Because my mum thinks it isn't, and I should cut mine. It's very cheap to have long hair and also you can tie it up when you can't be asked to wash it

My mum goes back and for between short-back-and-sides, bob and long hair, light blonde, red and dark brown. I don't think she'll be telling me what to do with mine any time soon Grin

Chandon · 29/10/2012 14:47

my mum has been moaning about my long hair for ever (ever since I had the guts to grow it long at age 17). She thinks I should have it cut in a modern cut, like, say Audrey Hepburn (bless). She has been saying this since the eighties ;)

I am 40 with long hair. It's nice, in good condition, and regularly cut so it doesn't go ratstaily.

what is it with mums?! My dad could not care less how I wear my hair.

shockers · 29/10/2012 15:24

Our neighbour is 77 and has long grey hair which she wears in a chignon. She looks beautiful, and very elegant.

I'm 45, I have long (below bra strap) wavey hair, have a bit of a fringe. I love my hair, I wear it up or down, classy or a bit wild. I have a few highlights to break up the brown a bit. I go to the hairdressers 3 or 4 times a year. I have a few grey hairs which I pull out!!! or every 2 or 3 months I use a nice and easy root thing which has a little pot of tint and a comb, you just comb where the grey is, and voila.
My hair is in good condition and feels really soft.

Mayisout · 29/10/2012 15:44

I am in California and there is loads of long hair, have seen more grey ponytails here than ever before (male and female).

Now wonder why in the UK we are so obsessed with hacking hair to bits. Ok some styles can be flattering and there is a fair share or short spiky hair here, on the right people it looks great, but really, long hair is easier and in the damp wet weather of the UK it would be easier longish and loose than blow-dried/ moussed/ gelled into goodness know what unnatural shape.

TheOnlyPersonInTheDarkDarkRoom · 29/10/2012 15:45

long head hair is perfectly acceptable
long mole/beard/tache/ear hair should be dealt with, and 35 is the ideal age to start

zamantha · 29/10/2012 16:00

Dare I say it - when you get to a certain age, I think a bit shorter is a bit more flattering, makes you look younger.

Not at 35 though - that is young.

I'm 48, had long hair cut to just above shoulders about 3 years ago - still full, longish and curly but somehow brastrap length doesn't feel right now. Don't feel old just want to look well groomed.

It is true well groomed long grey hair can look good - just I don't feel right with it. BTW I'm not grey at all yet - sure it will come. Then I may reach for the bottle of colouring [hblush]

2rebecca · 29/10/2012 16:02

I'm in my 40s and still have longish hair. It has kept its colour though and I do need to get it cut regularly. I suspect within the next 5-10 years I'll get it cut because I don't want to look like an old crone.
I think women from the older generation (now 60+) did go for the set and perm etc earlier than younger generations who are more likely to have their hair styled more naturally.
I think long grey hair is very ageing.

AntoinetteCosway · 29/10/2012 16:02

My step mother is in her early 60s and has past shoulder length silver-grey hair. It's thick and gorgeous and much nicer than mine.

mouldyironingboard · 29/10/2012 16:31

I think that very long hair can make you look older in your forties but not at 35. I get a shock when someone with youthful, waist length hair turns around and has a wrinkly, lined face! If long grey hair isn't in excellent condition I think it tends to look a bit like a witch.

Shoulder length hair is generally far more flattering than very short styles on most women aged 40-60.

ScaryHalloweenNameChange · 29/10/2012 16:39

I have long hair (MN haircut) and love it.

Wtf is an MN haircut? Confused

Are there hoards of mnetters out there with the same haircut? Is there a secret handshake? I'm intrigued.

Thumbwitch · 29/10/2012 16:45

I'm mid 40s with long hair, no grey and no intention of cutting it any time soon.

Stupidly annoying "norms" that say I should have short hair hold no sway with me - old ladies in long-ago times would have had long hair that they kept up in buns/ plaits or whatever.

Do what makes you happy, not your mum!

As an aside, my MIL had very short cropped hair until she retired last year at 70 - she's now got more length to it, short bob style and it suits her sooo much better!

FromEsme · 29/10/2012 16:51

I find it very odd that anyone thinks 35 is too old for anything.

That way becoming an old biddy lies. I am 30 in a month and I still feel like a child.

fussychica · 29/10/2012 16:59

I'm in my mid 50s have just on the shoulder length hair, graduating to chin length at the front, which I have highlighted very finely done to hide the few grey hairs which have crept in over the last few years.
I hate my hair short so I can't imagine getting it cut shorter anytime soon. Certainly, can't imagine having a set like people of my age might have done 20 years ago.

Woozley · 29/10/2012 17:10

I agree!

My hair is much easier long. It is thick and wavy, any shorter styles take a lot of styling on a daily basis. I had it very short for a time but that is expensive as it needs cutting more often. Plus I get bored with one style and longer hair allows me to be more creative - can have it in various up dos, down, half up half down, curly or straight. It's a bit like this Michelle Fairley though not quite that long - will be by this time next year :)

My mum is 73 and still has long hair, though she has it back in a plait or in a ponytail or bun. It's blonde/grey and still in nice condition. She finds shorter styles harder to manage.

As I said on a similar thread, it depends what suits you. Some short "easy to manage" styles can be very ageing.

dee1dee · 29/10/2012 18:30

At 35 I think you're old enough to decide how to have your hair. My Victorian great Gran had long hair for ever and always kept it in a nice bun. She was 90's and looked very elegant. (as seen in photos and as my gran told me) Keep it long!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 29/10/2012 18:33

I agree with Mouldy - shoulder length hair is far more flattering on most 40-60 year olds than ultra short hair. I had short hair for most of my 40s, have grown it just past my shoulders in the last couple ofyears and everyone says it suits me better!

CBuzz · 29/10/2012 18:37

Have your hair as long as you like - who cares what anyone else thinks anyway! You never know when it may all fall out (like mine did earlier this year - alopecia sucks!!)

Chislemum · 29/10/2012 18:41

I am 39 and had my hair well over should length until I fell pregnant with 38. Now hair is sort of shoulder length and since I did not dye over the last years I have some grey wings. I thought I was too old to have it that long. Weirdly enough I had decided to grow and dye (it is medium brown) just to fell younger again.... I think I will do just that and slap some Nivea on my laughter lines. :)

LadyofWinterfell · 29/10/2012 19:08

MIL is 69 and has had the OAP bubble perm since she was 24. DM is 58 and has lower back length thick naturally highlighted hair that DD2 has inherited [henvy] . I know which i'd rather have as i get older!

ginnybag · 29/10/2012 19:26

31, but my hair is past my knees and I have no intention of cutting it.

Like many on here, my hair is much easier long. I had it bobbed at 12 - I was Hermione Granger till it grew out again!

i have neither the time nor the talent to be styling in every day. I have not a clue what to do with straighteners, curlers, gels, mouses, etc etc. I wash, I brush, I plait, I ignore. T'is fab!

PacificDogwood · 29/10/2012 19:44

Well, I am 46 and growing my hair ShockWink - chin length bob at present, aiming for shoulder length
The grey OTOH - gah!

ginny, past your knees?? I am impressed!

Romilly70 · 29/10/2012 20:16

I'm 42 and have boob length hair. started getting the odd grey hair after DS was born 2years ago, so had some low lights put in.
apart from that, only have it cut twice a year and blow dry myself about every 2 months (washed more often, but never enough time to indulge in a blowdry)

scottishmummy · 29/10/2012 20:22

35 isn't old, don't get a mammy easy to manage hair cut
so long as in good condition good cut long hair is nice
style your hair however you wish
