Wonder how long it took for the Autistic insults to come

I was reading the DM coverage of the shootings, of course it is very sad and I hope tat the gunman is punished severly, it did not take long for the Autistic insults to come. I read in te same paragraph monster and Autistic, great stereotyping. The DM mentions that he had Autism a lot of times, as if every person with Autism is dangerous and a timebomb waiting to explode. The responses were just as hurtful

I fucking Hate That Book.
My Head said that it reminded her of my DS. I will never forgive her.

TheNebulousBoojum · 15/12/2012 12:09

That's exactly the sort of ignorant, popularist and baseless connection that the waffling intelligensia of MN will come out with to show that they are not DM readers, oh no.
Thet will base their random judgements on a proper book.
I see arseholes everywhere.

Dawndonna · 15/12/2012 12:09

I don't think that is particularly helpful gotthemoon

KittyFane1 · 15/12/2012 12:10

"We need to talk about Kevin" does not say what is wrong with Kevin. It can be interpreted in a million ways. Autism is one interpretation and there are many others.

FanjoTimeMammariesAndWine · 15/12/2012 12:10

Nebulous I would have said 'oh really? Well you remind me of a massive c*nt'

Dawndonna · 15/12/2012 12:11

"We need to talk about Kevin" isn't relevant to this discussion.

KittyFane1 · 15/12/2012 12:12

TheNebulous : there are Arseholes everywhere
Yes. There are. They will never change either.

FanjoTimeMammariesAndWine · 15/12/2012 12:12

Autism isn't one impression. What part of autism makes people kill others.

Err no part

FanjoTimeMammariesAndWine · 15/12/2012 12:12

One interpretation I mean

Pantomimedam · 15/12/2012 12:14

Nebulous, good grief. I'm so sorry you had to come up against such a thick headteacher.

KittyFane1 · 15/12/2012 12:15

Fanjo When this book has been discussed and articles written about it, 'Autism' was thrown into the mix.

FanjoTimeMammariesAndWine · 15/12/2012 12:16

Well it bloody well shouldn't have been

Didn't help that DS is a crack shot with a rifle and a longbow either.
Only thing he ever endangered was the NT wally at the club who said he practised on cats.
He was joking. DS doesn't get jokes like that.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/12/2012 12:25

YANBU to worry but hopefully the average person will take a step back and consider autism the condition (if he even was on the spectrum) as a separate issue to his actions. Because it is separate.

I have only had very brief first hand experience of knowing someone with Autism when I was younger. But I have learnt a lot about it since joining MN. By the same token I had no particular preconceived ideas about it either, from the little I did know,I knew it was very very broad in terms of how a child/person can be affected. Certainly didn't think all people with Autism/Aspergers were violent or anything.

I can understand why you're concerned. In my current job there is a young man who I think may be on the spectrum, mannerism I've seen described on here by other posters are present. Anyway a couple of my colleagues were calling him an "awkward freak" one day and I suggested that he might have Aspergers and they rounded on me and told me that was really offensive as he obviously couldn't have that because he had a job. Hmm Shock. So ignorant people are out there definitely.

If it does turn out the shooter was definitely autistic,I do think that a support group should come and raise awareness of autism to prevent any further misconceptions.

Feenie · 15/12/2012 12:26

Omg, Nebulous, I can't believe that Head Shock

I really wish you'd given her Fanjo's answer.

Marne · 15/12/2012 12:27

Ok, i promised myself i would not post but couldn't stop myself.

Each child and person with ASD is individual as is everyone, there is no exscuse for what happened yesterday as there is no exscuse for anyone who has taken a life (or in this case lots of lifes).

I have children with asd, including a 19 year old ds who has recently has phycotic episodes (he has been receiving help from mental health services but i have to say the help is not always there). I do my best to raise my children teaching them right from wrong as does any parent, there are times when they are challenging but i try to treat them the same as any other child (they are punished if they do wrong).

The fact this man has ASD should not make people think any differently to how they would if he did not have ASD. Most people who comit these crimes do have some kind of mental health issue (and some people are just pure evil). I dont expect people to brand my children as pottential murederers. There is no exscuse for what happened yesterday, what he did was pure evil and wrong. I just hope that gun laws are tightened even more to stop this happening again.

My heart goes out to all involved.

TheNebulousBoojum · 15/12/2012 12:28

Feenie, I was just grateful that she wasn't his head.

silverfrog · 15/12/2012 13:02

Nebulous, are you who I think you are?

(realise that doesn't make sense Grin; if you arethough, nice to see you!)

TheNebulousBoojum · 15/12/2012 15:56

Offspring of a Goblin in a previous life?
Yup.

TheNebulousBoojum · 15/12/2012 16:15

Unless that's not who you thought I was...Smile

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 15/12/2012 16:33

My worry is that its posted in the DM, who's readers tend to take what shite they write as gospel. I know from experience, ExDP's mother reads it and thinks that Eastern Europeans are to blame for prostitution Hmm.

I would be concerned that this kind of reporting highlights something that a lot of people (myself included) have little understanding of. It may lead idiots to believe that people with autism are dangerous. I think the DM and its 'reporting' style have a lot to answer for, and i completely understand where Piglet is coming from.

hazeyjane · 15/12/2012 16:42

Someone on Facebook linked to an article in an American paper about this earlier, she was worrying about the same thing as Pigletmania, and reading the comments after the article I could see why, with people suggesting lobotomies and locking up 'the mentally/socially disabled' - just grim.

FanjoTimeMammariesAndWine · 15/12/2012 16:55

Has been driving me mad trying to work out what your previous name was Nebulous. .I knew who you were but your handle escaped me.

SantaFlashesHisBoobsALot · 15/12/2012 17:05

My Dad is a Daily Fail reader, will be interested to see what he says about this... Hmm
