AIBU?

to think leggings on their own is ridiculous

as they are basically a form of tights worn under a skirt or long top. Not worn as trousers like I see so much of, particularly teens or young students. My daughter has taken to this recently but its her choice, I have bigger battles to pick.

I suppose the false jeans kind make a BIT of sense but I still don't get it.

You think leggings are bad - I had to face a woman wearing watch looked like 40 den tights the other day - complete with turquoise knickers - and a cropped top. And YES they were definately tights - ugh!

Do these people know their underwear is visible? I'm sure it's a mistake for some people but is it some kind of fashion statement? Confused Otherwise wouldn't they have realised?

I think they can only be worn with a tunic or long top. Just looks like they haven't got dressed otherwise. But then I don't think leggings and short tops look nice on little girls either.

I hate leggings, whether with short tops or long ones, so wouldn't wear them myself.
I don't really care if other people wear them though, I'm sure I look ridiculous to many people too Grin

YADNBU. Now that thicker ones that don't show all are becoming popular I'm not minding them as such, it is mainly the really thin ones I dislike. Why do you want the world to see your underwear?! Or lack of it!

Sports shops tend to do some decent, thick and warm leggings and they are very handy for climbing and yoga according to my climbing partner!

Yes, I lived in ski pants, boots and long baggy (very naff), black and bright coloured jumpers as a student.

I'd completely forgotten we tended to call leggings with stirrups ski pants.

In the 80s leggings didn't have lycra and used to get massive knee shapes in them which didn't look good. I think that no matter how thick the leggings and no matter how perfect the figure , they need the bum covered. There was a mum on the nursery pickup who had a great figure and thick leggings, but her camel toe did not look good. I just don't want to see the exact shape of someone's arse cheeks, no matter how perfect that arse is!

I wore leggings with fairly short tops as a teenager in the late 80s and early 90s. They did have Lycra in them but they were also much thicker. Yes, you could see all the bumps, etc but they were not see-through. They were also more expensive - you couldn't buy really cheap ones then.

I think the problem now is that a lot of people buy the really cheap ones, and obviously don't have a mirror.... Quite a few times I have been so tempted to say "do you realise that everyone can see your pants???"

They still sell the thick 90's style leggings that I remember my mum used to wear, isn't that what they call tregging's?

I wish she hadn't given them all away to charity now. In fact I wish she hadn't given a lot of stuff away to charity now Sad

The worst leggings I have seen have to be these hareem leggings

They were definitely much thicker in the old days Grin. I could wear them with a short top and there was no knickers peeking through. I rocked the Max Wall look as well!

DD (6) has very, very long legs and has loads of leggings (partly because normal trousers just look very puffy on her very slim legs). However, DW always intended her to wear them with dresses over the top. This morning she went out with just a top and leggings on and she looked like a runner bean....so slim and the look just made her look like a pencil line!

When women used to wear them in the 1980s wasn't the trend to wear them with Breton tops and the like? They looked okay then IMHO, but this trend to wearing them with very skimpy, short jumpers/tops and a short jacket (which leaves the bottom exposed) is just bleuh

Hmmm... for myself, no.

For DD1 and 2 (24 and 16) , they look delightful however they wear them.

Lesson may be to teach our children to wear matching underwear under thinner clothes?

lol at the 'Max Wall' look. That brings back memories as my Dad used to say that I looked like him when I wore leggings with Doc Martens (and had sparrow legs).

I agree though that leggings back in the 80s were much thicker and you couldn't see your pants through them unless you bought really cheap ones.

DD was scarred for life recently when she saw a neighbour with leggings and a short waist length top bend over and pick something up as we were walking past -we had a great view of her size 20 floral granny style pants through the leggings!

YANBU- I wear them as tights under skirts or dresses.
I'll wear them alone at home, with a vest top, for exercising or as PJ's but wouldn't dream of heading out on the streets with my arse andoften lack of knickers on show.

Maybe this //www.smoothgroovecommunity.com should be sold next to the leggings in shops :)

I used to live in leggings, huge jumpers and Doc Martens when I was late teens and early 20s. I looked really good in them, tbh, and am glad I carped the bloody diem. I can say that now, looking down at the wreck that is my late babies body! Grin

I like seeing young people wearing clothes that celebrate their all-too-fleeting gorgeousness. Let 'em enjoy it while they can!

I am pregnant and live in my leggings at the minute. Its been since 37 weeks and everything else is so uncomfortable. I look pretty shit and stupid but I so don't care at the minute haha. yanbu!

Worse when I see older women (my age) wear them.

I think it's ok with long jumpers or T-shirts, or short dresses.

I've just started to wear them again with dresses and motorbike boots. God but they're comfy.

I don't wear leggings. I do however wear 100 denier tights with black short shorts and a normal length top. It's the best of both worlds - I'm pretty much completely covered up but can still move incredibly freely. The problem reality is that people think I am wearing tights as leggings. Do I care? Not really, no.

And for the starers (of which there are many!), I can assure you that I am wearing shorts and my knickers aren't visible, no matter how hard you crane your necks Grin might also have something to do with my g-string fetish

I typed into google 'what to wear with leggings' and this link came up! I've read through and it seems a good percentage of people on here are total fascists on the matter! people can wear/say/act/look/talk however they like!!!! as long as you are not physically or mentally hurting anyone, NOTHING you are doing is wrong! there is nothing wrong with wearing leggings as "pants" (as they say in America land) and it also doesn't matter what size you are! if said person feels comfortable, sexy, warmer, cuter, more confident or for any other reason wearing leggings, it is up to them and no one else! they should in return, not be made to feel bad or disgusting or "cheap" as so many of you lot seem to imply for doing so!!! this has really pi*ed me off, how people can be such bi*hes about a subject that really does have any relevance to them and doesn't (or at least shouldn't) effect their lives in any way, shape or form!

I was wanting to know what to wear with leggings because my girlfriend recently got some as she has gained some confidence to wear them after loosing a bit of weight! she is still a size 14 but would really like to wear them now! she would however like something that covered up her front "parts" and a bit of her bottom (only due to confidence issues, not because it is wrong to not do i may add) so was looking for tops that might be slightly longer at the front than the back. All i found was people bitching about how leggings are not trousers/pants....well, they kind of or totally are!

i'm not a huge fan of dresses with big cut outs in the side but they are still dresses!! and people can wear them if they like...makes no difference to my life at all! I don't really like turned up jeans but they're still jeans! and again...go for it if you like!

sorry to all the people on here who are not slagging people off for the clothes they decide to wear...well done for just being a kind person! also, i notice this is an OLD thread so sorry for resurrecting it but it cropped up on google and i felt something needed to be said!

people...get about your own lives...wear whatever makes you happy...

To be honest, they look fine if the wearer has a good figure & they are decent quality.

I don't like the bitchy tone of the majority of the posts on this thread.

Not ridiculous it's personal taste doesn't bother me what others wear. , I've just never liked them and never had a pair. I can think of some situations where it would be practical dance lessons, yoga? Long or short top doesn't bother me as long as it's not on my body.

I think I bought one outfit for my girls with leggings and then I regretted it, I just don't like them, can't explain why. they're not tights and they're not trousers they're confused .

Ppl forget some leggings are sheer some opaque. If you get the wrong size and stretch um up they can reveal more than expected. I have seen two mums on school run short top and leggings could see her underwear. I didn't have a heart to tell them, they came across a bit rough, I didn't want any trouble lol.

I remember my sis wearing leggisn with long tshirts and jumpers early 90s looked cool, still didn't temp me to wear it.

well im okay with it if you have the figure go ahead if not please dont wear overtight panties with see through leggings and a crop top then glare at me when i say oh dear lord (unfortunately loudly) i have sleep deprivation some mornings and my mouth works on its own! seriously though we have a lass whose child goes to the same school as mine she wears leggings no panties and a short top fine even after three kids she has a great figure but why does she not wax first? i really didn't want to see her short and curlies (ever) she walked by me in a toddler group leant around me to get to something and practically stuffed herself in my face i turned away and the lady next to me commented that poor child can't afford panties or a razor! we spent ten minutes giggling like school kids!! apparently lack of sleep affects more people than i thought Grin
