to ask how you feel about Scottish Independence?

Particularly looking for opinions from South of the Border, but all opinions welcome. My FB is awash with Independence fever after the rally in Edinburgh yesterday. As a Scotwoman I am always interested to hear the views of the English and get that perspective. I'll not disclose whether I'm pro or anti as I suppose it's not relevant here, also not looking for a bunfight! Care to share?

And if you want a quick lesson in why some English would prefer Scotland to go, I direct you to Charlie's post, and people say the English are arrogant!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/09/2012 10:44

It is just giving factual information, whether or not you feel it shows you in a good light doesn't mean it's an "arrogant" post.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 24/09/2012 10:45

I think it is more like londonone describes in her post at 10.35 Peanut.

londonone · 24/09/2012 10:48

Well many of those "facts" are in fact contentious and there are links up thread to articles etc that reach different conclusions. So excuse me for being sceptical about "facts" declared by one side of a campaign. It's a bit like asking the Israelis or Palestinian government for some "facts" about the west bank, if ear their "facts"may be slightly different!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/09/2012 10:50

well then surely you can easily post refuting evidence?

londonone · 24/09/2012 10:51

I don't care enough to do so

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/09/2012 10:52

well then the "facts" will stand Wink

Incidentally I am actually on the fence re evidence, I just don't like the attitude that the posters who upset Peanut show.

(not saying you are one of these posters by any means Londonone) :)

Lovelygoldboots · 24/09/2012 10:53

Christ Almighty, Londonone, disagreeing is one thing. Using the West Bank as an analogy for Scottish independence really is an emotive step too far I think.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/09/2012 10:54

London I am very interested in your view, and open to changing my mind :)

Could you say exactly which of Charlies figures are wrong/misleading with evidence to back that up?

Charlie1972 · 24/09/2012 10:54

I've not gone head first, head long into the real arguments which are infinitely debatable.I left that right out of my post. All it contained was mostly just Yes No answers and how the referendum will work and some cold, boring stats.

Nothing is 'contentious' to Government treasury figures though??

Narked · 24/09/2012 10:56

I'm sure they're all spot on. Go independence! Grin

londonone · 24/09/2012 10:56

Yes I hope no one was thinking i wad comparing the two. It was the first debate that sprang to mind where the two sides both offer "facts" that are in fact contentious. Sorry wasnt suggesting the debate was comparable

Narked · 24/09/2012 10:57

Pstt! How many people are employed looking sfter those pesky nukes? How much is generated by their presence?

Charlie1972 · 24/09/2012 10:58

In the 'struggle' to cope, I'd be more concerned about the England/Wales/NI union post-2014.

With a shaky credit rating at the moment, and with the enormous assets of the oil and gas fields gone, the 'remaining UK' might find life a little tougher. However, having the Scots using the Pound might help bolster things considerably. Its a Win-Win.

londonone · 24/09/2012 11:00

Like I said, why do you think I want to convince you either way. I don't care what Scotland does, however I maintain that someone working for one side will not provide unbiased information. Look at the Stephanie Flanders link up thread if you want an alternative viewpoint.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/09/2012 11:01

But you SHOULD care, because it WOULD have implications for you, whether good or bad

QuickLookBusy · 24/09/2012 11:03

I'm English but spent my teenage and uni years in Scotland. Ten years altogether from 1977.

I'm just pleased they are having this vote because Independence has been talked about for such a long time. They should have this chance to once and for all vote and then either get on with Independence or get on with being part of the UK.

londonone · 24/09/2012 11:05

Well your concern is touching Charlie but once again you seem to overestimate how much we care.

Charlie1972 · 24/09/2012 11:06

The continued paradox I always found to be a head scratcher was if that the Scots are painted as 'Subsidy Junkies' by successive London Governments, why argue or care about them leaving?

Its a bit like having a family member lodging at your house for years, asking you every week for food, money, travel, washing etc, and them then one day them turning around to you saying "Actually, I'd like to go now and go my own way".

If they are such a burden, wouldn't it be 'good riddance' to use the same analogy? Why hold them back from so called 'ruination' ?

Never did understand that logic....

Narked · 24/09/2012 11:09

I hope you get independence. Full independence.

Narked · 24/09/2012 11:11

All the planned cut backs in the armed forces wil be a lot easier if we can just get rid of all the Scottish bases.

honeytea · 24/09/2012 11:11

Charlie I have a question for you, if you have time to answered it.

What about Scottish people's nationality? Will people born in Scotland automatically become Scottish? Will people born in Scotland have the option to stay British? What about the people who live in Scotland but were born in England/whales/n- Ireland, will they have to apply for residency in the same way you'd have to apply for residency if you moved to a foreign country?

I'm just curious, I was born in Scotland to English/Irish parents but I now live in Sweden, my brother was born in England to the same parents but now lives in Scotland.

I know it's a personal query.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/09/2012 11:11

Narked..why so vitriolic?

Are you labouring under the misapprehension that you subsidise us, perchance?

Narked · 24/09/2012 11:12

And our average life expectancy will go up overnight Wink

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/09/2012 11:13

ooh nasty

Do you grin and rub your hands every time a Scots person dies?
