as for christmas dinner, we both work like maniacs over the holidays (busiest time of the year for both of us) so three cheers for Sainsbury's Christmas meals (or forzen aunty Betsy or whatever she's called). All I have to do is decide which one to go with. DH will decorate the tree with the kids as it's really NOT my thing and no one is happy when I get involved :-)

BegoniaBampot · 07/11/2012 12:26

Hiddenhome - your posts have made me quite sad. It can be hard getting the balance in a relationship where everyone is happy, maybe impossible all the time. Don't think I could love someone who showed me so little regard.

Xenia · 07/11/2012 12:32

Sexist ads which enforce stereotypes are objected to not because people feel they highlight their own insecurities but because they ensure bad behaviour continues. If you only ever see women cleaning you think only women clean. If a woman never works in a shop or job (Saudi) you think women cannot work. If you always see black women as cleaners not leading surgeons or US presidents you might similarly make assumptions. Adverts matter for these reasons.

twilight3 · 07/11/2012 12:40

Xenia, like I said, if you expect people to make these assumption by watching the TV than by looking at real life around them... then it probably means that the majority of their time is mispent

twilight3 · 07/11/2012 12:40

misspent even Blush

shewhowines · 07/11/2012 12:52

Yes I agree Xenia but this add is obviously not meant to be taken seriously. How many Grans really read 50 shades?

shewhowines · 07/11/2012 12:52

ad sorry

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 07/11/2012 12:54

It made me laugh... it is fairly typical of many households. If you want to get overwrought by something, do it about child poverty or actual abuse or something, not a bloody asda advert.

squoosh · 07/11/2012 12:58

Blah, blah, blah.

Because people are only allowed to be offended by Big Issues of abuse and poverty? God forbid someone might be capable of having opinions on many matters including trivial old sexism.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 07/11/2012 13:20

We saw this last night - dd said 'it mainly just made me look forward to Christmas but I KNOW IT'S SEXIST'.

Jux · 07/11/2012 13:42

An amazing thing happened when we moved from SW London to the Real SW. Dh had been a useless, lazy cunt, incapable of doing anything much at all that could be construed as 'domestic'.

Once here, he became a capable adult! He does at least as much as I do domestically, especially at Xmas.

The really interesting thing is that in our old flat, we shopped at Asda!

There isn't an Asda anywhere near us here. We go to Lidl.

Who'd have thought changing your supermarket would have such a profound effect on a man's abilities?

GO TO LIDL; I can't recommend it highly enough.

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 07/11/2012 13:49

Jux Grin

MrsMymble · 07/11/2012 13:52

As an aside, one of my jobs is in a shop. I have sold LOADS of copies of 50 Shades to granny-aged women!

Xenia · 07/11/2012 13:59

There is certainly ageism too if people think older women don't like and have sex. In fact they have more than young mothers who are more often too tired.

shrimponastick · 07/11/2012 14:19

How annoying.

I typed out along response and then mn went off.

humph.

Anyway I just saw the ad f orthe first time. It made me cross. So cross.

It is representative of how it was in my childhood though, and not too far removed from current times - with me doing the bulk of the donkey work.

I feckin' hate Christmas.

OhDearSpareHeadTwo · 07/11/2012 15:13

I thought it was hilarious. Certainly reflects reality (although highly exaggerated) in all the households I know - and certainly reflects plenty of whingy AIBU threads where various Mumsnetters start frothing at the mouth because their DH/PILs/DC expect them to do everything.

I think some people are taking it a bit seriously

YourMam · 07/11/2012 15:42

Blimey I thought it was blood awful. If that was my Christmas I'd cancel it.

LineRunner · 07/11/2012 15:47

I still find it about as funny as Bruce Forsythe.

MaureenLove · 07/11/2012 16:11

my mil read 50 shades and agreed its turgid shite

OP posts:
Darkesteyes · 07/11/2012 16:17

Agree Chandon.

Darkesteyes · 07/11/2012 16:27

Xenia has no problem with women being subservient "servants" if they are on low wages or benefits. Because as far as Xenia is concerned feminism is only for rich women.

He could also try advertising like this couple are www.gumtree.com/p/jobs/couple-looking-for-a-job/1002528572

IvanaDvinkYourBlad · 07/11/2012 16:52

I see The Daily Mail have picked up on it - well, the twitter side of it anyway.

MrsJamin · 07/11/2012 17:04

Are cheapie ASDA at the best of times but this is just dreadful. The mum has the worst seat at the table and even washes up after cooking! Truly awful.

MrsJamin · 07/11/2012 17:05

Not sure what I meant to write - I think "I hate cheapo ASDA"

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 07/11/2012 17:14

I think this ad, if meant to be tongue in cheek will backfire spectacularly on ASDA. I would want to throw the turkey remains at the DH when he asks "what's for tea"
