Wonder how long it took for the Autistic insults to come

I was reading the DM coverage of the shootings, of course it is very sad and I hope tat the gunman is punished severly, it did not take long for the Autistic insults to come. I read in te same paragraph monster and Autistic, great stereotyping. The DM mentions that he had Autism a lot of times, as if every person with Autism is dangerous and a timebomb waiting to explode. The responses were just as hurtful

I just feel really sad for dd and her future if this is how she will be percieved.

I'm sorry YABU and insensitive to post about yourself at this time.

Rather than worrying about your DDs future in that sense you should be equally worried about the state of the world when children are being gunned down in their classrooms.

He was autistic.

DM reader comments are hardly the height of sophistication or intelligence, they are designed to provoke, written by idiots.

I think it's incredibly bad taste to post what you have. Especially as in your OP not once did you acknowledge what a tragedy this is. Awful.

Witchety · 15/12/2012 09:53

So are they supposed to hide this fact away then? Brush it under the carpet to protect parents of children with autism?

MurderOfGoths · 15/12/2012 09:53

MrsDV Sad but true

SantaFlashesHisBoobsALot · 15/12/2012 09:54

As someone with a personality disorder, it pisses me off how ever horrible event that happens always has a good handful of ''is believed to have suffered from a personality disorder'' thrown about. No wonder the stigma is so huge if the only associations we hear about in the media are these monsters.

MajesticWhine · 15/12/2012 09:54

Sky news app is currently mentioning a personality disorder but not autism.

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 09:54

Brandy Biscuit

MrsMushroom · 15/12/2012 09:54

AllSnowballs no...you AND Witchety have both misunderstood the OP....she has an Autistic DD Fgs!

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 09:55

Wily if you read my op properly I did

OP posts:
Witchety · 15/12/2012 09:56

I haven't misunderstood anything mrsmushroom ?

WileywithSageStuffing · 15/12/2012 09:59

Ah yes you said "of course it is very sad". My mistake.

Bossybritches22 · 15/12/2012 10:01

The boy clearly had MH issues regardless of his autistim (if indeed he was) not a monster but a sick young man.

We should remember he has family who have to live with the horror & shame of what he has done, they have lost a son/brother AND his mother in the most violent way.

OP the DM is not known for the quality of it's reporting, don't let it upset you.

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 10:01

Of course what has happened is dreadful and my thoughts are with those families right now, but I guess this op was a knee jerk reaction to reading that DM article. It just seemed to fuel the negative stereotypes of autistic people. Are we not allowed to discuss this!

OP posts:
Nuttyprofessor · 15/12/2012 10:02

Hopefully it will just start discussions that will give people a greater understanding.

I think people are becoming more aware of what things like autism actually are.

I really don't think there has been a better time in history for DC's with special needs.

WileywithSageStuffing · 15/12/2012 10:02

How else would you like a man who gunned down children be stereotyped - I think "monster" is quite a good description.

The fact he may/may not have autism is always going to come up in news reports. I can't see anyone in day to day life recoiling in horror from your DD thinking she may do the same.

It may turn out he was depressed - what would your view be then? That they shouldn't report it in case idiots think depressed people go around murdering people?

I don't really understand how you think this incident is going to directly impact your DD?

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 10:03

Of course there will be discussion round this topic.

OP posts:
bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 15/12/2012 10:03

op my name is Brady. And why the biscuit?

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 10:05

Yes he is a monster and derenged, of course had severe mental health issues to do something like this. But seeing Autistic and monster In the same sentence

OP posts:
SantaFlashesHisBoobsALot · 15/12/2012 10:07

When you live with an issue that has misunderstanding and sterotypes surrounding it everywhere you turn, and then it is thrust into the news with events like this, it is perfectly reasonable to be upset and concerned on a personal level.

Seeing as he shot himself, we will never know for sure what was going on in his head, but the suspected diagnoses along with the events will follow those of us who have a personal involvement with the conditions around.

TheseGoToEleven · 15/12/2012 10:07

pigletmania, I understood your OP; I have an ASD child also. I have shed many tears for the people in CT and my heart sank this morning when I saw the mention of autism. I don't think for one second that autism had anything to do with this, but I don't want some ignorant fuckwit making that connection and then looking at my child.

Witchety · 15/12/2012 10:08

Why are we all assuming he has 'severe mental health' issues ?

Also, op has the Gary McKinnon case changed people's views on Aspergers?

pigletmania · 15/12/2012 10:08

Sorry Brady yes I am generally an Ok oerson and will admitt if I am being u which I probably am really

OP posts:
pigletmania · 15/12/2012 10:12

I don't know about tat one witchety, but do know that there are a few influential people with Autism,on a personal note I have heard of a few people withAutism who have successful lives so it's no all doom and gloom

OP posts:
PumpkinPositive · 15/12/2012 10:13

DM seems keen to portray the brother as sinister too.

I understand what you mean OP and I saw some comments last night re autism.

I don't understand how he had access to his mothers weapons though.

Some people are sensible and have an understanding of autism, but lots don't and the association of autism with this sort of awful event won't help.
