to ask how you feel about Scottish Independence?

Particularly looking for opinions from South of the Border, but all opinions welcome. My FB is awash with Independence fever after the rally in Edinburgh yesterday. As a Scotwoman I am always interested to hear the views of the English and get that perspective. I'll not disclose whether I'm pro or anti as I suppose it's not relevant here, also not looking for a bunfight! Care to share?

Just sayin'. I think you have a valid point though.

londonone · 23/09/2012 17:42

I think you may be over thinking it somewhat. As an English person for the purposes of this thread, I haven't found anything to be offended about. Similarly I would hope that most Scottish posters would be ale to see any offensive posts for what they are, irrelevant and ignorant.

PennyDead · 23/09/2012 17:42

I hate the idea that being pro indy equates to being anti English. It's detrimental to the cause. Likewise when English talk about 'getting rid', it amplifies the idea of the Scots as underdogs. We are simply a nation of people seeking self determination, by us, for us. It would be lovely to do it with the blessing of the other parts of the union. I love the poster who used the marriage analogy. Let's make this an amicable split where everyone is happy and free!

londonone · 23/09/2012 17:44

But what about the children penny Wink won't somebody think of the children!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/09/2012 17:44

ObeyBack, yes. If you are not on the electoral roll in Scotland when the referendum takes place, you do not have a vote, regardless of where you, your parents etc was/were born.

You can have an opinion, of course, just no say.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/09/2012 17:45

BoneyBack, sorry.

squoosh · 23/09/2012 17:46

I love voting, I vote in local elections, general elections, any box that looks for a tick, I'm there. However I'm 92.7% sure that I won't vote in the Independence referendum as I'm not Scottish and have no particularly strong feelings either way. I think 60% of people will make a pragmatic decision and 40% will make an ideological decision.

I do find it quite interesting but can see the failings in both campaigns. The pro Indy's need to dissociate themselves from petty anti English feeling and the pro Union lot need to move away from a tone that sometimes verge on patronising.

BoneyBackJefferson · 23/09/2012 17:46

I'm Pro Indy, I didn't like the second film but the rest have been ok.
young Indy was just silly tho.

PennyDead · 23/09/2012 17:47

Children of happy divorces fair far better than those of angry bitter 'stay together for the kids' types Wink #pedantic

honeytea · 23/09/2012 17:48

Personally I wouldn't like scottish independence, but only because I would be worried about the faff of getting a scottish passport. I was born in Scotland but I am English I only lived in Scotland till I was 1. Now I live in Sweden and it is a faff getting a UK passport I can't imagine how much of a faff it would be to get a scottish passport.

I guess I would have to apply for UK nationality.. If I was counted as Scottish my baby would be born Scottish (a baby is born with the mothers nationality in Sweden.)

PennyDead · 23/09/2012 17:49

I was at the rally yesterday. 10,000 pro Indy supporters and I never once heard any anti English sentiment. Bigoted behaviour like that is not tolerated by the Yes Scotland campaign, it specifically condemns it.

Prarieflower · 23/09/2012 17:49

But Penny I don't think the vast maj care so a lack of blessing (if there was one which I haven't seen quite the reverse)would be down to apathy or lack of interest.

I think a split would be fantastic for the English,we could finally be allowed to be proud of being English and I think it would draw all of us English together, perhaps even make us stronger.

I wonder if we might benefit financially in the long run too.

Bring it on!!!!

peanutMD · 23/09/2012 17:50

maybe my pregnancy hormones are in hyper mode today but I just think its a piss poor show when grown up's can't have a discussion without it turning into a name calling match about stereotypes and generalisations.

squoosh · 23/09/2012 17:51

Hmm, well I suppose now they've silenced Joan McAlpine the anti English sentiment has been turned down a notch.

PennyDead · 23/09/2012 17:51

So, honeytea you would deny a nation the opportunity for self determination for itself and its future generations because it would inconvenience you over a passport?! Give me fucking strength Hmm

VivaLeBeaver · 23/09/2012 17:52

I'm English, live in England.

I think that financially it would be a bad decision for Scotland. However if they choose to do it then I suppose that makes it good for England. More money for us if England aren't having to help support their nhs, education, military, etc.

I'm not really bothered if they choose to go it alone as long as we don't prop them up.

I wouldn't be too sure they'd get eu membership. I wouldn't be surprised if the eu are tightening membership after the concerns about Greece, Portugal, etc been financially viable.

honeytea · 23/09/2012 17:56

So, honeytea you would deny a nation the opportunity for self determination for itself and its future generations because it would inconvenience you over a passport?! Give me fucking strength

Yep, do you realise how hard it is to renew a passport in a different country? I don't imagine the it will be high on the Scottish agenda to open up an embasy in Stockholm in the 1st few years of independance.

I am Scottish in as much as I was born in Scotland, but I am much happier with being british because I am English/Irish and born in Scotland, so many people are a mix I can't see the problem with being british.

YokoUhOh · 23/09/2012 17:57

I will leave the UK (English with Scottish mum) if Scotland becomes independent as it means England will have a Tory government for evermore. This is all part of Cameron's grand plan to repeal the Act of Union.

SuoceraBlues · 23/09/2012 17:57

But Scotland already came into the EU as a member of Britian, so if they became independent from Britian, why would that status be stripped from them ?

Is it a legal thing, ie you can't join under a union and then leave the union but keep your membership card ?

SuoceraBlues · 23/09/2012 17:59

honeytea

But love, all our renewals have to go through Paris now anyway.

Which is very pissy offy.

Not sure what we have a consolate in Milan for at this point.

iismum · 23/09/2012 17:59

I find it incredibly patronising and annoying when English people (inc at least a couple on this thead) say things like 'I'm in favour of Scottish independence because at least it would stop all the whining'. Addressing issues such as the right to self-determination and the pros and cons of political alliances are rational, grown-up, appropriate topics. Dismissing them as whining is fatuous and stupid.

I also think the anti-English thing is also a red herring. For a few independence supporters (notably Sean Connery) this is really what it is about, but for the majority of pro-indys it's really not. There is no anti-English rhetoric in the debate and very little interest in it. But a lot of English people seem to whip themselves up into a frenzy of indignation about this myth.

GothAnneGeddes · 23/09/2012 18:00

Plus France + Spain would not be happy about breakaway nations getting EU membership in case it encouraged independence movements within their countries.

I think the pro campaign is built on hopes and assumptions rather then concrete facts.

PennyDead · 23/09/2012 18:00

The Scottish vote has no influence on who gets in to Westminster yokouhoh, so sorry, you're wrong if you think hanging on to us can save you from the evil Tories, I'm afraid that is a COMPLETELY English fuck up decision.

squoosh · 23/09/2012 18:01

Myth?

PennyDead · 23/09/2012 18:02

It is a myth that the 'Yes' campaign is in any way about 'hating the English' is what she means.
