I don't drink at all. I agree with the findings of www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-19870190 this study. I'm guessing though that many mumsnetters will dislike hearing the truth?

As a nation we drink too much - it's as simple and horrible as that.

Will somebody please lead me away from this thread?

I don't often show my snark.

Sad
WilfredToadflax · 08/10/2012 14:02

Chaos - I have a very lovely gp friend who downs a bottle a night, but excuses it as not being hard drinking, because it is wine, not spirits.

I don't imagine for one second she doesn't think it counts, but its perceived as civilised, and is therefore fine.

Oh, and FYI, no food has calories if eaten standing up, so there!

More depressing is the BBC's complete inability to write an article that isnt trite and bollocks.

"The arrival of children seems to have led more parents to drink more, with one in six increasing consumption after the birth of a baby."

Firstly, what does "more parents to drink more" even mean? Secondly, if one in six parents drink more, that means that around 83% of people drink the same or less when they become parents.

It pisses me off that I have to spend money on my license fees to fund this shirt when I could be spending it on booze.

Tweasels · 08/10/2012 14:04

Is mumsnet the voice of the middle classes? Why would mumsnetters "dislike hearing the truth"?

Maybe I don't understand because I'm working class but I quite like hearing the truth.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 08/10/2012 14:04

shirt=shit. Can't type. Too pissed.

Clargo55 · 08/10/2012 14:05

I also do not drink any alcohol, but cannot see how class has anything to do with it.

Excessive drinking has been too normalised in the UK imo.
Yabu for thinking its only the middle class who drink too much.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 14:06

I can't handle the truth

GoSakuramachi · 08/10/2012 14:06

Why? Do you think we are all idiots who can't count how many glasses of wine we drink? Hmm

sugarice · 08/10/2012 14:07

I drink a lot and I'm not middle class.

I don't want to live til I'm 100, I will die of something be it cancer, heart attack ,a stroke or some other horrible illness. These illnesses may be exacerbated by alcohol or not.

I'll take my chances in this current shitty world that we live in but thanks for your concern. Cheers. Wine

Tweasels · 08/10/2012 14:07

I'm not convinced by these findings. i can see that parenting judgement could easily be impacted by excessive consumption of alcohol - but it's a big leap to draw a conclusion that everyone who drinks will be necessarily be adversely affecting their children - i don't know any parents who would drink to excess in front of their children, I certainly wouldn't. I might occasionally have a single glass of wine at their tea time if we have friends over, but more usually I have a glass after they are in bed. I think the involvement of family alcohol misuse Services may be skewing the results somewhat.

I'm not suggesting for a moment that alcohol misuse is not a problem, simply that drinking per se is not necessarily a problem as long as it is within recommended guidelines.

Ciske · 08/10/2012 14:13

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet. One of the surveys that supports this research was done on Netmums, that well known bunch of middle class alcoholics.

catgirl1976 · 08/10/2012 14:14

Ahhh Netmums.

Drinking their MC White Lightening..............
