I don't drink at all. I agree with the findings of www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-19870190 this study. I'm guessing though that many mumsnetters will dislike hearing the truth?

As a nation we drink too much - it's as simple and horrible as that.

You put apple in hot Pimms.

GhostofMammaTJ · 08/10/2012 21:04

I honestly do not think that my drinking a bottle of wine once my DC are in bed has any impact on them whatsoever.

If you OP in your very smugness could prove me wrong then I would stop my 4 nights a week of relaxation.

missorinoco · 08/10/2012 21:07

People drink more since having children? I have less money, time and alcohol tolerance. Chance would be a fine thing.

Middle class (self in this category) probably do drink too much, so does lower class and upper class, entire nation drinks too much overall. Middle class possibly doesn't realise it as a couple of glasses a night (vaguely remember those days) mounts up and takes you over your limit unless you have alcohol free days each week. No idea what the upper class drinks, and the lower class seems to get blamed for everything in the press, so is caricatured with drinking too much.

It's not new news though, middle class drinking, it's been done before.
As for making yorkies under the influence [stuck out tongue emoticum], I can't make them sober.

YEAH JUST LIKE MY HEAD AFTER I'VE HAD FIVE GLASSES GrinGrin

ilovemyteddies · 08/10/2012 21:21

Actually, I wish I still COULD drink five glasses of anything Sad. My dirty little secret is although I still see myself as the hard living sporty type I was at university, I've hit the age and life stage where I actually struggle to have the energy to maintain any vices at all.

I'm in an industry where we're meant to be spraying expensive champagne round the walls with every deal made, yet when I'm on business trips, we're ALL like "yes, I'm taking a McDonalds back to my room and surfing the Net and seeing a late night film, superb".

My DH is the same - he was showing me a slightly flirtatious e-mail from his secretary, and he was like "fuck me, I can barely summon the energy to keep one woman satisfied, let alone two".

sommewhereelse · 08/10/2012 21:26

This is a rather silly thread so I'm not sure it's the best place to really address the issues.

But I've had a good giggle reading and now no need for a glass of wine to help me chill out after a wearing day.

I don't dispute that drinking too much can affect adversely affect your parenting.

But does anyone with moderate drinking, middle class parents think that they suffered as a result when they were growing up? I certainly didn't.

spookytoo · 08/10/2012 21:30

I am in the US and have been to two celebration type days lately, one the company BBQ and another the local town annual parade thing.

At the BBq one or two lads looked, late in the afternoon, as if they had had a few beers too many but there was no aggro or bad language (naturally as it was a family day) and no one was drinking at the parade as it's illegal to drink in the street. And it was really nice family fun.

In the Uk I live in Scotland and the local town annual parade thing starts early ie the pubs open at 9am and stay open all day so by parade time there are a few drunks fing and blinding and loud mouthed oiks hailing each other across teh street, regardles of small kiddies. Roll on to evening and many are totally ratarsed and families would be mad to approach town centre.

Other celebrations always involve booze and lots of it.

US drink laws are draconian but I think we could tighten up ours to make towncentres friendlier places.

Popumpkin · 08/10/2012 21:34

Yawn. There's nothing as lower class as declaring yourself to be middle class.

Now, where's my Wine.

spookytoo · 08/10/2012 21:34

Back to the OP.

I am middle class and probably drink too much in the evening to reach a ripe old age (probably will affect my liver eventually) but can shake my head disapprovingly at those who drink in the evening depsite small DCs upstairs as no one seemed to drink as much when mine were small Grin or we just couldn't afford the booze!

spookytoo · 08/10/2012 21:36

I read teh Telegraph and v v v occasionally the Daily Mail so I must be middle class.

Popumpkin · 08/10/2012 21:43

I don't read a newspaper as they all seem entirely biased. No idea what that says about me! Grin

LordFlasheart · 08/10/2012 21:48

How do you make winter Pimms please? I have half a bottle and i have to think me alcohol being uselessly wasted.

LordFlasheart · 08/10/2012 21:49

...hate to think of alcohol being wasted

LordFlasheart · 08/10/2012 21:53

and i honestly think this is the result of a competition to post the most provocative OP ever, the wording is spot on.

Viperidae · 08/10/2012 22:04

It's a shame this has been raised as a class issue. spookytoo makes some good points.

I will happily enjoy alchohol with friends (and not always in moderation) but am concerned at its effects in society as a whole.

dinkystinky · 08/10/2012 22:09

I dont think I necessarily drink more since having kids - its just my drinking rather than being a couple of big nights a week is spread out over the course of a week....

ilovemyteddies · 08/10/2012 22:12

@ LordFlasheart

I'm guessing its summer Pimms No. 1 you've got leftover rather than the specific Winter Pimms? It's based on gin, Winter Pimms is based on brandy.

If so, I'd go for hot ginger ale with a few slices of oranges in for luck.

(if it's the Winter Cup you've got - will say on bottle - same but with hot apple juice and slices of apples as well as the oranges)

Serve it before dinner/food, give the guests more time to get tiddly and let conversation flow Grin
