spitting feathers over an article i read yesterday in the newspaper about this subject. it's common knowledge that the average size is 16 and over in this country so how would that make a lot of women feel? does it really matter what your size? also why the emphasis on women why not men? many of them carry weight, noone seems to say anything about it. we all come in various shapes, sizes and colours and everyone is unique and beautiful in their own way be it inside or out. media should stop giving us these so called ideals and let us decide for ourselves how we wish to look.

Ok, so to summarise. Some people are chubby at 12/14, some are not. Some people dislike fat people, some don't. Everyone would quite like to healthy. That about it?

mrsfuzzy · 25/10/2012 17:44

weegiemum just catching up with latest posts, you are an inspiration to a lot over weight people and shows it can be achieved, well done and keep up the good work.

Did any one see that new HBO show 'Girls' on Monday. I was thinking how good it was that the main character was a bit chunky, but nicely so, infact all the girls in Girls looked real........but when the main girl was weighed in the second episode it told us her weight was 143 lbs, now I would have had her down as being much heavier than that, it just goes to show that we all have pre conceived ideas of people's weight..........does that make sense.

MaureenCognito · 25/10/2012 17:59

the show was dull though i thought

DontmindifIdo · 25/10/2012 17:59

FreddyMcKruger - that could be because often people on screen appear bigger than they really are. (both width and height, there's been a number of threads when people talk about meeting celebs and being shocked how short/thin/generally petite they are in real life)

PumpkInDublic · 25/10/2012 18:06

Loveweekends10 I don't give a fuck what weight you are, but when you accuse someone of being autistic as a witty retort you are a twat. Fat, skinny or inbetween, still a twat.

PumpkInDublic · 25/10/2012 18:09

Ooops Forgot. I'm 5ft 7 and a size twelve, bout 10 stone. I have pencil thing legs and arms, rather chubby middle and thighs. Arse as flat and saggy as a pancake. I look like a toothpaste tube that has been squeezed funny.

youmeatsix · 25/10/2012 18:15

doesnt matter what the average is, it doesnt make size 14 NOT chubby, confused

CrunchyFrog · 25/10/2012 18:53

I feel fat at a size 10 bottom/ 12-14 top. I'm 5'7

I felt fat as a size 18 16 stone fat person too.

I am still chubby. Not on face or limbs, but I'm an arseless wonder. 39-31-35. Totally top heavy, and flabby middle.

I have a muffin top even with no clothes on. I need to lose at least another stone, and I need to do it by cutting out sugar and other refined carbs.

Most of my motivation is health though, 2 siblings with type II diabetes, both only early 30s. Got to get that waist down!

FolkGhoul · 25/10/2012 18:54

I'm 5'3".

I'm a size 12.

I'm most definitely chubby!

Not fat, but definitely a cuddly chubster!

Sorry.

chipsandpeas · 25/10/2012 19:00

im 5ft 5 and a 12 to 14 - i would describe myself as chubby - im still a stone overweight to what would be considered the upper end of normal in the BMI

teatimesthree · 25/10/2012 19:07

As tons of people have said, it really depends on your shape. I am an apple, and the difference between a 12 and a 14 is a chubby tummy. A small 12 is the perfect size for me, at a large 12 I start to look chubby because my tummy is spilling out everywhere. Obv for hourglasses/pears it's a different story.

Latara · 25/10/2012 19:32

I'm not outstandingly obese compared to a lot of women round here; i'm very curvy (hourglass shape) with a tendency to a fat stomach at times.
I dress carefully to appear a bit thinner.

Men have only commented negatively when i was particularly skinny at age 19 - i was 7st10lb & 5'4'' - no, there were no compliments, in fact the men i worked with were concerned.

And 1 man commented that i had a 'fat arse' at 10 stone - still 'normal weight' for my height - he's a proven total wanker so i didn't take his opinion seriously.

I wish i was 10 stone now though.

I've started eating much more healthily & exercising so fingers crossed it will all help.

I don't care about 'dress size' - it's Waist Measurements & BMI that count.

JessePinkman · 25/10/2012 19:50

I think it was Karl Lagerfeld. His experience has probably shaped his view. I think he called the singer Adele chubby.

LibrarianByDay · 25/10/2012 21:50

Erm... Adele is chubby. IMHO.

I'm 5'2" and wear a size 8 and I am definitely chubby around my middle. Everyone has different ideas about what is chubby and what isn't, I guess. Totally agree with goinnowhere upthread.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/10/2012 21:52

I agree with Librarian Karl Lagerfeld was rude but not inaccurate.

SchrodingersUndeadMew · 25/10/2012 23:13

I'm 5'2 and a size 12 and am classed as obese according to my Dr.

That's not healthy at all so yabu.

fatlazymummy · 25/10/2012 23:21

That explains it then. Karl Langerfield is an expert on fashion, not health and fitness.

purplepenguin86 · 26/10/2012 03:32

I agree with Librarian too - I don't think Karl Lagerfeld should have said something, but what he said was true.

I think you would have to be very tall to not be a bit chubby at a size 14. The average UK dress size being a 16 means nothing, as the average person also has an overweight BMI. I also think you can have a healthy BMI and still look chubby - I certainly used to look quite overweight when I was a size 12 (am 5'5) and was still within a healthy BMI, but I have a very small bone structure. Of course you can also have an overweight BMI and not look chubby, like some sportspeople etc. But I do think most people would look chubby at a size 14, and many shorter people at less than that.

Beaverfeaver · 26/10/2012 07:35

I'm 5ft 4 and 12, some days I feel positively skinny, but others I do feel chubby.
I used to be an 18 though, so it's not all bad

nellie02 · 26/10/2012 09:53

I'm almost six foot tall. When I'm a size 12 I'm slim, ribs showing bmi of 21 type slim. A size 10 and I look ill.

When I was a size 16 my bmi was 24. I felt chubby.

When I'm a size 14 (like now), I know I could be slimmer whilst still being healthy, but my bmi is still very normal.

My shorter friends are always surprised by how much I weigh and my dress size. My colleague is 6 inches shorter than me but the same weight and she is both overweight (bmi) and a little bit chubby. She is also extremely fit (does triathlons and runs for fun) and eats healthily. Where as I get to eat cake and stay a healthy bmi.

Mind you, I'm still totally envious of those my height but slimmer.

TinyDancingHoofer · 26/10/2012 12:05

Size 12 on me would be very chubby, i get massive hamster cheeks. Just because the average woman is a size 16 it doesn't mean size 16 is normal. IMO a 16 would definitely be chubby for the majority of women. But chubby suits some people, really depends on the person.

carabos · 26/10/2012 15:28

Anyone seen the New Statesman chart of the day - the price of inequality? It says that 63.8% of the UKfemale population over the age of 15 is overweight or obese. 67.8% of men. Only the US is fatter.

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2012 12:26

interesting too the gap in teenage pregnancy statistics.

TessOfTheBurbervilles · 27/10/2012 12:35

I often wonder if Karl Lagerfeld ever looks in the mirror before he criticises someone else for how they look?
