to ask how you feel about Scottish Independence?

Particularly looking for opinions from South of the Border, but all opinions welcome. My FB is awash with Independence fever after the rally in Edinburgh yesterday. As a Scotwoman I am always interested to hear the views of the English and get that perspective. I'll not disclose whether I'm pro or anti as I suppose it's not relevant here, also not looking for a bunfight! Care to share?

English here, I think that it is good for those in scotland if they want it.
and as long as we are totally separate and england doesn't still have a say, or pay anything. good luck to them

JeezyOrangePips · 23/09/2012 12:03

Scottish in Scotland and against independence.

I wouldn't trust alex salmond et al with running my shop, never mind running the country.

Viviennemary · 23/09/2012 12:04

I agree with Independence for Scotland. But it won't happen.

RubyStolenBootyGates · 23/09/2012 12:05

Off you go then! But don't expect the English to do your laundry or send you rent cheques.
I hope that the Scottish calculations are correct and that they can thrive on their own.

But as part of the EU they'll still be part of a larger whole no? And there is pushing for a Federated European State, so we'll all be part of that union whether we want to be or not.

peanutMD · 23/09/2012 12:09

I'm Scottish and have always lived in Scotland.

I will be voting against independance because I think that we are not a financially viable country outwith the UK (nor do I believe any others to be).

I can only assume we will lose our military and nhs privelages that come as part of a union and that scares the crap out of me, how can we rebuild these things when the finance world is in the state it is now?

It worries nee that a lot of people will be voting purely to seperate themselves from the English because of bigotry spanning hundreds of years and nit because they know or believe it is right to do so.

Prarie can I just state the basing is tricks but it goes both ways, I live in an area where English RAF is prevelant and have had abuse for being Scottish more than once.

Sorry basing of tricks, should've been bashing of English...

I swear my phone needs learning support!

Figgygal · 23/09/2012 12:12

I'm Scottish but lived last 10 years in England if had right to vote in the ref I would be voting no to independence I think it's running before we can walk see no problem with devolution max but even then I think we are doing fine at the moment with the level of devolution already in place.

SuoceraBlues · 23/09/2012 12:13

English, living in Italy, but did once get posted to Scotland. When I was four.

Think it's up to the Scottish. Not fussed either way.

But don't want to see anybody forced put of their adotped home in either direction under new immigration laws that didn't apply when they left/moved up there.

peanutMD · 23/09/2012 12:15

Ruby what a childish post in answer to a serious discussion.

Bunbaker · 23/09/2012 12:15

I'm English and couldn't care less. What is daft though is that some years ago some people were campaigning for an independent Yorkshire - now that is daft.

TidyGOLDDancer · 23/09/2012 12:27

I'm English and don't personally care either way.

I do think it's a very poorly thought out plan based purely on emotions though, and isn't at all in the best interests of the people who will be majorly affected. I have yet to hear an argument for the split that is based on sensible foundations, rather than a patriotic rallying cry.

MsFaithless · 23/09/2012 12:27

Broadly against it.

Amongst many other things the finances just don't add up, the cost alone seems prohibitive and what about the currency? To retain the pound sterling would potentially put the rest of the UK at risk (see the devaluation of the Euro when smaller economic states didn't have cohesive economic policy with the financial hard hitters) and would also be impossible if Scotland wanted to join the the EU.

Scotland would need to apply to join the EU as an independent state and as such would need to commit to the Euro. The question as to whether they would be pushed into the Schengen agreement opens up a whole host of border issues although I do think this is unlikely.

Ultimately I do think we're stronger as a union and Scotland do very well out of having their own parliament and I'd be happy to see those powers strengthened.

Devo max seems like something more worthwhile exploring perhaps?

English living in Scotland btw

moonieponds · 23/09/2012 12:29

Scot living in Scotland.

I'm very undecided plus more than a little disappointed in the way things are going here politically despite supporting the Nats all my voting life.
I don't think we are ready yet and agree with the poster who said we are running before walking.

I'm confused by the whole devo max thing as well. Does it mean a completely independent state ie keep the oil revenue, hoik the royals out, borders up or what? Confused

Mrsjay · 23/09/2012 12:34

Im scottish we have had a referendum before YEARS ago and it was a NO I don't think id want it tbh I quite like being part of the UK but love my country (goes all braveheart Grin ) Id probably vote no although this is a fab country to live in ,

GothAnneGeddes · 23/09/2012 12:34

I think that the assumption that Scotland will automatically get EU entry is very flawed and that the independence movement is based on emotion rather then facts. Plus, I despise nationalism.

English, living in England.

Mrsjay · 23/09/2012 12:35

I'm confused by the whole devo max thing as well. Does it mean a completely independent state ie keep the oil revenue, hoik the royals out, borders up or what

YES SNP want all that but I think we would still be part of the comonwealth and keep the queen as head of state ( I think)

KatieScarlett2833 · 23/09/2012 12:37

Scottish, living in Scotland, will vote yes at the referendum.

As will all my family.

OptimisticPessimist · 23/09/2012 12:37

Devo max, as I understand it, means Scotland keeps all their own tax income and does all their own spending, but pays a set amount to Westminster to cover defence and foreign affairs. I'm not sure what would happen to the oil revenue in that scenario.

MsFaithless · 23/09/2012 12:38

moonie everyone's confused by the whole devo max thing Confused

Isn't it essentially devolution of all powers except foreign affairs and defence? Think that would mean you're still stuck with the royals though - I can't see then giving up Balmoral without a fight Wink

BeeBawBabbity · 23/09/2012 12:38

Scottish living in Wales.

Against independence, I think a lot of people in Scotland will be making an emotional decision rather than a logical one.

Also might give the Welsh ideas.

OptimisticPessimist · 23/09/2012 12:38

And even if we become independent Alex Salmond has said we will keep the Queen as head of state.

Prarieflower · 23/09/2012 12:39

Peanut I think we may have lived in the same place.SmileI went to a Scottish school as an English RAF child. The anti/English bigotry(even though I was born there, actually had a Scottish grandad and my dad was just doing a job that benefited us all) was daily but I still made nice Scottish friends(after developing a very thick skin).Young airman got beaten up by locals and there was an area you couldn't walk through alone if English(this was many years ago though).

What I hate now is the anti English stuff/pro we're Scottish etc you read in the media then the complaints when something good happens if the word "British" doesn't get used. It's confusing.

Ideally I'd like the Scots to choose asap but think actually the world economy as it is doesn't make this a sensible discussion to be having now.I wouldn't trust AS to do the right thing for Scotland either if I was Scottish-but I'm not.Smile

Mrsjay · 23/09/2012 12:41

And even if we become independent Alex Salmond has said we will keep the Queen as head of state.

Oh did he oh well, I think Im happy with the devolution that we havem

Prarieflower · 23/09/2012 12:41

See I think Scotland should pay for their own defense and have their own head of state instead of using ours for tourism purposes. How can you have the Queen as head of state and not believe in the National Anthem?HmmKind of hypocritical methinks.
