To think it's ok to call the toilet a bog?

I've called it the bog for as long as I can remember. When I met my ex he'd always called it the bog too so we brought the kids up saying bog. Even my new boyfriend calls it the bog!!

DS(11) has just received a detention today for telling his teacher that he was on his way to the bog. This follows a detention he got yesterday for leaving a bottle cap on his table.

AIBU to think both detentions were rather harsh??

Detention for bottle cap is harsh.

But saying bog to a teacher....? I'd think by 11 you should know that's not ok.

I got a detention once - I was asked why I was carrying a cup in the corridor, apparently replying that I was taking it to the bin was 'impertinent'

Bog is fine, I say it all the time, perhaps you should teach him WC or lavatory specifically for school?

I got a detention once for "being cheeky" when a teacher said my brown patterned hairband was a bit OTT for the school photo and I said "but it was this one or my bright pink one"

They do sound a bit detention happy. Perhaps it would've been better if he'd said 'going to the bog Sir,' (or Miss obv).

Bog isn't acceptable in this house, and I would correct any child they called it that! Not sure it warranted a detention though!

I'm guessing he didn't go right the way through primary school saying "please can i go to the bog?". He'll have been corrected and told to say toilet or lavatory or wc. So presumably he knew he was being disrespectful....maybe trying to look 'cool' in front of new classmates?

On its own it doesn't seem that bad but we don't know that's all he was doing and well done to the teacher for stamping out that kind of disrespectful behaviour early on.

yabu sorry. It's just not a nice phrase and I can understand why he got a detention for it.

Bog is ok slang indoors and amongst friends I suppose but I wouldn't say it at work so I wouldn't accept my child saying it at school.

Not sure why "bog" is not acceptable but "toilet" is . Just because a word is widely used doesn't mean it's ok with everyone.

You can use bog if you want to but it isn't very nice, iyswim? Different words belong to different places. It's not a swear word but slang and perhaps slang shouldn't be used with teachers?

It's an awful word and sounds utterly common. It's such a gutteral sound and I honest think that's why many people dislike it, myself included. I'd feel ashamed if my child used that word at school!

Cor, imagine if Kate Middleton had said "bog" to the Queen!

Not one of my favourite terms for the lavatory, but each to their own! I'd be tempted to have a word with the teacher and ask for a breakdown of their detention policy so you can better understand how and why punishments are handed out for using words like 'bog'.

Well you wouldn't get far saying bog in our house.

It sounds horrible and I'd be mortified if my children said it anywhere.

I've just asked DS. He said no one at his school says 'bog' and when I asked why he screwed his nose up and said "well just cos".

But seriously, loo is far better than bog. Bog isn't a pleasant word and I am far too posh to say toilet I am surprised it is detention worthy though. And as for the bottle cap, well, words fail me.
