my anxiety is at a peak right now, feel sick and dizzy. People keep talking about the end of the world and there are programmes on tv about it. Trying hard not to totally freak out!

MrsFlibble · 17/12/2012 11:08

Kayla, its been stated many times its nonsense, its worrying, but try not to think about it.

kaylasmum · 17/12/2012 11:16

but how does anyone know that its nonsense?

No matter how much we tell you that it is nonsense, you are not going to believe us.

Have just read upthread about the supposed planet hiding behind the sun. Seriously?

There was a good article in the Telegraph at the weekend which explained the Mayan calendar issues. If I could be bothered to Google it I would.......

MrsFlibble · 17/12/2012 11:26

Kayla, NASA, scientists and others have said this mayan thing is false, Mayans never predicted the world would end.

as Ever says, you need to address your anxiety, its not nice to live with.

FryOneFatChristmasTurkey · 17/12/2012 11:30

I'm so cynical that I feel people are actively trying to m,ake money on this end of the world nonsense.

Here's an extract of a song released in 1983, which I feel sums up my opinion:

"Another Prophet of Disaster
Who says the ship is lost,
Another Prophet of Disaster
Leaving you to count the cost.
Taunting us with Visions,
Afflicting us with fear,
Predicting war for millions,
In the hope that one appears."

The doomsayers are just ghoulish freaks who are delighting in the misery they cause others.

The Mayans had more than one calendar. This will explain what it's all about.

Pandemoniaa · 17/12/2012 11:37

but how does anyone know that its nonsense?

Because throughout history there have been endless bonkers claims about the end of the world. None of them based on scientific fact, all of them aimed at causing panic or control (in the case of religious crackpots) and all of them false. Not many years ago some buffoon assured everyone the world was going to end and it was with some embarrassment that he slunk out of hiding later that week when absolutely nothing Apocalyptic had occurred.

Please listen to the sensible and factual advice you've been given and keep away from any internet nonsense. It might also be very sensible to go back to your GP and ask for help in controlling your current anxiety.

perceptionInaPearTree · 17/12/2012 11:37

OP, by next week you will have replaced this anxiety with something else. Please try to get more help - do you have support from your family?

InExitCelsisDeo · 17/12/2012 11:38
Xmas Shock
MrsFlibble · 17/12/2012 11:39

Wasnt the world meant to end in October according to some god botherer, after claiming it was meant to end in April, cant remember his name.

MrsFlibble · 17/12/2012 11:41

Harold Camping, that was the headcase.

kaylasmum · 17/12/2012 11:43

i have'nt discussed it with my family, i don't want to worry them. really don't want to go to my gp, they will probably laugh me out of the surgery.

OP posts:
Cezella · 17/12/2012 11:44

I suffer from terrible anxiety just like you kaylasmum and am also terrified, a lot of people on this thread have helped me but we just have to put it out of our heads and try not to worry. I've got a lovely night out planned for Friday so really hoping I'm still here to enjoy it!

Pandemoniaa · 17/12/2012 11:45

Why would your GP laugh you out of the surgery? I'm sure they will take your fears very seriously. You mention that you've had cbt earlier in the thread so your anxiety has been taken seriously before and will be again. But you really can't carry on like this.

Fakebook · 17/12/2012 11:45

OP, nothing will happen. Even with the solar flares, they just affect radio waves and such. The world won't end because of it.

When we get through the 21st will you feel better? Or do you think your anxiety will stay?

MrsFlibble · 17/12/2012 11:46

Kayla I get the feeling this is not the only thing you've felt anxious about, you need anti anxiety tablets to cure the sickness, i took those and some counselling, dont suffer alone, and no one will laugh, you told us and we aint laughing, anxiety is very serious.

Hopengloooooooooooooooria · 17/12/2012 11:46

As I said on your other thread...

All of this hoohah comes down to the fact that some ancient people had an amazing calendar that was so good that it's cycle outlasted their civilisation, and they didn't hang around to update it. This is no different to buying a calendar for each year. With your logical head on you know that just because the calendar ends on the 31st December you WILL still wake up on the 1st January.

Jossysgiants · 17/12/2012 11:48

fry you have hit the nail on the head. For whatever reason, there are people who love to create fear and misery. The Internet makes it worse. Cast your mind back to 2000 and the supposed millennium bug. I listened to the fearmongering rubbish then, and it spoiled my enjoyment of an exciting time and a New Year's piss up. Cast your mind back to May last year, when that guy was talking about the end of the world. At the time, I was camping in the middle of a field. Not the best location to be for the end of the world, even though tis an excellent tent. I have learnt to actively not listen to this crap and recognise it for what it is- which is hard as i share your anxious tendencies. But all this is just toxic misery creation. Like the dementors in Harry Potter. Do you have some real life support? I also strongly recommend now that you are feeling so anxious that you totally restrict your access to the Internet and Tv, and perhaps ask someone to look after these devices for you while you tackle your anxiety until Saturday which I am certain will come. . I know this sounds extreme but these things are not serving you. And then really look at how to move forward. Do you have plans for today? X

chocolateistheenemy · 17/12/2012 11:54

OP I really feel how anxious you are and believe me, I know how horrible it is and how it completely overwhelms you.
Are you able to self-refer back to the Depression & Anxiety Service that you had CBT with? I ask this because I've just finished a course of CBT, which, along with a very high dose of Venlafaxine, has enabled my GAD score to drop from 20 out of 21 to only 3 out of 21.
Remember the golden rule - this is a lapse; not a relapse.
Is it the stress of Christmas which has tipped you back into anxiety land again?
Your GP can give you more info on Venlafaxine which is specifically for GAD. It has worked for me where everything else has failed.

perceptionInaPearTree · 17/12/2012 12:29

No one is going to laugh at you, as others have said anxiety is a very real problem. And you can get better and when you do you will see it was worth seeking help to enable you have a happier existence.

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree · 17/12/2012 12:57

kaylasmum im gonna pm you im in the same boat hope thats ok.

FryOneFatChristmasTurkey · 17/12/2012 14:46

kaylasmum do please go and see your GP. He/she will realise it's not the "end of the world" that is the problem but will instead focus on the anxiety that lies behind it. I'm sure he/she will see that if it wasn't the Mayan calendar then your anxiety would focus on something else.

In getting help from your GP, it will help you and your DCs. Thanks
