spitting feathers over an article i read yesterday in the newspaper about this subject. it's common knowledge that the average size is 16 and over in this country so how would that make a lot of women feel? does it really matter what your size? also why the emphasis on women why not men? many of them carry weight, noone seems to say anything about it. we all come in various shapes, sizes and colours and everyone is unique and beautiful in their own way be it inside or out. media should stop giving us these so called ideals and let us decide for ourselves how we wish to look.

What digerd said at 12.28.

When I was a teenager, size 14 used to equal 36" bust, 26" waist, 38" hips.

I was a size 14 (and 5'10" tall) in my teens and thought I was ENORMOUS back then. But I found an old favourite skirt in a trunk, bought from Wallis in 1978. The waist measures only 13" across! Shock Shock

I am now a (2012 stylee) menopausal size 18 Sad. But it's undeniable that people are a lot bigger than they were 35 years ago. I am constantly surprised by the number of very chubby youngsters I see around on my uni campus - something which rather blows out the hideous MN stereotype about fat people being stupid lazy greedy ignorant underclass junk-scoffing chavs.

RightsaidFreud · 25/10/2012 13:36

Lapsed That's known as the 'freshers 15'- look it up, student can gain on average 15lb in their first year of uni! Probably All that junk food/booze!

TheReturnOfBridezilla · 25/10/2012 13:36

Unless you are tall and broad enough to carry it, a size 12/14 can look chubby IMO. Particularly today due to the vanity sizing in most shops.

I'm 5"5 and petite and would be overweight at a size 12/14. I've seen chubby looking tens but then again I've seen, tall, skinny twelves. It's to do with body shape.

digerd · 25/10/2012 13:41

Lapsed

Yes there was no " give" in those waist bands, and as I always had a high rate of metabolism ( don't hate me anyone), I was a large eater, and afterwards often had to undo the button while sitting. Now, I,m not so active, don;t eat the amount I did, but can only sit in elasticated waists now !!!! Despite being 53 kilos and size 8-10. Oh, the jolly process of aging.

digerd · 25/10/2012 13:45

ageing !!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 25/10/2012 13:54

I was clinically obese at size 14-16. Overweight at size 12. I'm 5ft 4.

hopkinette · 25/10/2012 14:16

I'm 4'4" and I weigh 3000kg and I'm a size 6-8.

Hammy02 · 25/10/2012 14:33

I have never been a size 8 but when I was a 10/12 my bones stuck out and I looked awful. Everyone is different. I don't think you can label a size and say it is too fat or thin. I know someone that is a size 8 and she is quite chunky.

Haberdashery · 25/10/2012 14:51

I am a size 8 (or smaller, depending on the shop) and have a bit of a tummy, a large and wobbly bottom (relative to the rest of my size) and am slap bang in the middle of the healthy fat percentage range as measured by my brother's highly snazzy bathroom scales. My bones don't stick out. If I were a size 10 I would be chubby. If I put enough weight on to be a size 12+ I would be outright fat. People's bodies are all different.

doobiedoobiedoobie · 25/10/2012 15:02

Well doe Weegie, thats fab!

Agree with everyone saying its entirely dependent on body shape/ height etc. I. 5ft10 and a 12ish and I'm too big. Not deluding myself, low self esteem big, but seriously too chubby. In clothes I look OK but I have a lot of fat round my waist since having dd2 (7months) that I need to lose. At a stone lighter, a size 10 and most importantly, more toned, I'd be healthier. At a size 14 I'd probably not look too bad due to my height, but I'd be unhealthily big.

blackcurrants · 25/10/2012 15:41

am 5 ft 8 and quite fat at the moment [hgrin] - also 7 months pregnant and anyone who wants to say anything about it can say it to my face and get a good punching.

Being a 12 as an adult I was pretty slim, and only got to that size by worrying constantly about my weight, exercising for hours every day, writing down everything I ate - in effect, I got to that size by acting like a woman with an eating disorder. I'm never doing that again. 14's about right for me, it usually means I am exercising enough and I feel fit and strong, which is a wonderful feeling. 16 isn't outrageous but bigger than that and I'm fat. Which I am presently. Which is fine. Got other things to be doing at the moment rather than worry about my weight.

Fuck the impossible patriarchal beauty standards, numbers on a shirt or a scale are no measure of me as a person.

mindosa · 25/10/2012 15:41

On me 12-14 is chubby

Latara · 25/10/2012 16:06

I'm buying size 12-18 - depending on the shop & type of clothing, also i'm different sizes top & bottom halves.

Size 18 makes me feel chubby but can be most flattering actually compared to smaller sizes.

Depends on the individual person; their shape & feelings on the subject IMO.

Latara · 25/10/2012 16:08

I have tops & leggings in size 12, skirts size 14, cardis & blouses size 18, jeans size 16... all fit me, so you see what i mean?

PerryCombover · 25/10/2012 16:21

weird the difference frame size makes in all this.....

Thanks geegee, you see now I have had:

"you look more than chubby" (ie, fat) to
"You like quite slim".

Which kind of proves that it it is all completely subjective and it is a lot about how your feel.

Whilst i am not at all offended at the person who said I looked more than chubby, that is not how I feel myself and they are entitled to their opinion, after all I did ask. Personally I feel a bit heavier than I would like but healthy nevertheless. My metabolism seems to have slowed a lot since I hit 40 and so am starting to make time to exercise more. I eat well but don't exercise enough.

You can be a size 16, be fit and healthy (like my friend who does triathlons for fun) or a size 8 and very unhealthy (like another friend who smokes, eats junk and does no exercise).

I do worry that so many people are trying to live up to the superthin image that we see every where around us.

digerd · 25/10/2012 16:39

When my sister-in-law was 19, she was 4' 11" bust 38" waist 24" hips 38", she was very glamorous, strong and energetic. Ideal shape in those days - hour glass figure. And she still fitted into a size 12, due to small waist, and her bust was busting through her tops as was the sex-bomb female style of that time and skirts were full. All she didn't like was her height, as wanted longer legs. She looked gorgeous

AmberLeaf · 25/10/2012 17:08

I think your body shape makes a big difference.

If you are an apple you could look 'fat' in a 14 [depending on height] if you are an hour glass you would look curvy and as you would still go in at the waist you wouldnt necessarily be unhealthy.

I am amazed at the tall posters saying they are/would be fat if they were a size 14.

From what some have said here I am thinking body dysmorphia too.

Reminds of women I used to work with who were clearly far from fat who would pinch 1cm of skin and say 'im so fat' they were either fishing for compliments or suffering body dysmorphia.

Haberdashery · 25/10/2012 17:31

When I was a size 10 I used to get called too skinny and underweight (5.5 ft tall btw).

See, I'm 5.5 too and would be overweight at a size 10. My frame is really narrow.

KarenHL · 25/10/2012 17:35

I know what you mean. Many years ago I was in a branch of H&M (this is shortly after they first opened in the UK) and asked where I could find items for size 14 or over (as sizes are variable, so I like to try more than one size so I get the right fit).

I was directed to a rail of ... maternity wear! Being young and a bit vain I left not long after.

GobblersKnob · 25/10/2012 17:36

I am one of the tall ones Grin am 5'10" and a size 12 and I can grab whole bloody handfuls of fat, not just a little bit of skin.

I am a bit fat at a size 12, truly.

FreddyMcKruger · 25/10/2012 17:39

My god some people on this thread must have very high standards.

I'm 5'4 and 135lbs, I am a size 12. I'm not in any way skinny but I wouldn't say I was chubby. I'm in my early 30s and I have three DCs and I'm still smaller than most people I see whilst out on an average trip to the supermarket iykwim, I like my food.......and wine, I could drop ten and be firmer but I would have to be mega strict with myself.

AmberLeaf · 25/10/2012 17:40

I respect your personal opinion and...well you know you but I cant see a tall size 12 as fat?

Im one inch shorter than you Gobbler and if I was a 12 id hurt when I sat down!
