To think the 'stand your ground' law in America is horrendous.

I hope we never adopt that law which has led to an 8% increase in homicides in some American states.

I think the UK in general shies away from laws that encourage vigilantism - which is exactly what the SYG encourages.

So the fact that the Crown Prosecution Service in the UK says that Failure to Retreat (I.e. stand your ground) is not conclusive evidence that it isn't self defence and that deadly force can be deemed reasonable doesn't matter? The CPS website is incorrect?

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 16/10/2012 23:32

"..is not conclusive evidence that it is not self defence" on the CPS website does not equate to the "SYG law". We have no SYG here - you are allowed to use reasonable force in cases of self defence in the UK. It has always been the case.

In Florida the SYG law is criticised as 'shoot first'. There is no UK equivalent.

Should add that 'reasonable force' in the UK is very unlikely to be shooting an intruder- since our gun laws do not allow for just anyone to have a gun in the house.

The problem with stand your ground laws is that this sort of thing can happen:

And then there's the Adam Provencal case:
