Because my mum thinks it isn't, and I should cut mine. It's very cheap to have long hair and also you can tie it up when you can't be asked to wash it

I'm 55 next birthday and have hair halfway down my back.
I only started growing it when the condition improved dramatically after turning vegan when I was about 48. my stepdaughters tell me I look younger now than I did when they met me!
It's still my natural colour, my Daughters tell me they will let me know if there comes a time when it needs dying, as I have very few grey hairs do far.

My mother didn't approve of course, but I'd rather listen to my daughters!

L01S · 28/10/2012 18:30

Well, I'm in my early 40s and perhaps I will go short and chic when I'm 50 but what I don't want is inbetween hair. My friend told me that she read in a magazine recently that either short OR long is the most youthful when you are no longer so youthful!

L01S · 28/10/2012 18:31

and inbetween length was perceived to be the most ageing. so no thanks to that.

Glitterknickaz · 28/10/2012 18:34

Yeah, I'm 34 and mum told me to cut my hair short last year...

halcyondays · 28/10/2012 18:41

Of course it is. I'm 34 and have long hair.Grin Plenty of people do. Agree that it's cheaper as you don't have to get it cut as often as you do short hair and I am rubbish at styling hair so long hair is much easier for me.

AdoraBell · 28/10/2012 18:49

I'm 44 with long hair, and it's going grey tooGrin. I like it, so I'm keeping it, so there.

diddl · 28/10/2012 18:59

I´m nearly 50 & have hair just past my shoulders & there´s some grey.

And I don´t care!!

I want hair like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?q=grey+hair&start=257&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=50t&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=9dLDjGSyHShOxM:&imgrefurl=everbeautiful.com/%3Fp%3D7953&docid=4bS5oUtoVIlG9M&imgurl=everbeautiful.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/grey-hair-q.jpg&w=272&h=230&ei=IoCNUI2JKcei4gSwwIDICw&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=625&sig=117809274861365110405&page=7&tbnh=149&tbnw=175&ndsp=43&ved=1t:429,r:77,s:200,i:235&tx=100&ty=80&biw=1525&bih=741" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 28/10/2012 19:01

I'm 31 and I have waist length hair. It will be dyed when it goes grey. I don't care if people think I should have it cut. I do have longer hair than most of my friends.

cuttingpicassostoenails · 28/10/2012 19:07

I am sixty years old and my hair is halfway down my back. It's in good condition and I colour it to hide the grey.

3monkeys3 · 28/10/2012 19:10

I'm 30 and am growing my hair at the moment - it is a fair bit past my shoulders now! I got asked for ID buying booze yesterday, so I guess I don't look too old for long hair (sorry - I'm mentioning to as often as possible, as a new 30something I was beyond excited!)!

roguepixie · 28/10/2012 19:11

I am 45 and have hair that skims my lower back.

I, too, thumb my nose in the general direction of the fashion/hair police that tell me I am too old and shall continue to do so ... even when I am grey. [hgrin]

So there.

FryOneGhoulishGhostlyManic · 28/10/2012 19:19

I started turning grey at 23, so I dye it (am now 44). I had waist length hair until about 12 years ago when I had it cut off in a fit of pique (hair fell into DD's dirty nappy as I was changing her, once too often). And instantly regretted it.

I am now finally trying to grow it again, but this time I'll have some layers in it to add volume (which is better than it was as it's gone a bit thicker now..)

Once it's all white (like my dad) I'll stop dyeing it.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 28/10/2012 19:25

38, long hair. And yes, it's cheap because I cut it myself. When I've had it short in the past I've needed to go to the hairdresser every 6 weeks or so.

I dye it, I found my first grey at 16 and have dyed ever since.

And yes, my mum goes on at me to get a "nice short bob" or similar old-lady haircut. She tutted a lot last summer when I did a pink dip-dye.

DoesItComeInBlack · 28/10/2012 19:35

In my 40's with long hair, dyed to a natural colour and no intention of going short at all ever- MY OH loves long hair and would throw a fit if I had it cut, and it's easier to manage long anyway.

MedusaIsHavingABadHairDay · 28/10/2012 19:35

44 here and growing it long for the first time. A few greys but I have it coloured regularly and I feel feminine for the first time ever! It's also so much easier for work (school).

My Mum keeps banging on about being too old for long hair as well, and I keep ignoring her. My 4 teens tell me it's much nicer long so I'm keeping it!

yellowsubmarine53 · 28/10/2012 19:40

Long hair is cheap - I go to the hairdressers twice a year max when my hair is long.

I've recently had my mid-back length cut to my neck and now want it shorter. It's liberating having short hair, but it does involve going to the hair dressers more often.

I'm well past 35. Well-groomed long hair can look good at any age.

ipswichwitch · 28/10/2012 19:47

I'm 35 and have long hair. A number of people told me I'd be cutting it off when I had DS- seems to be the done thing here as soon as you give birth!! I've no interest in having short hair. Frankly I'd look ludicrous with short hair. It's still it original colour (only one persistent grey hair so far) and not at all witchy, despite what the nn may suggest...

EcoLady · 28/10/2012 19:54

44, waist length, mousy with lots of natural silver highlights!

I wear it twisted up during the day, with one of my vast selection of fab hairclips. I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the variety of what I can do with it, combined with the simplicity of wash, comb, leave.

I used to have a short crop with cap highlights. The cut was every 5 weeks and highlights done every 3rd cut. It used to have to be washed and styled every morning. Now I have the length cut twice a year, do my own fringe (cheapskate!), wash alternate days and twist it up - job done.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/10/2012 20:31

YANBU. As long as hair is in good condition it's fine. If it's not ok to have long hair after 35,someone needs to tell almost every actress in Hollywood!

Cathycomehome · 28/10/2012 20:36

I don't believe it! ( victor meldrew style). Not one of you thinks I am unreasonable so far!!

OP posts:
freddiefrog · 28/10/2012 20:39

YANBU.

I'm 36 with bra strap length wavy hair.

I look daft and really butch with short hair, and it's more effort to style

It's grey under all the hair dye, but other than the odd bit of root, I've not actually seen my natural colour in years

Autumnchill · 28/10/2012 20:39

YANBU, I am 39 next week and growing my hair after years of having it short. I feel this will be my last attempt, just want to have long hair, just once! As long as its maintained I don't see a problem.

Cathycomehome · 28/10/2012 20:44

It's funny though, I think I'm the only one of my friends with long hair, apart from one, my best mate. Chin length bobs seem the way to go amongst my friends?

OP posts:
Fiendishlie · 28/10/2012 20:48

I'm 42 with waist-length dyed hair. I couldn't give a flying fuck if someone thought I was too old! I do what I like. It's quite curly and I cut it myself using the mumsnet hair style method, only a couple of times a year, though!

perrista · 28/10/2012 21:41

35! My 65 year old mum is growing her hair long and I think it looks great! You keep it long! Grin
