to have to ask permission from guests to not have turkey at Christmas

DH seems to think that if you were to host Christmas lunch for family and were planning on not having turkey (so serving eg. rib of beef instead) then you should inform the guests and ask if that's OK.
I think he's mad but he thinks it would be polite to ask as turkey would be "expected"
Would anyone else feel the need to ask?

I don't know, i've never tried it. I tend to go for the 'traditional' option for work christmas meal but i've never seen bread sauce on the menu

Grin bread sauce can be lovely or it can be hideous!
The stuff out of packets is pretty rank, but occasionally I've had a lovely one. When in doubt I'll put a teaspoon on my plate - try it to see if it passes the taste test and if its a yes - then load it on. I reckon the best bits are the trimmings - love stuffing, love gravy, love pigs in blankets, love cranberry sauce - in fact the turkey is pretty low on the list but the traditionalist in me likes to have a slice of it somewhere on the plate at some point over the festive period!

I love bread sauce event the packets which is what I usually use, husband dislikes it. For me it's a chicken accompaniment not turkey. Turkey is cranberry sauce (not jelly, must have bits in) sausage meat, chipolata sausages wrapped in streaky bacon and gravy

Bread Sauce:

2/3 pint milk
One onion studded with cloves
One orange quarter
bring to the boil and leave to stand until the milk cools
blade of mace
Strain

Good whack of butter
Tbs of plain flour
Make a nice wettishs, soothing roux

Add the milk but let it stay not to thick
Add about three slices of whizzed white bread crumbs
You might want to add a slug of cream - depends on consistency
Salt and pepper to season

I find making it quite therapeutic. This variety cannot be purchased and I have never know anyone not to like it.

If you did tell your guests and they were disappointed, they could do what I'm now doing- turkey et al for Sunday dinner this weekend, with the beef wellington as the main event on the day Xmas Grin

I appreciate what people have said about how the beef is cooked, but I find with the beef wellington I do, if you do a big fillet, the end bits are fairly well-done (for the kids), the next few slices are medium (for Dh and my uncle) and the middle bits are rare (yum, for dad and I!)

I have never made bread sauce, as it was never something I remember having as a child; neither my mother nor GM served it. Frankly there is usually more than enough on our plates so I don't think anyone misses it! But I have had it a few times at restaurants and I have enjoyed it, so I might give it a whirl this year. How many cloves do I put in the onion, married?

theplodder · 19/12/2012 05:16

Turkey can be nice if it is moist.

RubyGates · 19/12/2012 08:23

We're off to the ILs and we're taking them a Capon.
We all, with the exception of FIL, find turkey distinctly underwhelming. FIL gets his turkey fix (as he is an import from over the Pond) for his hybrid birthday/thanksgiving fix meaning we never, ever have to eat it.

I don't really understand why turkey is so popular. so I'd need warning if it was on the menu Smile

About 8 fellatio. You don't need a big onion.

FellatioNelson · 19/12/2012 08:37

thanks.

theplodder · 19/12/2012 08:59

I like a nice moist bird.

whois · 19/12/2012 09:54

I would tell people in advance but I certainly wouldn't ask!

WhenAChildIsBawnTigga · 19/12/2012 10:33

You don't need to ask permission, just tell them. I would like to know prior to arriving that it would be beef not turkey if I were one of your guests. Not that I'd be bothered,I'd just like to know.
