I don't drink at all. I agree with the findings of www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-19870190 this study. I'm guessing though that many mumsnetters will dislike hearing the truth?

As a nation we drink too much - it's as simple and horrible as that.

Why is it the assumption that all mnetters are 'middle class', who gives a shiny shite? Plus I don't drink!

expatinscotland · 08/10/2012 15:06

'expat its not a tit for tat argument.'

It's not an argument at all. It's someone using MN as a vehicle to boast about and congratulate themselves for no real reason.

ithinkimightbegoingmad · 08/10/2012 15:13

hot slate ....i dont think any one is lumping abusive alcoholic parents with anyone

but if a parent is an alcoholic then there is a massive probability for emotional harm to the children, whether the alcohol is drunk as wine over dinner or as Special Brew/ White Lightening

'I dont drink at all'. Bully for you!

Viviennemary · 08/10/2012 15:24

What's too much.

Wine Wine Wine Wine Wine and more Wine Wine

Toothiepeg · 08/10/2012 15:48

Would it be preferable if I lied and said I drank like a fish? I don't drink. This research doesn't personally impact on me at all. My parents didn't drink routinely either. Dh doesn't drink to excess. I am perfectly comfortable with this news. It's really interesting to see though, how aggressive some of you become at the suggestion that consumption of booze is NOT a universal good.

I couldn't care less who drinks and who doesn't, but my goat's becoming expensive to keep watered. I'm going to read him this article and see if he doesn't come to his senses.

HotSlate · 08/10/2012 15:55

"but if a parent is an alcoholic then there is a massive probability for emotional harm to the children, whether the alcohol is drunk as wine over dinner or as Special Brew/ White Lightening"

Er, yes I know. But equally, wine over dinner / a special brew a day down the park doesn't = alcoholic. And teetotal doesn't = non-abuser

Mrsjay · 08/10/2012 15:59

Im not middle class and I have spates of over indulging people of all classes drink too much it doesn't matter if it is wine G n T or superbrew people drink to excess sometimes

Mrsjay · 08/10/2012 16:00

Er, yes I know. But equally, wine over dinner / a special brew a day down the park doesn't = alcoholic. And teetotal doesn't = non-abuser

this really just because a parent drinks and infront of their children doesn't make it abusive as long as their children are safe

squoosh · 08/10/2012 16:02

God, but you're a bore.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 16:04

Toothie you are spectacularly missing the point of why your OP has caused the reponses it has.

Your OP was smug and self-congratulating as well as being very sneery and condescending (which is impressive as it was only short)

The article you linked to was very poor.

That's why. Not because people think alcholism is funny.

It's a bit like when people got all upset over the Brass Eye Paedophile episode saying it was mocking paedophilla. It wasn't - it was mocking the disgusting, sensationalist reporting of it.

Likewise, people are not mocking excessive drinking, they are mocking the articles poor research and lazy journalism. Along with mocking you due to the reasons I mentioned.

AHa I knew my favourite arguement come out.

Some of you are very defensive ......

This means nothing, a lot of the people disagreeing with you don't imbibe booze.

That point ALWAYs validates NOTHING.

Tailtwister · 08/10/2012 16:13

I recently had to take stock of the amount I was drinking. Truthfully? Probably 1-2 glasses of wine a night, with maybe one or two nights a week not drinking at all. It became a 'necessary' part of my day. A signal to wind down, the start of my evening and time to relax. It came to a head when I felt irritated that DH had forgotten the wine on the shopping list and I made a special trip to go out to purchase some. Made me think a bit.

I know plenty of people who drink the same and in a lot of cases more than I did.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/10/2012 16:14

What I am struggling with OP why you think not drinking is an achievement or something to be proud of?

I don't drink, its not difficult. I've never had to battle a mysterious force dragging me towards the pinot grigio in the supermarket as I manfully (womanfully Hmm) struggle to wrest the trolley in the direction of the teabags.

Bad research and lazy journalism doesn't magically become proven fact just because it supports your particular point of view.

Mrsjay · 08/10/2012 16:17

Just because a person is tee total doesn't give them the moral high ground does it , Confused I am comfortable with what I drink alcohol isn't universally bad either

ClippedPhoenix · 08/10/2012 16:19

I know a lot of upper/middleclass people with very ruddy complexions Grin

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 16:19

Ahh, but MrsJay, you forget the OP not only doesn't drink but is also very middle class

Therefore she is a paragon and much better than the rest of us Grin
