I have had enough of Phillip sodding Schofield and his apologist attitude towards Jimmy Savile

Angry

Last week, it was saying how sorry he felt for JS's family to the VICTIMS of JS fgs, basically saying that he knew the layout of the dressing rooms at the BBC and he can't imagine that happening and no-one seeing and now, just, he said "But that's what television and radio was like in those days"

Errr, no Phil. Rape/molestation has ALWAYS been wrong, you daft twat. Yes, they were sexist times but there is a world of difference between sexual assaults on underage girls and sexist banter/inequality in the workplace.

And you have young daughters IIRC, Phillip. Shame on you.

OP posts:
SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/10/2012 15:27

It does have to change - and the only way that is going to happen is if people talk about it.

As I mentioned on one of the other threads, I know someone who was abused by JS and his nasty circle of friends. I have an awful feeling that JS, GG and the BBC are going to take the fall for this, and all the other culprits will remain blameless.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 08/10/2012 15:31

Can I humbly ask you all to go and look at this thread

I am quite sad it only has 5 posts on it, but JS and PS have all this attention.

What JS did was appaling, and the cover up makes it even worse, I really really feel for his victims, who could not speak out.... but it has made me think more about wrapping in cotton wool protecting my own daughter.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/10/2012 15:41

Seconding Norma's thread suggestion. I don't have children at school, so don't have anything to offer to the thread, but I do like the idea of those parents who do writing to schools to highlight the problem and ask what they do about it.

MrsjREwing · 08/10/2012 15:44

In my experience with schools recently, rather than school doing something about it, you will become a labelled parent.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/10/2012 15:47

I heard an interview on Radio 4 last week, with a woman DJ (I think it was Janice Long, but I could well be wrong), who was the first female DJ on Radio 1. In her early days she was partnered with JS on his show, and apparently he behaved very inappropriately towards her - sexist comments etc and touching her up. Apparently he would wait until she was live on air and then touch her up, knowing that she couldn't react or protest because she was live on air.

This is bad enough, but she also said that when she complained to someone in management, she was told, "What's the matter - don't you like it? Are you a lesbian?" My impression from the interview was that was as far as she took it with trying to complain about JS - basically it silenced her.

If this was the reaction from BBC management to a complaint about JS from an adult employee, I can well imagine that the reaction to a complaint from a teenager, especially from a disturbed background, would be even worse, and that such a person would find it nigh impossible to push ahead with a complaint in the face of such an attitude.

cocolepew · 08/10/2012 15:57

Liz Kershaw has came out and said she was groped live on air, but she didn't say who by. Sandi Toskvig complained in the 80's about inappropriate touching and remarks, at the BBC, and was laughed at.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 08/10/2012 15:59

SDTG - Wasn't it Liz Kershaw? I don't think she has named who assaulted her. Mike Smith was on Radio 5 being an arse about it earlier.

WhyTheBigGoldPaws · 08/10/2012 15:59

SDTG - I heard that interview, it was Liz Kershaw IIRC. The 'Don't you like it, are you a lesbian?' comment says an awful lot about what attitudes were like then - I really hope that's not the case now but who knows.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 08/10/2012 16:01

When you look back at 70s/80s episodes of things like TOTP, it is shocking how often the male presenter sort of grabs the female presenter or performer to him and holds tight, whilst she looks awkward and smiles nervously. Absolute routine behaviour.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/10/2012 16:09

Yes - I'm sure you are right and it was Liz Kershaw (I have the memory span of an amnesiac goldfish at the moment Blush).

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 08/10/2012 16:41

Ive just seen these two tweets from Emily Glenister. Dont know how to do a screenshot so have written it down.

Tweet 1.
Oh ppl come on @Schofe clearly isnt making excuses Hes totally right about it all being different in the "70s.

Tweet 2.
Youve got to be genuinely thick to think thats what @Schofe was implying. #useyourbrain.

Geninely stunned to see these tweets.

halloweeneyqueeney · 08/10/2012 16:59

there's be 3 kinds of people at the BBC who had some cross over at work with JS:

  1. the ones who merrily turned a blind eye and went with "the way things are done round here" for the sake of bettering their career, or worse, because they were also taking advantage of it themselves
  2. the ones who were aware of wrongs and perhaps victims of it themselves but were silenced and bullied and stuck between a rock and a hard place and will be glad that things might become more transparent now
  3. A small few who genuinely didn't realise

PS is making him sound like he falls into catagory no1 TBH

UltraBOF · 08/10/2012 17:11

I was disturbed watching the Exposure documentary that the two men interviewed who saw Savile with young girls seemed very blasé about it.

ScrambledSmegsEvilTwin · 08/10/2012 17:15

Who is Emily Glenister? She sounds hopelessly naive, at best.

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 08/10/2012 17:18

daughter of Amanda Redman.

SwedishEdith · 08/10/2012 17:35

Good Lord, just heard Mike Smith whining on the news. Does he want Liz Kershaw gagged or something? Shock

DreamsTurnToGoldDust · 08/10/2012 17:51

See the problem I have is, the men who were actively working at the BBC during this time who are now whining, makes me wonder why.

NigellasGuest · 08/10/2012 17:51

I also heard Mike Smith, on Richard Bacon's show. What a prat. Apparently lots of people texted in about what he said but I had to stop listening so didn't get to hear people's responses.

MrsjREwing · 08/10/2012 17:53

It sounds like the game is up for the middle aged and baby boomer BBC men, they no likie.

windsurf74 · 08/10/2012 17:58

Things were different back then though...remember Bill Wyman and 13 year old Mandy Smith? I was about 11 at the time. Remember thinking, omg, is that what teenagers are supposed to do?

Disgraceful and shocking.

squoosh · 08/10/2012 17:59

Bill Wyman refers to thatrather glibly as his 'mid life crisis'. I wonder how Mandy Smith refers to it. Hmm

DreamsTurnToGoldDust · 08/10/2012 18:12

I read an article on Mandy Smith some time ago, and it said that she (and I`m not quoting, just remembering) has had a lot of MH problems since that period and has had major life problems because of it, I remember just feeling incrediably sad reading it.

Another point, there is something rather sickening listening to these middle aged men justifying that time, if woman, ie Liz Kershaw, Sandy Togsvic etc are saying they were groped, felt uncomfortable about it, then decent men would agree with them and say yes it was awful and yes it did happen and we must do all that we can to make sure this never happens again.

Maybe these men were held up too much as demi gods, some still are, that needs to change. I mean, just taking PS as an example, hes just a presenter, not a font of all knowledge, but he is adored by millions.

notmeatthemo2012 · 08/10/2012 18:20

Im disappointed to hear Phillip Schofield is acting like that. I believe what the victims are saying. Thats like saying why years later did all the people come out with what was happening with priests. They couldnt have come out with that all them years ago, things are changed now for the better.

BupcakesAndHaunting · 08/10/2012 18:24

There's also some Pip Arselick on Twitter telling him about this thread!

Hi Phil, if you're reading! I'm sure you don't mean to come across as a rape apologist, but errrrr, you totes are.

OP posts:
edam · 08/10/2012 18:27

Philip Schofield isn't that bright. He's a kid's TV presenter who got lucky. Instead of being extremely grateful for his luck, he chooses to make inane comments about a serious subject. Tosser.
