Over thinking gone mad. The marks and john lewis threads are probably aimed at me as I shop there but I find them quite offensive and totally unrealistic too.But I accept that some people live that way and it speaks to them and that is advertising.

Over thinking? I'll think as much as I like thanks.

The message I take from this ad is this is what your Christmas should be like and you should be happy about it because you're a MUM SAINT. It makes me stabby.

noddyholder · 08/11/2012 10:27

It makes you feel stabby that some people don't do what you do at xmas? They don't do what I do but that is like all families. They do different things for xmas holidays birthdays etc,it is not one size fits all.

vjg13 · 08/11/2012 10:27

I didn't 'over think' the advert, I just had an instant, appalled reaction.

socharlotte · 08/11/2012 10:27

Why is offensive!I enjoy all the preparations for xmas. Also I (like many mothers) work much fewer hours than DH so it's only fair I do most of it!
I think it's funny where she is left with the pouffe to sit on.

noddyholder · 08/11/2012 10:30

I am not talking bout anyones instant reaction that is just what we all do. I am talking about the dissecting etc which I haven't seen with any other ads on here and some are appallingly sexist. My dp is completely not the car fixing lawn mowing golfing m and s clad type but he accepts that some men are. The ads for those things aren't aimed at a musician who likes cooking!

vjg13 · 08/11/2012 10:31

I thought the bit with her sitting on the pouffe was actually the worst bit, total lack of manners and respect shown to the mum.

HeadlessForHalloween · 08/11/2012 10:34

I'm from the Midlands too, brought up in a council terrace by a working class dad. I am a sahm, while my dh is the "breadwinner" . I also shop at ASDA. I still hate the fecking advert. I didn't over think it either. My reaction of "what the fuck" was pretty instant!

squoosh · 08/11/2012 10:35

Interesting seeing the other advertising execs opinions on the ad. Seems to be quite split. And in now way am I angry that other people don't do the same thing as I do at Christmas, it's anger that a major retailer is peddling this sexist twaddle.

At the weekend I asked my 70 something mother if she'd seen the ad. She asked 'oh the one with that eejit of a woman wearing herself out doing everything?'. I grew up in pretty traditional household but thankfully not as 'traditional' as this Asda home which lots of people keep telling me is true to life.

Thanks Mum!!

I think its crap too but don't see the same attack on any other ads. There are loads of crap cliche ads

HeadlessForHalloween · 08/11/2012 10:37

vjg If I had been slaving away all day at the Christmas dinner for my whole family, getting the pouffe would have resulting in me losing my temper big time Grin

I can't believe she just sits on it and ruefully smiles!

noddy lots of adverts annoys me for their stereotypes and sexism (proud sponsor of mums, grr) but this advert goes all out.

jumpingbeans · 08/11/2012 10:43

Well, its done it's job- you are all talking about it !!

squoosh · 08/11/2012 10:45

Actually it hasn't done its job until it's convinced people to do their Christmas shopping there.

Right now I'm distinctly unconvinced.

HeadlessForHalloween · 08/11/2012 11:06

Yeah, talking about ASDA, but we will be doing our Christmas shop in Morrisons this year!

noddyholder · 08/11/2012 11:09

It is filmed in the same mini film style as the posh shops which is presenting the asda customer with the same glowy family at home scenario but in a way they find acceptable which is probably what they set out to do. IIRC the asda ads are usually more store based whereas the JL/Waitrose ones are more home situations so they have gone down that road which will make its shoppers think they are getting the same thing but Cheaper!!!!!! It is full of crap cliches like all of them.
