To think it's ok to call the toilet a bog?

I've called it the bog for as long as I can remember. When I met my ex he'd always called it the bog too so we brought the kids up saying bog. Even my new boyfriend calls it the bog!!

DS(11) has just received a detention today for telling his teacher that he was on his way to the bog. This follows a detention he got yesterday for leaving a bottle cap on his table.

AIBU to think both detentions were rather harsh??

I didn't think so usual but I may be wrong.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 02/10/2012 20:23

I loathe 'toilet', 'WC' and 'lavatory' - the first sounds a bit basic and somehow clinical (not sure how/why), the others just sound twee, for people who don't like talking about bodily functions. 'Loo', 'lav', 'bog' and 'khazi' all fine Grin.

Detention for saying that seems way OTT, even if one has a personal dislike of the word.

I will instruct the DS to call it 'the shitter' from now on I think. Save upsetting anyone. Wink

SammyTheSwedishSquirrel · 02/10/2012 20:25

no but i would tell them to ignore the instruction to use that word and to feel free to inform the teacher (not in front of other children) that there mother conciders the word to be very vulgar and they shouldnt use it.obviously i would make it clear that they do so politly.

To which the teacher would reply, 'but your mother is not here, I am and I am in charge and set the rules of what is acceptable here and here's a detention to reinforce the point and to teach you that answering back in future is not acceptable'. :o

Bog is okay at home - it is a jokey term, but not appropriate for school. A bit like arse...

Loo, bathroom or mens/ladies room.

Toilet would result in a bollocking here.

lilachair · 02/10/2012 20:28

Bog shudder

It's a horrible word. Sorry. We say toilet. The DDs still say bathroom as a US hangover, and it grates but it's habit.

Occasionally I find myself uttering the terribly middle class loo...

It's a MINEFIELD.

cat · 02/10/2012 20:28

Toilet is gross.

What Debretts says

(But my nanny always said loo was vulgar. Just goes to show.)

Sparklingbrook · 02/10/2012 20:30

A bollocking for saying toilet? Confused How do you order a new bathroom without saying toilet? Or a toilet seat or toilet paper or a toilet brush?

OMG Shock

Mellower · 02/10/2012 20:35

No bogs we really should try to make DC speak properly, well maybe not we, but I must try to teach my DC as I cannot understand them anymore... toilet works fine or loo (at home) not bog though, I don't like bog, even though I used it for about 20 years! Confused

Slang word.

Not a dentention though......little OTT Teacher having a bad day? Possibly also needing on a pee pee or wee wee or a piss.

SammyTheSwedishSquirrel · 02/10/2012 20:36

I'm confused by the bollocking for 'toilet' too. That's what it is. That's where I'm going. Confused

DontmindifIdo · 02/10/2012 20:36

Nope, bog isn't acceptable - just common.

It doesn't matter what you call it at home, you're doing your DS a disservice if you don't teach him to use polite words outside of the home. He should have said toilet, bathroom, or lavatory. Detention is a little harsh though.

Mellower · 02/10/2012 20:38

BUT I am from Scoatland where they/we awe speak slang like "ah ken hen" um.. who is ken? I know hen is a bird? so are we really saying

Yes I know bird? Confused

NellyJob · 02/10/2012 20:39

He should have said 'shit'ouse' or 'shitter'

Sparklingbrook · 02/10/2012 20:42

Shocking

Mellower · 02/10/2012 20:42

Umm okay just read back, so what do we call the place we go extract the urine from the body?

I thought a toilet was a toilet. Has into turned into another word I do not know. Confused

I'm just away to the bathroom to the (what?)

NellyJob · 02/10/2012 20:42

in my mum's house we were never sure what to call it.....seemed everything was wrong - she said you didn't need to call it anything. Bog is useful though.
