to ask how you feel about Scottish Independence?

Particularly looking for opinions from South of the Border, but all opinions welcome. My FB is awash with Independence fever after the rally in Edinburgh yesterday. As a Scotwoman I am always interested to hear the views of the English and get that perspective. I'll not disclose whether I'm pro or anti as I suppose it's not relevant here, also not looking for a bunfight! Care to share?

I think that's nonsense Pierre -my Glaswegian work colleagues are just as likely to arrested for pisdibg in the street in Magaluf as my former English colleagues.

If you are talking football -.well that is different.

londonone · 23/09/2012 17:18

I think you might be right prairie. Pierre perhaps all these people expressed this to you because you are Scottish! Much like you might joke with a new zealander about the Aussies. As I said m experience is that most foreigners think of Scotland as part of England!

PierreBourdieu · 23/09/2012 17:19

What's pissing in Magaluf got to do with ANYTHING?

I have also travelled a lot. I find that the English are usually welcome everywhere. In fact, the only time I have revived any abuse abroad for being English was this summer, in Portugal, from a table full of pissed up Welshmen. Go figure!

SuoceraBlues · 23/09/2012 17:19

I have lived half my life (and damn near all my adult life) outside of England. Knee deep in foreigners, all the time (well actually, to be accurate, I am the foreigner).

Where Scotland and Wales come up it is more a case of explaining they are countries in their own right and not bits of England, rather than fending off attacks while people yell "why can't you be more Scottish?" at me.

PierreBourdieu · 23/09/2012 17:20

'Most foreigners'? I'm about 100% certain that most of Canada, USA and Australia understand full well that Scotland is not England.

Hmmm, I do believe there is a big dollop of bullshit in what you're saying Pierre. I'll quote you so as to be helpful.

why is it that so many foreigners seem to actively dislike the English whilst embracing the Scots. And don't tell me this is not fact, we all know it is!

Where in that statement did you say this was your personal experience as a 'very well travelled' person? You are stating it as fact and going even further than that to forbid people from disagreeing with you ' And don't tell me this is not fact, we all know it is!.'

Poor show Pierre. Must try harder.

londonone · 23/09/2012 17:23

Hahaha, I think you don't have a clue about those countries if you think that. In my experience most people from those countries tend to refer to Britain and the British if they give it any thought at all. And all those countries I have found to be exceptionally welcoming to "the British" whichever area we come from.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/09/2012 17:24

I also think a lot of foreigners think Scotland is in england, sorry Pierre :)

recall · 23/09/2012 17:25

If it stops the Scottish moaning I'm for independence.

ProcessYellowC · 23/09/2012 17:25

Scot living in England, brought up strongly independence but would now truly define myself as british.

I read a fairly convincing article that people like myself could end up stateless.

And to buy into a big cliche that is so true for me - as a tight highlander I cannot really see how the £££s involved in separation would really be worth it for anyone.

So much as I feel like I am betraying my parents - I am against.

SuoceraBlues · 23/09/2012 17:27

I can't attest for the beliefs of most Americans, but an awful lot of those I have worked with have had no idea that Scotland and Wales were actually countries and not "states" of England and/or Britian.

They were all graduates as well. Hopefully not in geography Grin

GoldandOrangeAnnunziata · 23/09/2012 17:28

Scottish, and anti, completely against. Salmond was booed at the Glasgow Olympians celebration, which I take it as a sign that Glasgow is against him.

Prarieflower · 23/09/2012 17:31

Pierre errr no they don't.

The vast maj or Americans don't even have a passport and have little knowledge of foreign policy let alone European history.I have travelled in all of those countries you mention and we have family/friends in all.Maybe I'm just lovely but I've always had people falling over themselves being nice, helping us,asking me how near to London I liveGrin, how they love the Brits(I assume that includes the English),my accent,my manners etc, etc.Dp's aunt was a GI bride,he has US cousins, his sister worked in the US for years,I have Canadian family.

In France we actually had somebody pay for our petrol on an unmanned station on her credit card when we were stranded saying you can always trust the English. In Paris we were escorted to the Arch De Triomph when lost by a man saying how he loved the English. We've had oaps thanking us for our help in the 2nd ww in France and Greece.....

I've never had a negative experience,ever!

peanutMD · 23/09/2012 17:32

I cannot believe the casual racism being shown on this thread!

londonone · 23/09/2012 17:33

By who peanut?

GothAnneGeddes · 23/09/2012 17:34

Hahaha! USians know that Scotland's not England! Don't make me laugh!

Also, the US, Aus and Canada are not most foreigners.

PennyDead · 23/09/2012 17:35

Hmm, this thread has imploded on itself.

roughtyping · 23/09/2012 17:37

Peanut - agreed.

gregorisnotmyname · 23/09/2012 17:38

Having a pedant moment so have to say peanut that Scottish is not a race, it's a nationality, so therefore anyone saying something anti-Scot would in fact be xenophobic rather than racist.

Aaaanyway, I don't mind either way if Scotland becomes independent as it's entirely their choice. However, if I was Scottish I'd vote against.

peanutMD · 23/09/2012 17:38

there are too many to mention London!

Towards both English and Scottish.

People saying they want rid of the Scots and see how 'they'cope to shut them up and others presuming that the English are all arrogant hooligans.

really makes me rethink the people I speak to on here :(

peanutMD · 23/09/2012 17:39

Thank you for that Grigor I will take note next time I an offended to ensure that my language is correct...

BoneyBackJefferson · 23/09/2012 17:40

OldLadyKnowsNothing ItsAllGoingToBeFine

That would mean that several on this thread who have said that their DP is Scot but lives in England and is voting for independence are wrong as they are on the wrong register.

LadyBeagleEyes · 23/09/2012 17:40

These Scottish Independence threads always end up badly.
It's impossible to have a sensible debate.

peanutMD · 23/09/2012 17:40

Gregori sorry just looked at that quickly then rechecked.
