To think it's ok to call the toilet a bog?

I've called it the bog for as long as I can remember. When I met my ex he'd always called it the bog too so we brought the kids up saying bog. Even my new boyfriend calls it the bog!!

DS(11) has just received a detention today for telling his teacher that he was on his way to the bog. This follows a detention he got yesterday for leaving a bottle cap on his table.

AIBU to think both detentions were rather harsh??

My Dad always called it 'the library'.

UdderlyBanal · 02/10/2012 21:22

I'm with Debrett's. I am now worried I am horribly old fashioned. I am 45. We have a loo, with a loo seat, loo paper and a loo brush. I also regularly call it a lavatory. Toilet is not a word I encourage. I say bog but I relish the vulgarity of it. It's certainly vernacular and not a "school" word. I do enjoy using words like "bog" and "piss" once the kids are in bed, and to annoy my husband but I would expect school to clamp down on them Grin.

Mellower · 02/10/2012 21:27

I don't even like the {insert word} brush

but

My son has a erm.... {insert a proper word} problem so the {insert word} needs to be scrubbed with something sometimes but tbh I think they are horrid, they smell, they have germs, so I may just start scrubbing with my erm {please find me something I am allowed to use on MN}.

WelshMaenad · 02/10/2012 21:51

Do those who object to 'toilet' also dislike 'toiletries'? Curious.

UdderlyBanal · 02/10/2012 21:59

Toiletries is a truly vile word. I have had to wash my mouth out with a glug of wine.

Sparklingbrook · 02/10/2012 22:05

Don't look Shock

SelfRighteousPrissyPants · 02/10/2012 22:05

Oh dear it looks like I shouldn't have told my 4 year old the t**t roll was bog roll this afternoon then!

My Nan used to say she was 'visiting my aunt' , is that acceptable?

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 02/10/2012 22:07

He probably sounded like he was being cheeky....I would think it cheeky tbh.

Dawndonna · 02/10/2012 22:10

Doing ones toilet is completely different to using the lavatory.

Mellower · 02/10/2012 22:11

Sparklingbrook please stop this, so they also use the T word! Shock

So after a little walk to woods and a cold erm... bottom? and sitting on "nettles" no, woods are not good.

I may tray the drains in the streets next time I go for a thingamyjig!

Mellower · 02/10/2012 22:12

I may also try

SammyTheSwedishSquirrel · 02/10/2012 22:14

It's eau de toilette that freaks me out. Why would you want to spray yourself with aroma of shithouse?

Sparklingbrook · 02/10/2012 22:22

Arf Grin

lilachair · 02/10/2012 22:26

*toilette.

It's not toilet. It's different.

cat · 02/10/2012 22:27

And never, ever leave your toothbrush in the bog.

Or you will end up with someone else's poo particles on your teeth.

Fo sho.

My bog is in my bathroom. I would love a downstairs bog. When we were on holiday the house had 3 bogs-it was bogtastic. Grin

There's nothing like your own bog though. Public bogs tend to be minging.

RubyFakeNails · 02/10/2012 22:33

I'm Shock DH and I always thought bog was 'posh peoples' slang, only the very middle class I know use it. Bog or Loo.

We say T**t or Kazi.

However the worst I've heard is an ex-colleague who was 'just off for a tinkle in the ladies' YUCK.

rainbowweaver · 02/10/2012 22:34

A bog's just a wetland surely Grin

Sparklingbrook · 02/10/2012 22:39

Oooh Bog snorkelling

Bunbaker · 02/10/2012 22:46

I haven't heard anyone using that term for years. I think it is very much a slang word and not really anything you would expect to hear at school.
It ranks alongside "going for a slash/crap" for vulgarity.

And what is the MN hatred for the word toilet? I live in South Yorkshire and there is no snobbery about that word. We tend to say loo or toilet in our house and so do most people I know.

Binkyridesagain · 02/10/2012 22:49

Has no one mentioned 'Little girls room' or the 'Little boys room'?

Mellower · 02/10/2012 22:54

Binky thank you!!

I need a thingymajig but idea where to do it, of course "the little girls room" BUT I am not a litle girl, so can I use the "little girls room" please let me go somewhere to have a thingymyjig!

No shit on my toothbrush Grin Too funny for my childish mind.

See I tend to use another thing to lean the loo with but sadly lots of Mnetters started ganging up on me for using even that. Starts with B ends in h, I think as I never ever ever use this anymore lie

Mellower · 02/10/2012 22:56

CLEAN not lean on loo/little girls room/T word, bog/power room/woods, drains.

Mellower · 02/10/2012 22:56

Oh blast now I am dropping/losing letters
