Wonder how long it took for the Autistic insults to come

I was reading the DM coverage of the shootings, of course it is very sad and I hope tat the gunman is punished severly, it did not take long for the Autistic insults to come. I read in te same paragraph monster and Autistic, great stereotyping. The DM mentions that he had Autism a lot of times, as if every person with Autism is dangerous and a timebomb waiting to explode. The responses were just as hurtful

Link?

Witchety · 15/12/2012 09:25

I've not read anything about autism relating to the shootings?

Either way, the shooter was a monster tho

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 15/12/2012 09:25

Erm the gunmen is dead so doubt he can be punished...

ImAlpharius · 15/12/2012 09:27

I've not seen anything about autism.

I have read that he was wearing balck. That seems to be mentioned a lot,as if it explains everything.

ChocHobNob · 15/12/2012 09:27

The gunman won't be punished any further, he shot himself.

As of about 30 mins ago I saw no negative comments focusing on his autism, just the fact being stated that he was autistic. I may not have seen any recent comments though.

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 09:28

I just feel really sad for dd and her future if this is how she will be percieved. She goes to an autistic school thank goodness, I dread the bullying she might get in a MS school as a result of negative stereotypes about Autism

Oh the DM. Why am I not surprised.

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 15/12/2012 09:28

sky news is reporting that he was an honor roll student and 'possibly had a personality disorder'. No mention of autism.

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 09:28

Oh sorry yes typing in haste I will link hang on

Witchety · 15/12/2012 09:29

Cos one murderer out of many happens to be autistic then you fear for you daughter?

MrsMushroom · 15/12/2012 09:29

I have never once put Autism in the same hole as Psychotic. This person was Autistic but he was also mentally ill in another way.

I think most people understand the difference.

MrsMushroom · 15/12/2012 09:30

Witchety no....she fears that people will label her DD BECAUSE she is Autistic...they will think she's violent.

Pagwatch · 15/12/2012 09:35

They have been mentions of his apparent autism on the sky coverage.

Yes, in an understandable effort to figure out what could possibly cause someone to do this unfortunately more negative misconceptions about autism are going to be aired.
But hopefully most reasonable people will remain sensible in recognising that the acts of one person do not define a group.
And, in spite of some of the thick views occasionally aired on here, I hope think most people are fairly sensible.

HollyBerryBush · 15/12/2012 09:37

There was some incredibly bad reporting in the DM this morning - feck knows where their journalists learned their trade, basic factual information is often wrong.

Quote from the brother: He told a friend he believed his mentally disabled brother did it. Adam is believed to be autistic.

Actually, the DM must have cleaned up the article - there were some quite disparaging austic comments within the article at 5am.

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 15/12/2012 09:37

There has been no confirmation that he is autistic.
another DM link

Say the brother has claimed he has autistic behaviour but the aunt has that's not true.

AllSnowballsAndNoKnickers · 15/12/2012 09:38

What Witchety said. You are being overly dramatic OP and maybe just a little bit removed from reality.

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 15/12/2012 09:38

They have been mentions of his apparent autism on the sky coverage.

Sorry I am on the sky news app and there is no mention. There may be on the news.

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 09:39

On the opening sentence autistic and monster on the same line. Than the lock em away mentality of Autistic people from DM readers

OP posts:
DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 15/12/2012 09:45

I read in te same paragraph monster and Autistic, great stereotyping.

Er... but he was a monster. The same paragraph also mentions he was a loner and a young man... it is creating a picture of who he was.

Any foul comments by DM readers are to be expected though - they are not known for their tolerance.

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 09:47

I guess I am a bit U and a tad over sensitive Smile

Trying to be as nice as possible op.

Would you feel the same if they said 'dark haired monster', would you feel that implied all dark haired people are monsters?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 15/12/2012 09:51

What's your understanding of 'psychotic' MrsMushroom? The vast majority of people with psychosis (which covers a wide range of conditions) aren't dangerous either.

BTW, I can heartily recommend the DM kitten block for those who use firefox Smile
