to slightly judge nursery worker?

Okay I am probably ABU to judge her, but I think many of you might have....

There is a lady who works at DD's nursery who is rather pregnant. When I went to pick up DD I saw her walking away (the pregnant lady) at the end of her shift, smoking. She is about 7 months pregnant.

I don't have a problem at all with nursery staff smoking, up to them. But I did feel slightly odd about seeing a pregnant lady, who cares for children, smoking.

AIBU?

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack - how can you compare eating soft cheese to smoking?

Of course it's not advised to eat soft cheese when pregnant because it of the listeria that can cause problems.

Puffing on 1, 5 or 10 cigarettes a day WILL harm your baby. No matter how much idiots want to deny it and say 'oh my mum smoked with me when she was pregnant etc' it is dangerous, irresponsible and shameful!

Why the hell would you even risk causing your unborn baby harm?

Babies who's mothers smoke are at risk from -

  • low birth weight
  • smaller organs
  • poor lung function
  • twice as likely to die from cot death
  • taken into hospital on average 2 x more in the 1st 8 month of life
  • are more likely to get painful diseases such as inflammation of the middle ear and asthmatic bronchitis
  • are more likely to become smokers themselves in later years.

I can and will continue to judge those that smoke during pregnancy. I don't care if it's free will - I know I can't do anything about it but it doesn't mean that I don't think it's wrong.

LauraShigihara · 12/10/2012 11:51

Twenty-plus years ago, when I had my oldest one, I puffed away all through the pregnancy. Most pregnant women did or they certainly did in my town.

I gave up before getting up-duffed with number two and am a non-smoker, but I would say that Smoking The Fags is not as horrendous as you might think. Indeed, Eldest was a very healthy baby.

In the last few years, it has become a bit shocking to see anyone smoking as it is a much rarer sight now.

ksrwr · 12/10/2012 11:52

i will never understand how anyone can smoke while they're pregnant, i will never understand how anyone could knowingly harm a child. its as simple as that.

scrablet · 12/10/2012 11:52

Just wondering (and I did neither while PG) Is a glass of wine now and then, better or worse than an odd fag now and then? Why is the odd unit better than the odd fag? We really do not know the individual harm of either...

wannabedomesticgoddess · 12/10/2012 11:53

Betty, I just love my bacon. Thats all :)

WorraLiberty · 12/10/2012 11:54

bubalou smoking while pregnant MIGHT harm your baby. You can't say it will because you have no idea how many cigarettes the mother smokes.

I agree though, why take the risk?

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/10/2012 11:55

Bubalou - I am merely pointing out that there are many things pregnant women are advised not to do and was just wondering whether people are so quick to judge on every aspect or just the smoking.

Yes, of course smoking whilst pregnant is not recommended and there could be implications but as long as women are well informed what more can you do.

I fail to see whether smoking when pregnant can have an effect on your baby smoking in years to come, that is just ridiculous!!!

akaemmafrost · 12/10/2012 11:55

No it's none of my business.

Yes I would judge. It's wrong.

WorraLiberty · 12/10/2012 11:56

wannabe, eating bacon whilst pregnant is fine as long as it's not smoked Wink

bubalou · 12/10/2012 11:57

Studies are still unsure about drinking but the latest seem to think that light-to moderate drinking such as a couple of glasses a wine a week during pregnancy are fine.

There were some earlier studies that show drinking more then this can stunt a childs growth.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/10/2012 11:57

Worra - apparently it won't be smoked bacon if it's mum wasn't smoked before Grin

WorraLiberty · 12/10/2012 11:58

But Betty what about 2nd and 3rd hand bacon smoking?

pleasethanks · 12/10/2012 11:58

Yes, I accept it may have been the only fag she smoked during the pregnancy. Unlikely, but anyway....

But as a carer of children, even if you have thought about the implications of smoking whilst pregnant, and decided you will take the risk anyway, would you not think about how it might be viewed by the parents of the children who pay you to look after their children?

bushymcbush · 12/10/2012 11:58

Yanbu. I would have judged too. I gave up smoking the instant I knew I was pg with DC1. That was 5 years ago and I have never smoked since.

When DC2 was in SCBU after a prem birth, I used to see two of the other SCBU mums in the smoking shelter outside the hospital doors. They would then be straight back up in SCBU breathing their toxic fumes all over their tiny, vulnerable prem babies. I judged them.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/10/2012 12:00

Worra - I have no answer to that Hmm

Please - it was the end of her shift although she was a bit silly...she should have at least made sure she was out of sight first!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 12/10/2012 12:00

But why not smoked?

Or am I being fick and you are making a joke in the context of this thread?

Seriously. Are smoky bacon crisps out too now?

WorraLiberty · 12/10/2012 12:01

I don't see why the nursery worker would be worried about how parents view her when it comes to her own child?

The clue is in 'her own'.

How would the parents view her if she was putting her own child at risk by being overweight?

Would they care then even though they're paying her?

I get that they wouldn't want her smoking around their children, but what she does with her own is none of their business.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/10/2012 12:01

Wanna - eating crisps when pregnant is highly judged.........it means almost certainly that your baby will be a crisp addict. I will hoik my judgy pants up when I see a pregnant woman eating any sort of junk at all Grin

Dahlen · 12/10/2012 12:02

I once came across a woman about 8 months pregnant, drunk, smoking, and walking around a town centre after a good night out eating a kebab at 2.30am!

I did judge, I'm afraid. Her body, her choice and I resect it, but it doesn't stop me from thinking she was selfish. Smoking I can actually understand, because it's an addiction, but the rest of it... Hmm

Dahlen · 12/10/2012 12:02

respect

WorraLiberty · 12/10/2012 12:03

Calm down wanna I'm a fellow bacon addict and I was just joking.

A world without bacon is not one I want to be a part of...pregnant or not Shock

cheekydevil · 12/10/2012 12:04

Yes and log burners Grin

bubalou · 12/10/2012 12:04

Woral - every single cigarette you smoke when pregnant will harm your baby in some way - I'm sorry but that's just the way I see it. Maybe it's not fact - but nobody can say that it's untrue either. Ignorant people that smoke when pregnant just want to try to justify their selfish behaviour.

Fags contain 1000's of toxins that are exposed to the foetus every time the mother smokes.

When you smoke some of the oxygen in your blood is replaced by carbon monoxide. If a pregnant woman smokes, her blood and therefore her child's blood will contain less oxygen than normal. This causes some of the horrible problems I mentioned up-post.

There are loads of other side-effects such as placental abruption in later pregnancy which can cause the baby to be born premature, starved of oxygen or even die.

Why would you even risk it? SELFISH!!! Confused

I would have stuck needles in my eyes every day if I was told this is what I needed to do to make sure my baby was healthy. I don't claim to be a martyr or anything - I just wanted to do all that I could. Isn't that what being a mum is about?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 12/10/2012 12:04

Ofcourse Betty. I would never eat junk while pregnant :o

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/10/2012 12:04

It's got to be crispy though........and smoked!! And not the stuff that shrivells up to the size of a postage stamp either :)
