lower lobe pneumonia, which is a bastard ( not sure what they call it these days, might be sommat else ) and often you can't take a deep breath in all the way without passing out... don't be fobbed off at your gps, at least get a chest film done and some decent pain relief.. Antihistamines can be good for drying up drippy tickles but don't take anything until you speak to your doc.

valiumredhead · 30/01/2013 09:55

Oh yes, Piriton, I will take some of that...

PickledInAPearTree · 30/01/2013 09:56

I've just got rid of this utter bastard. On and off for three weeks up all night.

Couldn't take anything as pregnant, sleeping slightly propped up helped.

The dr might be able to give you something hard core I couldn't have?

I would have taken a nytol I think if I could to get a bit of sleep.

Don't think it's whooping I had the vaccine a while back.

valiumredhead · 30/01/2013 10:01

I'm going to get dh to get me some Night Nurse on the way home from work, if I don't sleep tonight I'll go nuts, I'm so tired!

valiumredhead · 30/01/2013 10:02

I had whooping cough vaccine when I was a baby - I's still be covered wouldn't I? 42 years ago.

Hullygully · 30/01/2013 10:02

I don't have asthma or a drip or any mucus, just this bastard cough.

I'll try the pharmacist for something hardcore later.

Hully..ds2 had this before Xmas.
I second the piriton advice.
Also feet a humidifier in your bedroom at night.
It really idea help.
Also, raise the head if your bed if you can.

LIZS · 30/01/2013 10:09

but that's what I mean - the virus triggered the cough and aggravated what may have been an underlying issue. No wheezing as is typical of asthma , more a dry but racking and persistent cough.

Colliewollydoodle · 30/01/2013 10:28

ME TOO! Hard dry cough, nearly throw up when I really get going, not to mention the underwear I'm getting through. Thought I'd share ! Blush

Hullygully · 30/01/2013 10:30

I have almost embraced the Tenas...

Piriton might try, I've only had it during the day and it knocked me out so might work

FunnysInLaJardin · 30/01/2013 10:35

Grin @ tena. I find panty liners indispensible during the winter months.........my cold flu kit includes pholcodine, panty liners, nurofen plus and a box of tissues. Fluid leaking from mosts orrifices

CremeEggThief · 30/01/2013 10:36

In bed with what I'm calling the flu, but cannot stop coughing :(. I was even sick straight after breakfast this morning, but I think it was just down to the sheer anount of coughing. I haven't felt this poorly for years...

valiumredhead · 30/01/2013 12:47

I've just taken some Piriton - will report back after a nap!

theressomethingaboutmarie · 30/01/2013 12:59

Try Covonia Night Time - it's excellent. Took DD (5) to doc yesterday due to persistent cough and she has been given an inhaler which should help.

Arithmeticulous · 30/01/2013 13:09

I have this. It's crap. I wouldn't mind so much if I hadn't already had the ache flu-lite© thing over Christmas and a razor blade throat before and after Christmas. I feel like every muscle is aching and breathing is like the pain you get when you run for a bus in winter.

Elvis I was going to suggest whooping cough too. I had it last year and coughed horribly for SIX months. It took 4 months and umpteen visits to the Dr to get diagnosed (blood test). My chest was clear (classic in whooping cough), and I have asthma, increased inhalers, 2 courses of steroids etc all with no effect. I eventually went on a website and looked at the symptoms, and listened to the cough, and realised that is what it was, so went back to Drs and got a blood test which confirmed it was whooping cough. I had been vaccinated as a child, but either it had never worked or it had worn off.
Collywollydoodle - your description is exactly what I had Grin Sad

goldenlula · 30/01/2013 13:19

Dh has had this since Christmas, although his cough is more chesty and affecting his voice making him very husky. He went to the dr's last week (which is a rare thing for him) and he has had to have a chest X-ray, which after a recall with no explanation, turned out fine. He is havin a camera put down his throat next week but reading this makes me think it is just all to do with the virus.

thegreylady · 30/01/2013 13:21

I'd go to the doc it sounds as if it may be a chest infection. The last time I ignored one for too long it was pneumonia!
Its the feverishness that makes me think infection.Take care Hully :)

DumSpiroSpero · 30/01/2013 15:51

Sorry you've have another crappy night. My cough was lots better after the steroids but they tend to cause insomnia and since I'm not a great sleeper anyway I din't go off until nearly 3am (6.30am start this morning).

Still feel about 100 x better than I did yesterday though.

Definitely get it checked out if you think it might me whooping cough - I had it as a child - 8 weeks off school, collapsed lung, physio and asthma as an ongoing reminder - you really need to know if do have it.

Will make a mental note to try Covonia Night Time next time I get the lurge - although I usually have it in hot water with lemon and honey and add a hefty shot of whisky at bedtime, which has much the same effect! Grin

Hope you're on the mend soon.

heylottie · 30/01/2013 16:02

Rub Vicks on the soles of your feet before you go to bed.
It works like a charm on DD (3) so it might work for an adult! I admit I havent tried it myself, but it stops a toddlers cough in its tracks

I do not know why. It is voodoo.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/01/2013 16:02

Pulmo Bailey!

Tastes like a glass of smoke stirred with shit on a stick but it does supress the cough well enough for a good nights sleep.
