I don't drink at all. I agree with the findings of www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-19870190 this study. I'm guessing though that many mumsnetters will dislike hearing the truth?

As a nation we drink too much - it's as simple and horrible as that.

I read the report - the findings seemed very muddled and there was a lack of detailed evidence to support any of the conclusions reached. Read like the work of a first year sociology student with a bee in their bonnet.

Btw I drank loads more pre-children when I was working in the city and going out binge drinking Blush Now I drink more often, but very rarely more than one glass.

Tweasels · 08/10/2012 14:20

Will nobody think of the children.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 14:25

I find the flippancy of the "research" in the article distasteful and worrying.

Each to their own

I just dont think alcoholism and the effect it has on families and children is a joking matter woozley, no matter how lame this particular bit of research is

And this thread...is kinda proving OPs point..that alcohol misuse amongst the middle classes is not taken seriously

FunnysInLaJardin · 08/10/2012 14:28

every now and again something along these lines is reported on the BBC. They've covered young drinkers, old drinkers and now MC parents. Not much left then, that's most of the UK population. So in conclusion, most of the UK drink too much. They could have covered that far more succinctly

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 14:29

Crappy, badly written articles based on flawed research should never be taken seriously. Regardless class.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 14:30

*Regardless of class

Woozley · 08/10/2012 14:30

As a nation we drink too much - it's as simple and horrible as that.

There are plenty of problem drinkers, on different parts of the scale, but "as a nation" we in fact drink a LOT less alcohol than we used to.

Even young people. The media were calling teenagers "boring" last week as this generation is less likely to smoke, drink, take drugs and want to do things like get married and have children. They (in particular) can't win.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 14:31

Oh, and ditto that for smug OPs

Tweasels · 08/10/2012 14:31

The flippancy is due to the OP being goading in nature and us not rising to it. It is a poorly written article based on very poor evidence and just a bit of a non story. It's nothing new.

If the OP had said - look at this article AIBU to think that the research behind this is a bit weak or AIBU to worry that I am one of the people the article is referring to or any other reasonable question. We wouldn't be flippant, but as essentially the OP has used the story to have the usual yawn yawn all mumsnetters are MC dig and also call us alcoholics, I think we are being rather pleasant.

Now, I must finish this can of special brew before I do the school run.

hokeycakey · 08/10/2012 14:33

Yes agreed what is this article actually saying? I'm not sure "I think drinking is bad... Some people do it, most people don't, their kids might get in an accident" etc etc

Agreed very lazy journalism with no real point

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 08/10/2012 14:33

are you joking many will love it

gives them yet another chance to inform others yet again that they are middle class :) and add to the debate of course
